  1. Can Teixeira still play RF? How about Pie, Jones, and Marshall for Tex? (Ok, I'm dreaming...I know.)
  2. I think they are bound to accept the high bid or else reject all bids.
  3. Drew would be perfect for the Cubs. Furthermore, with Drew signed to a 4-5 year deal, the Cubs might look to trade Pie to upgrade secondbase, shortstop, or pitching.
  4. What's most worrisome is that from the time he filed until a few days ago, the word from almost every source was that a deal would get done. The beat writers to the collumnists all seemed to believe that it would go to the deadline, but that a deal was imminent. Now, as we have approached the deadline, everyone is silent on the subject. We're not getting optimistic proclamations from Hendry. No one is reporting the sides close to an agreement. In fact, just the opposite. It seems they have stopped talking. I'm having a bad feeling about this offseason. We should blow it up and get ready to rebuild with a bumper FA group after the 07 season. However, Hendry doesn't have that luxury.
  5. However, the Red Sox may have bid so high knowing they wouldn't give-in to the 3-year demand. It would be hard to accuse them of bad faith when they could say that this system gives them his rights for six years. Imagine if a first round draft pick wanted to be set free after three years? Would MLB say the team that drafted him acted in bad faith if they didn't give in? No. So, while bidding high and offering a ridiculously low contract might bring about scrutiny of MLB, bidding ridiculously high and then offering a moderate contract without the 3-year stipulation likely will not...despite how much Boras will protest it.
  6. They may pay it if Matsuzaka agrees to a low-ball contract. Many people were predicting a 5/50 deal for Matsuzaka with a 20 million posting fee. In essence, 5/70 or 14 million a season for him. The Red Sox may have bid 45 million, but only plan to offer him a 5/25 contract or a 5/30 contract. The total cost would roughly be the same. They may feel it's worth the risk. I have heard a few times Boras is going to want 3 years max on the contract. So a $45 million posting fee is more difficult to justify when the agent's position and starting point is known to be 3 years. Remember, whoever wins the bidding has Matsuzaka's rights for 6 years, regardless of the contract he signs. They could have a clause put in like the Yankees did with Matsui that after a 3-year deal, the team is contractually bound to non-tender him. Of course, the Red Sox could still resist those demands and allow him to go back to Japan. Furthermore, if Boras has said to be telling teams he wants a 3-year deal, that may have been why there were rumors of a low posting fee.

  8. I'm not a Bears or Giants fan, but did anyone hear Colin Cowherd's ridiculous comments today about the game? (Yes, I know I deserved to be slapped for even listening to his drivel.) He said if the Giants win , it's because they're a better team. If the Bears win, the Giants are still a better team, they just have a lot of injuries.
  9. I have a few things I'd like to interject. All of this supposition with no actual basis in anything but my imagination and taken with some of the info or rumors we have heard. 1. Why is the process taking so long? We heard a lot about tampering. Maybe a team did have an under the table agreement with a team that would allow them to bid say a figure of 25 or 30 million but not pay the whole amount. Seibu may have known what the figure was and were waiting to get that figure in order to accept in accordance with their under-the-table agreement. Suddenly, another team outbids that figure and Seibu knows it. Maybe they liked the other terms better than money and now are struggling with what to do. 2. Are the Red Sox serious? Maybe there is some concern the Red Sox aren't serious about signing him. Maybe there is concerns that the Red Sox plan to low-ball Matsuzaka with a contract, knowing he'll either take it or at worst, he won't be a Yankee.
  10. 125, 148, 158- Drew's OPS+ the last three years. 393, 412, 436- Drew's OBP the last three years. 498, 520, 569- Drew's SLG the last three years. He's the best of the available FA for the Cubs needs. He's a better hitter than Carlos Lee. He's better defensively than Soriano. He would not be out of position playing CF. He's far and away better than GMJ. Drew is a perfect fit for the Cubs needs this offseason. That's why the facination with Drew.
  11. The feel they owe him for not getting out of the way of all those pitches over the years.
  12. I still fear that a trade for Sheffield will supplant Murton in left. If I knew getting Sheff would move Jones to CF or that Jones would be moved and a better CF brought in (Drew), I'd be more for it.
  13. I'd rather deal Dempster than Wuertz. Make them take Novoa.
  14. Wow...Cedeno is hitting horribly.
  15. If Texas gets him, at least it's not the Yankees or Mets. And Texas is my favorite AL team. I'll still be pissed the Cubs didn't get him, though.
  16. I bet he gets closer to it than we think. The dearth of quality on this market will result in a lot of over-paid players. My guess is Padilla gets 3/27 or 4/35. That's not too far away from 10 million per season.
  17. The Fort-Worth Star Telegram indicates the Rangers bid was in the thirty million range. Link.
  18. I thought all along that Hicks would be a major player in this.
  19. Further added to this if Ramirez signs after tomorrow, he will count toward the total of Type A/B FA the Cubs can sign, further limiting the moves the Cubs could conceivably make this offseason. If Ramirez isn't signed by the end of the exclusive deadline, Hendry will have badly mangled this one. He isn't totally at fault, but it's happening on his watch.
  20. No buzz to that effect, and he's never asked to be posted. Matsuzaka, Iwamura and Igawa had all asked to be posted repeatedly leading up to this season.
  21. Looks like Mr. Maybeline will stay with the enemy. Link.
