  1. Dempster just about had a legit rule-book double. Just missed the basket on the bounce.
  2. Replay shows he was out. That's a harsh WP. And it doesn't matter, 2-run homer.
  3. Reed Johnson is very good at making plays at the edge of his range.
  4. Not really. They weren't rainbows, but they weren't line shots either. The last out was almost a hit, but only because it was blooped.
  5. I think maybe the Cubs are overdoing the "let's try to go the other way" thing.
  6. I get what you are saying about Pie, but I still don't want this trade. I'm a big believer in the fungibility of decent players. There's never a good reason to trade much of value for a merely decent player. If your GM is of any caliber at all, you should be able to find one most of the time. Pie isn't an elite prospect, but he's a very good one, and quite probably our only chance to trade for anything really worth trading for at the deadline.
  7. That '84 club was really, really good; despite what happened in San Diego. I won't argue with you in hopes that you are right. I definitely think we are better than the '84 team. They had the Pythagorean wins of a 91-win team, which is good but nothing special. About the only part of that team I'd take over this year's is back 3/5ths of the rotation. I like our offense, and I like our bullpen.
  8. Pass, pass, pass, pass. Pie is either our immediate answer in CF or he's our best trading chit for a legit impact player. DeJesus is decent, but that's just not enough straight up. Then we lose a little more value in the Cedeno/German swap. I can't imagine the pitching prospect being anyone good enough to make the difference. It's an idea I'd float if I were the Royals GM, but if I'm Hendry I'd say "for a package of decent players, you can get decent prospects. If you want a great prospect, offer a great player."
  9. I'd like to here the first 322 reasons then. Most of them have to do with the various varieties of defensive plays the defender should make but doesn't that aren't charged as errors, and the various varieties of poorly hit balls that turn into hits.
  10. Cubs are 34-21, the best record in baseball. Cubs are on pace for 100-62. Cubs need to go 56-51 (.523 pace) to get to 90 wins. Cubs are 3 games clear of a playoff spot. Cubs pythagorean record is even better than their actual record. Cubs need to go just 47-60 to finish at .500. There are three stats Baseball Prospectus identified that indicate a good chance of postseason success. They are: Defensive efficiency: The Cubs are second in the NL and 5th in the majors (and once we get Pie up where he belongs in the CF spot, it'll be even better). WRXL of your best reliever: Marmol came in second in baseball behind Brad Lidge, but should pass him with his performance today. K-rate of your total pitching staff: Cubs are 4th in the NL in strikeouts going into today. This team is the best in the NL and built to win in the playoffs. This is the best Cubs team any of us have ever seen.
  11. Aaron Cook makes us nervous. Lilly is horrible, we need a No. 2 starter at the deadline. Oh, cute, fake rally. Hey, this is getting cool. If Edmonds comes through, I might not hate him. OMG!!!!! WOW!!!!! Marmol makes Pedro Martinez in his prime look like Ryan O'Malley. We should leave Marmol for the ninth. If it's Wood, we'll be okay if he doesn't put the leadoff man on. Oh crud. Whew. Cubs win!
  12. He doesn't have to be your favorite, but what does he have to do for you to feel safe with him? His numbers are downright amazing. All of them. From HR's allowed to K:BB ratio, to K/9, to OPS against, to high leverage OPS, to RISP 2 outs, to close and late OPS against, to his overall control to his ERA +. What do you need from him? He's been way better than anyone expected if you look at his metics, pretty much any and all of them. He needs to be Marmol.
  13. My new all-time favorite fangraph: http://www.fangraphs.com/lgraphs/280530116_Rockies_Cubs_78069501_lbig.png
  14. Wow. I skipped straight past laughing to tears on that one.
  15. I love how they turned it just in case the ump screwed up the catch call.
  16. Wood relying heavily on his slider, hoping they swing at it. They aren't.
  17. Hopefully he does the smart thing and leaves Marmol in there after that amazing 8th inning he threw. Depends on how you define smart. Pitching him 2 innings after an inning yesterday would get the majority of people up in arms on NSBB. Doesn't everyone complain about how overused he is on a constant basis. Lose-Lose for Lou. Not at all. We complain about overuse when he's used in mop-up situations, which is idiotic.
  18. Radio just said Wood for the ninth. That makes me very, very nervous. I just hope he holds them to one and we can walk off.
