  1. And that's pretty ridiculous. This isn't little league or high school ball for that matter. Even the most defensively challenged major leaguer makes most of the plays. When the ball is put in play, more times than not, an out is recorded. The put it in play mantra is great in little league. I hate 12 year olds that strike out because with that age, 75% of the time when the ball is in play, something good does happen for the team at bat. Not so in the majors. I want production. Dunn makes fewer outs than most other options for LF. When he does make an out, it's often with the K. Big deal because he is still making fewer outs. Outs are the most valuable commodity in the game. The players who make fewer outs (OBP) and make the most of their contact (SLG) are the most valuable (OPS).
  2. Wins are about as pointless a measure of a pitcher's performance as any stat available.
  3. Dunn is very likely going to be at least a 100 point upgrade in OPS over Murton. Having Murton put up a 780-800 OPS might be more cost effective, but we'd be better off spending to get Dunn to consistently put up a 900+ OPS. I wouldn't say he would be at least a 100 plus upgrade necessarily. Dunn has put up a 900 or more 2 out of the last 4 years-one of the years he didn't do that was this year. He's 89 points better than Murton this year. Murton's numbers still have room to go up, while Dunn is more likely to consistently stay around the numbers he's put up the last 3-4 seasons or so. Dunn is 26, Murton is 24. Dunn makes 7.5 million dollars this year, Murton makes 337,000. Murton plays better defense than Dunn (although Dunn is a little better than some of the mistakes we see him make on defense). Also, trading for Dunn would require more than Murton-so we have to factor in how valuable the other players we'd have to trade them would be, or how valuable those pieces would be in another trade (some of the players mentioned could be used to get Andruw Jones or possibly Tejada for example) It still might be worth the gamble, but it's certainly not an open and shut case. Why would you expect a 24-year-old Murton to improve but not a 26-year-old Dunn?
  4. To get Dunn, Hendry should be willing to include any one of our minor leaguers. It doesn't matter if it is Paweleck, Gallagher, Veal, Pie or anyone else. It's going to take a package to get him. My guess is the Reds would want 1-2 major league players (Murton + Dempter or Murton + Marshall) or they would want a package of one major leaguer, one near ready prospect, and one high ceiling prospect (Dempster + Marmol + Veal). I doubt they would want a package built entirely around prospects.
  5. Andruw likely fits the needs of this team better, but Andruw is a 10/5 player, so that would complicate things a little more. I disagree. The cubs desperately need obp and left handed power. they can find someone else to play CF. Well, I'd prefer Dunn. I just like him as a player. The reason I said Jones fits a need better is that he would provide power and fill a vacancy in the line-up. While Dunn is a major improvement over Murton, I'd say Jones + Murton + Jones > Jones + Pierre + Dunn. Either would look nice, and Hendry shouldn't become fixated on just one, but pursue all options.
  6. There's a noticeable lack of interest in today's game thread.
  7. Andruw likely fits the needs of this team better, but Andruw is a 10/5 player, so that would complicate things a little more.
  8. I'm on record that I'd love to acquire Dunn. If the Reds want to move him, I'd be more than willing to accomodate them. I'd gladly do Murton + Dempster for Dunn if the Reds would, and I like Murton, but Dunn's production greatly eclipses Murton's. I'd love to trade Jones + Dempster for Dunn, but that leaves Murton without a position and the Cubs would still have to acquire a RF. My guess is Murton would be included in any deal. Murton + Marmol and a lower prospect may also be workable. It's possible the Reds wouldn't want Murton and would like Pie. I'd do a deal with Pie + Dempster as well, but in such a deal Murton would likely have to be shopped in another deal. Adding Dunn to the heart of the order with Lee, Ramirez, and Barrett would greatly improve the Cubs' run production.
  9. Add Alex Gordon and Billy Butler to the mix and the Royals have some very promising up and coming bats.
  10. My TV will stay on LSU-Auburn until its conclusion. Geaux Tigers!
  11. With that team, I'd probably watch the fewest Cubs games of any season since I was three.
  12. I'm no sure that developing arms to trade for bats is a bad idea, I just think that Hendry hasn't utilized that philosophy correctly. He seems to develop such an attachment to his young arms that he doesn't trade them and overvalues them at a time when a trade might be prudent. Then, at other times, he trades them for something that we don't need ala Pierre. He held on to Cruz for too long and Cruz's value was at an all-time low when he was traded. While Hill has no redeemed some of his value, there may have been a time when he could have been a package for a player that would have helped us a great deal. Did we keep Guzman too long? Also, it seems that anytime we deal a player for prospects, we are still trying to get arms back rather than position players. Getting players like Murton seems to be the exception rather than the norm. I'm sure I'm over-generalizing a bit here, but I'm not so sure the philosophy is as flawed as the implementation of that philosophy has been.
  13. Arroyo doesn't get to face Rusch, so maybe no homeruns for him this time.
  14. Based on cost, I would have chosed Kenny. I thought Pierre would be better than Lofton this year, but I'd have rather signed Lofton than spent three decent prospects for Pierre. I still would rather Lofton at the cost, but I don't see a need for either.
  15. I just don't get the point of fan protests. I enjoy baseball too much to get up and walk out of game. I doubt any of these protests mean as much as a half-empty stadium or lower ratings or fan apathy. While I'll always be a Cubs' fan, I have reached the point of fan apathy. I've watched a whole lot fewer games than usual and even stopped TiVoing the ones I couldn't see very early this summer.
  16. I don't think Shealy plays anywhere but first. In the AL, he can always get time at DH. There's never been much question whether he could hit.
  17. I hope Hendry doesn't look at Gonzo. I think Murton is more valuable than what Gonzalez would bring at this stage.
  18. Look for Texas to retool this season. The owner is not happy with that collection of players.
  19. I'd pass on Miller unless he signs for 1.5 million or less.
  20. I'm eagerly awaiting LSU-Auburn. I have a feeling it will go into OT.
  21. And they both could be true. I never said one meant the other wasn't true. :P
  22. is this because they both have red hair? Not really. I just think they are both similar players at the plate.
  23. I agree that it isn't for certain that Hendry's job is safe. But we also haven't heard much rumbling that he could be gone, and for that reason I don't think he's on the hot seat, but he should be.
