  1. Fangraphs UZR has Uribe as an above-average defensive middle infielder, and his projections for 2009 are generally around a .700 OPS (albeit heavy on the SLG). If we didn't already have more than enough middle infielders, we could do worse for the position.
  2. acknowledging that fact, then deciding that the best solution is to give up on what little bit is left seems like a bad deal to me. But we're giving them up for one of the best pitchers in baseball. And he's only 27 to boot. He's bringing with him elbow problems and a monstrous contract.
  3. You missed a step titled "Have MLB change rules so that defense does not have to cleanly field batted balls to have them recorded as outs."

  5. We're committing possibly up to 5/$81. That's the biggest thing we're giving up.
  6. I think the Cubs are pretty much planning on both of those things.
  7. I'm putting McGwire, Clemens and Bonds in the Hall too if I had a chance. But if McGwire has trouble cracking 25%, there's no way Sosa gets in. I'd bet Sosa is looked upon more favorably than McGwire. Idiots view McGwire as a one dimensional HR or nothing hitter. But not 50% of the vote better.

  9. No one who played for any length of time between 1988 and 2005 is above suspicion, so that's not saying much. I was kind of hoping to make a broad enough statement that no one would find room to quibble :) Not everyone who played from '88-'05 was a known cheater who fit the statistical profile of a PED-user, so Sosa gets to be on a special level of "not above suspicion."
  10. Well, yes, but I was using it as part of the circumstantial evidence that Sosa used PEDs There was never any direct evidence that Sosa used PEDs. But he was a guy willing to used cork bats, played during an era where many (if not most) of the players of his caliber were using, and had a career that fit the profile of a user. It's certainly not enough for a court of law, but it's enough to keep him above suspicion in the court of public opinion.
  11. This warrants repeating endlessly.
  12. Innocent until proven guilty. Just ask Rogers Clemens and Rod Blagojevich. Except no one has ever made a legitimate case against Sosa except "He had muscles and hit a lot of homers and spoke Spanish in front of Congressmen!" And he's a caught cheater in an era where it was the most common form of cheating.
  13. I'll expect him not to come within .250 points of last season's OPS.
  14. Ones about wanting it, one's about doing it the right way. Think Daniel Snyder for a guy who wants to win but is doing it wrong.
  15. North Dakota is the Dakota that wishes it were Canadian.
  16. John Canning was the favorite from day 1, but that was many days ago. Generic rich white guy names sound the same to me.
  17. Wasn't he more or less the favorite from day one, or am I not remembering right?
  18. http://www.bizofbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2893:tribune-selects-finalist-in-chicago-cubs-sale&catid=70:mlb-club-sales&Itemid=157 It appears the name has been chosen, they don't want to let it out until it's been blindly approved by the bankruptcy committee.
  19. Do the chefs have a coaching staff yet? No idea who the Chefs are, but the Chiefs have yet to officially terminate Herm Edwards. That said, the rumors are flying that he'll go either this year or next. I love that link only because it's related links were Terry Tate: Office Linebacker.
  20. I'm fairly certain that the earliest ever form of communication was a man pointing at his junk, and now we've come full circle. It's beautiful in a way.
  21. I want Oher and the Cubs to get Nick Swisher and then be bought by Saloman Brothers.
  22. There are four teams in this division that would wish they had that rotation, and the fifth should want it but wouldn't.
  23. My buddy who writes for this site: http://www.bracketography.com/ Had just turned in a big column about how overrated Northwestern is late yesterday afternoon.
  24. Winn-Dixie is more real than North Dakota. Fact. True. North Dakota is only real to the pure of heart and strong of mind (who also happen to own thermal undergarments).
