  1. Drew prefers CF. I'd sign him to play that. If the Cubs still want Sheffield, a Murton/Drew/Sheffield OF isn't that bad.
  2. On the bright side, last year's early signing was Glendon Rusch to a 2/6 contract. This is certainly better than that.
  3. Doesn't sound like this deal will happen this weekend. Link.
  4. 125, 148, 158. That's Drew's OPS+ for the last three seasons. Get him signed Jim. Keep Ramirez. Hopefully, we'll win the bidding for Matsuzaka. Sign Craig Wilson to platoon with Jones in RF. Sign Ray Durham. 2007 Cubs. 2b Durham LF Murton 1b Lee CF Drew 3b Ramirez RF Jones C Barrett SS Izturis Rotation: Zambrano, Matsuzaka, Hill, Miller, Prior/Marshall/Marmol Bullpen: Dempster, Eyre, Howry, Aardsma, Wuetz, Ohman Bench: Wilson (1b/RF/LF), Pagan (OF), Theriot (2b/SS), Moore (1b/3b), Soto ©, Cedeno (SS/2b) That team would be much improved.
  5. The Rangers no longer use the red and white scheme. Blue is their primary color now.
  6. In this market? yes. There's lots of teams with money and few players worth spending it on. My guess is he'll get an extra year. I'd look at Drew signing a 4/50 contract.
  7. Of the big bats, Lee, Soriano, and Drew- Drew fits our needs better than any of them. We wouldn't be suplanted Murton as we would be with Lee and Drew wouldn't be moved to a new position as Soriano would have to do. Drew is a perfect fit.
  8. On initial glance, I'd rank them Matsuzaka, Schmidt, then Zito. It comes down to a close call between Matsuzaka and Schmidt. Matsuzaka is younger, but has been abused as far as IP goes. Also, signing Matsuzaka will not cost us draft picks. On the other hand, it is still questionable as to what Matsuzaka will do. Schmidt is a more proven commodity. Between the two, it's probably decided with a coin flip. I take either over Zito and the contract he'll command.
  9. Actually, I'm a sadist. I'm scouring the Internet looking for Matsuzaka wearing a Yankees hat.
  10. I still don't believe it. (And I'm not trying to mean, I just don't want to get my hopes up.)
  11. You have to pay him top ten money because someone else will. If every player was a FA every year, you could make that argument more easily. But that isn't the case. Right now, a lot of teams have money to spend and there aren't a lot of players out there worth that money. Guys are going to get overpaid. Ramirez will make the money. If the Cubs don't pay him someone will. Furthermore, if the Cubs let Ramirez walk, there isn't really a feasable way to make this team a contender for 2007. If that's ok with the Cubs, they should let him walk. Sometimes you have to overpay to get what you need.
  12. Not a bad move as Miller will be a good candidate for the back-end of the rotation. Now the rotation is Zambrano, Hill, Miller (if healthty), then two of Prior/Guzman/Marshall/Mateo/Marmol. One more is definitely needed. If that one more is Matsuzaka/Schmidt/Zito, we can probably focus the rest of the salary on the offense. If we have to go second tier, it might be best to bring in two more pitchers.
  13. According to this story, the bidding will close on Akinori Iwamura on Friday.
  14. I'm not sure I like the take-it-or-leave-it stance either, but it could be Hendry's only leverage. Right now, Ramirez is asking for more saying he can get it on the open market. If Hendry's offer is one that remains out there past Saturday, the Ramirez runs no risk in waiting until he can hear monetary offers from other teams. On the other hand, if Hendry claims that his offer leaves the table once the FA period begins, Ramirez runs the risk of leaving money on the table, especially if he really wants to remain in Chicago. It's a big game of chicken. Hendry is taking a huge risk playing it this way.
  15. I'd feel comfortable offering Ramirez a 6/93 deal with limited no-trade protection. I'd offer him full no trade proteaction in the first three years and then let him pick a list of six teams he cannot be traded to in the last three years.
  16. I read somewhere that MLB had admonished clubs not to discuss their bids.
  17. The Sun-Times article for today doesn't make it seem as if this will end soon. Link.
  18. I like the DB snake logo as well. I agree it should be on the hat. Maybe they will use it for the BP hat.
  19. Agreed. Basically, you would be paying 10 Million for a platoon player. That doesn't make much sense to me. 10 Million for a platoon player? I think the money can be spent on a SP. Murton doesn't need a platoon partner. He is going to have a great year in 07. And while there may be better ideas than signing Bonds, it's still a better idea than trading Barrett for Wells.
