  1. Which site? GatewayRedbirds? And if so, where is there game thread located? Hah, it's on Gateway Redbirds. I just read that thread. I guess the real problem is that Tony La Russa made a move that, in the end, didn't work out. They're getting on Tony for not being able to predict the future. Actually, they should get on Tony. Statistically, a DP occurs a little over 10% of the time. Walking a hitter in order to set up a DP is almost always a bad move.
  2. Statistically, walking Cedeno to face Nevin isn't a high percentage move.
  3. Yes, I think Gonzalez could be high on Hendry's list. Hendry apparently was very impressed with him before hiring Baker. Secondly, Hendry has tried to model the Cubs after the Braves. Unfortunately for Cub fans, Hendry doesn't really understand how the Braves have done what they've accomplished. Either way, hiring a lieutenant of Cox makes sense in that regard.
  4. Ok we've now gone over four days without anyone making a pick. This needs to pick up.
  5. Junior Seau has un-retired and signed with the Patriots. Link.
  6. Why is he your first choice? There are a number of reasons that I've liked Gonzalez. If the Cubs want to hire someone who isn't a retread, Gonzalez has earned his stripes. He's been a successful minor league manager and has learned under Cox in Atlanta. Personally, I think Atlanta has been the best run team over the last decade and a half, and hopefully Gonzalez brings some of that philosophy with him. Gonzalez isn't my first choice. That would be Dierker. It's not that I think Gonzalez is a bad choice and had he written a book like Dierker where I could see all his philosophies laid bare, I might prefer him to Dierker. Unless Dierker or Davey Johnson are brought in, I can't think of any re-tread that would be better than Gonzalez.
  7. Did Stone also predict the batter would strike out on a slider low and away?
  8. If this is the same Jesse Hoorelbeck who played college ball at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, he dated my friend Leslie for awhile.
  9. Well...for those hoping to get back to 500 by Sept 27....
  10. Well...the Cubs have responded to this thread in customary fashion.
  11. Gonzalez was my first choice for a long time, and while I'd prefer Dierker, Gonzalez is young enough that he could be a long-term solution to our managerial problem. I'd be all in favor of a Fredi Gonzalez hiring.
  12. I just can't fathom why the Cubs aren't showing interest in Dierker. Didn't his whooping our asses all those years while he was in Houston get any attention?
  13. This is what I'd do and I think it in no way represents what Hendry will do. I'd offer Pierre arbitration but make no attempt to sign him to a long term deal in hopes of getting a draft pick. I would trade one of Izturis or Cedeno, likely as part of a package deal. I'd attempt to sign Sheffield to a 1/9 contract and shift Jones to CF. I'd sign Schmidt if at all possible. I'd look at what Soriano's tag would be, then likely move on to another option at second base and hopefully get someone with the ability to lead-off. My line-up: 2b ? LF Murton 1b Lee RF Sheffield 3b Ramirez C Barrett CF Jones SS Izturis or Cedeno SP Zambrano SP Schmidt SP Prior SP 4-5: Marshall, Marmol, Hill, or Guzman I think the pitching could be good enough if both Sheff and Lee can remain healthy.
  14. I think a job that might be described as a "humper" might be a lot more fun than a "lumper."
  15. The SI college preview arrived in the mail today. Here are their preseason rankings: 1. Ohio State 2. Notre Dame 3. Texas 4. LSU 5. USC 6. West Virginia 7. Auburn 8. Cal 9. Florida 10. Michigan There are some surprises there. I was astonished to see LSU fourth and ahead of Auburn.
  16. Funny you should ask..... I'm sitting at a loading dock right now in Alsip, IL waiting to get loaded for beautiful Waxahachie, TX !! Believe it or not, I've been to Waxahatchie. So, what route are you taking there? Are you coming through Little Rock through Texarkana or going through Oklahoma?
  17. 3/$15m right fielder 3 good prospects + $5.75m + potentially many more millions of dollars $2.8m Do you seriously need this explained to you? What he said. The biggest beef with Jones and Pierre (for many people) is the amount paid and/or given up for them. You could have Patterson in CF giving you the same prediction (over the course of the season, so far) as Pierre and save money and still have the three pitchers given up in the Pierre trade. Thirded
  18. Go Reds!
  19. Thanks for taking the time to answer these for us, Jake! Good luck the rest of the season and hopefully we'll be seeing you with the big league club soon.
  20. When did we start calling a future Hall of Famer "that Biggio guy?" When this site decided we couldn't use the other obscene names I usually refer to him by.
  21. This is good news, but Glenn and Crayton are still out. I'm a bit worried, hopefully everything sorts themselves out eventually. I'm not as worried about Crayton as I am Glenn. I think Hurd can offer as much production as Crayton will.
