If the Nats would do Jones for Church, I'd take it. Jones likely has more perceived value, but Church is cheaper. Getting Church for Jones would free up the money to sign Lofton or someone else as well as get a useful player in Church.

It's a good signing. He's a decent option for the bench, has the ability to step in for a starter in the case of injury, and actually has some pop in his bat. He brings some additional value since our line-up is so heavily right-handed, having Ward as an option could neutralize teams from riding hard-throwing righties late in the game. If we could get a hitter who brings similar skills from the right side, I might actually like our bench this year.

Well, it's a shame we didn't get him. I felt he would've signed for about 4-6 million less. At this price, he would have been a gamble. I still would have liked to see him in the line-up. -

Legend has it that Kent was converted from a starter to the bullpen because the glory of him pitching 7-9 innings at a time was too much to behold. By moving him to the bullpen, his grace was more evenly dispersed.

I don't think this is the roster we head to spring training with. First of all, we still have too many arms for the bullpen. Someone is going to have to be moved or exposed to waivers. Secondly, we still need to answer the CF question, and third we have to decide what to do with Jacque Jones. Added to all of that, I wouldn't be surprised to see the bench and rotation augmented. Looking at the roster, I think these guys make the team as position players: C: Barrett, Blanco 1b: Lee, Ward 2b: DeRosa, Theriot 3b: Ramirez SS: Izturis OF: Soriano, Murton, Jones That's eleven guys, so there are likely three more bench spots if we have an 11-man pitching staff, two if we go with a 12-man staff. On the pitching side things look a little more convoluted. SP's: Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Prior, Miller. (Unless one of those opens on the DL, only Hill has options left.) Bullpen: Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Ohman, Cotts, Novoa, Wuertz, Wood. That's eight guys and I don't think any of those have options remaining. Novoa might, but I don't think so. At least one and maybe two of those will need to be moved. Added to this logjam will be a decision on Rusch who will likely be DL'ed as soon as that becomes possible. The Cubs are going to have problems rostering any more FA's if they don't make some moves soon. I'm convinced that some changes will be made shortly to resolve some of these issues. My guess is that a bullpen arm or two along with Jones will be traded before the offices close for Christmas.

Jason Hirsh. He was rated very highly by Sickels and BA before last season. He was roughed up a bit in his time in the majors last season, but went 13-2 with a 2.10 ERA at AAA Round Rock with a 1.06 WHIP. In 2005, he went 13-8 with a 2.87 ERA at AA. He'll be 25 years old in 2007. He's a top of the line prospect, and with a little patience is likely major league ready.

My guess is that Hirsch was a deal breaker. The Sox likely insisted on him and the Astros wouldn't budge.

I'd prefer Suppan to Marquis. I might even prefer Weaver (who I in no way want) to Marquis.

The Sox could be collecting prospects for any number of big acquisitions. They may be collecting the pieces for a Tejeda deal or maybe to make a run at Dontrelle.

Rosenthal is reporting the deal could be Taylor Buchholz, Taveras, and Jason Hirch. If that's the case, this moves from bad deal for the Sox to bad deal for the Astros.

So, we lost Campusano, Holdzkom, and Jason Smith. Of that group, I think I'll miss Holdzkom the most.

I'd take Peavy too. Pie and Marmol for Peavy? Pie and Marmol won't even get you in the door. It would take much, much more than that. -
My problem with Ward is if he can only play 1b, he's not going to see much time unless Lee gets hurt. If Lee is healthy, he's going to be out there every day. Ward will simply be a LH pinch hitter, and he can do that well. If Ward is capable of playing some LF or RF, then he'll have a little more value to this team.

Hughes makes it sound like Hendry should be more concerned than he is. As much as we disparage Hendry here, get well soon Jim. And sign Bonds, too.

Holy Schnickees! Why would the Royals pay anyone that much? It's not like one player will make a difference on their team. I thought Moore was smarter than this.

Love Bonds or hate him, if the Cardinals sign Bonds, we're done. Edmonds, Pujols, Bonds, Rolen would be a murderers row on pitchers.

Suppan has consistently posted 100 or better OPS+. He's not great by any means, but he's a good bet for 190 IP at league average ERA. That's a lot more than I can say for Gil Meche and Ted Lilly.
