Personally, I think Dunn would be ideal to put in the fourth spot between Lee and Ramirez. Unfortunately, it appears the Padres are in discussions for Dunn and the Reds want Linebrink. The Padres want Freel too. Link. Assuming the Reds want Linebrink, would they take Howry from the Cubs instead. Would the Reds bite on Howry + Jones + Mateo for Dunn?

I'd love to get Dunn, but we'd have to either play him ahead of Murton or play Murton in RF and Soriano in CF to fit him. I'm not opposed to getting him and letting Murton be the fourth OF. If the Cubs are set on trading Jones, maybe Krivsky likes Jones from his Minnesota days. How about Jones, Dempster, and Marshall for Dunn. I'd even be willing to kick in a Ryan Harvey or Dopirak to get it done.

Much about Padilla seems to center on his staying with the Rangers. He wants four years and the Rangers are offering three. If a compromise isn't reached there in the next few days, then I think Padilla's name will be mentioned a lot more.

Starting to look like somewhere in the bowels of a backroom in Orlando, Hendry got the final word that Schmidt either wasn't interested in Chicago, or only would be if the money was incredibly high, or wanted 5 years, or whatever. I agree, *sigh* I'm starting to believe this as well. If Seattle is willing to go 4/56 or something like that, it may mean Hendry would have to do better than 4/60 to get him to come to Chicago. My feeling is Hendry doesn't believe he can land Schmidt, so he decided not to try. Or Hendry is doing his best to keep his interest in Schmidt hidden and will come out and get him under the radar. I hope it is the latter, but greatly fear it is the former.

I'm quoting Jayson Stark again, because it pisses me off! Schmidt should be signed. The value of a Zambrano-Schmidt top of the rotation would allow us to use a combination of Marshall/Marmol/Mateo/Guzman at the bottom of the rotation.
