  1. If the Marlins do shop Cabrera, I think it could work in the Cubs favor that Hendry has made trades with the Marlins in the past and that in the case of Dontrelle, our prospects produced for the Marlins.
  2. Supposedly Castro received some asurances that there would be no defections before agreeing to participate. I guess we'll have to wait and see how empty those assurances were.
  3. I got that book for Christmas, and only read a few chapters. Did it get any better after the first few? I found it to be pretty boring, from what I did read. I enjoyed it, but I'm an avid reader.
  4. GIS for "sweet Cubans" http://www.greatboyfriends.com/photos/member/267388.jpg
  5. Want to read "Mind Game: How the Boston Red Sox Got Smart, Won a World Series, and Created a New Blueprint for Winning"? I'd love to. Right now, I have The Book on the Book, Curveball, and Twice Around the Bases to catch up on. I have finished Liscence to Deal if anyone is interested.
  6. Ok...I really don't have the time needed to do this right, so I'm gonna have to drop off the committee. Sorry.
  7. If constructed properly with 11 pitchers, Pagan would be a nice addition to the bench.
  8. Judging a player by one game is never a good idea. I think Tex's career speaks for itself.
  9. The loss drops the Cubs to 4-3 on the spring.
  10. Is this one final yet? Do we have a score?
  11. Dopirak had to be added to the 40-man roster. All players on the 40 man are invited to ST. Patterson hasn't been in the system long enough to necessitate his being on the 40-man. He'll get called up from minor league camp to appear in some games, but he isn't training in major league camp.
  12. I'm almost certain Kevin Millar came up with that. Those announcers are idiots.
  13. Mabry has been charged with 2 errors. There was another ball to open the third inning that Mabry bobbled and was originally called an error, but later reversed and it was called a single. All of the Padres' runs should be unearned. Ouch. And to think we guaranteed his contract.
  14. Jones is continuing to do well this spring. I can only hope he puts up a season like his 2002-2003 seasons.
  15. It's curious to you that people seek to make money :?: In context, yes. When said people are journalists and choose not to publish their findings in the general news media, rather they choose to reveal their findings in a private publication. So I question their motives, which then leads to questioning the validity of the research. The repurcussions for inaccurate statements in a private publication are not nearly the same as if published in a reputable news publication. From what I've read about the authors, they are some of the best investigative journalists around. The fact that they chose a book rather than some other form of media to present their findings should be irrelevant. I'm sure they spent much time and resources to discover this information. I have no problem with them choosing the media form that could reimburse them with the most profits. I don't think it impacts their credibility at all.
  16. Link. I thought this was a good overview of the Cubs system. It could serve as a primer for those that aren't as familiar with the Cubs prospects.
  17. Morneau and Bay are the biggest names, I think.
  18. Cintron hit .273 with 19 doubles, 8HR, and 48 RBI and hit .304 with a league-leading 3HR as a pinch hitter. His lifetime avg. is .279. He plays 3 positions, is 5 years younger, and he's much cheaper. Now tell me again that "he's not necessarily a better player than Neifi". Some people carry this "players who can catch the ball" thing too far. Cintron career OPS+ is 85 Perez career OPS+ is 65 ain't no amount of glovework making up for that. Cintron may be a little better, but neither is good enough to care about.
  19. On a somewhat related topic, it appears that many of us buy and read baseball books. Would anyone be interested in starting a book exchange?
  20. Just like they were out of the running last year when they were ~15 out. Or the year before that. But those years, they had Clemens. This year, by June-July, they could be 20 games out without him.
  21. I think swapping Lee and Tex around is to give both players time in the field. I can't imagine Texas would be pleased if their first baseman lost 2-3 weeks of ST and didn't get any field time at first base. Under normal circumstances, I agree that Lee should be at first and Tex at DH, but it's not as if Tex is a horrible firstbaseman. He's above average defensively.
  22. The present-day commisioner doesn't wield nearly the power that the comissioner did in Landis's day. Landis never had to deal with a players' union.
  23. It will go on my summer reading list, but I already have three books ahead of it that I've yet to start reading.
