  1. That's the problem. They may just be "marginal" upgrades but when you're around 89-90 runs each win brings your chances of making the playoffs up so much. All wins aren't created equally. Wins between 88 and 92 are the most valuable in baseball, economically and on the field wise. are you saying a win in april isn't as important as a win in september? That's not it at all. He's saying if you are an 80 win team and add two more to become an 82 win team, that's not a big deal. You're still not a playoff team. But if you are an 89 win team and can become a 91 win team, you greatly improve your chances at the postseason.
  2. One of the things that is obvious in this thread is the dearth of quality options for an upgrade. Sosa is an upgrade in an effort to help out a platoon situation, but he's not going to radically improve this team. Glaus has been mentioned, but he'd be out of position. Would he be sufficient? That depends on how reliable one believes Meph's defensive estimations to be. I have some doubts, but it's more speculation and reservation than anything specific. What else? Posada isn't likely to be available. Griffey or Dunn would be a possibility. Those two probably represent the best chance for improvement. There really isn't any true shortstops who would provide much improvement available. There are bullpen options, but any starting pitchers have concerns and warts. It's going to be tough to make any significant upgrades over the next 11 days.
  3. Does it matter if the production is from power or getting on base? Production is production. If we're not going to play Murton, trade him to a team that would value his services (im looking at you Billy Beane). Trade Murton+ for a guy like Swish. I understand that production is production. I'm not opposed to Murton being recalled; in fact I was opposed to his demotion. That being said, if we could get Sosa for say Ryan Harvey or Brian Dopirak....I really don't think he'd be a bad risk.
  4. I think 20K gets you to HOF. A lot of us who have reached that level have chosen to have custom titles however.
  5. But Murton's not a proven vet like Sosa, Meph! I'll concede that Murton might be as worthy an upgrade as Sosa. I'm not sure Murton provides the power that Sosa would bring.
  6. It's not just a limited role. It's a limited role, plus going back to where he had so many years and was made out to be a scapegoat when he left. Why would he want to come back here? He loves the city. Sosa is a romantic and wants to win a championship in a city in which he was loved. He wants the adoration of the bleacher bums as he once again sprints out to Wrigley. He wants a ring which has alluded him and he won't get in Texas. There's lots of reasons he might want to come back. Just as he were made the scapegoat, Baker could be made the scapegoat in his departure.
  7. I know...I'm not excited now, because there's still so many steps. If I make it to the top fifty for the internet vote, I might start really thinking about it.
  8. He doesn't have to retire. He could simply take 2 months off and become a free agent at the end of the year. He can control where he does (or does not) go. And how many teams would take a gander on him next offseason if he showed that kind of attitude. He practically had to beg Texas to get the job he got this year because there were concerns about his attitude. He's been close to a model citizen this year; I doubt he throws it all away because he may have reduced AB's over two months.
  9. Furthermore, for a player who wants to play next year and likely will have to do so with a limited role, quitting to stop a trade is not a smart move. Now, I know Sosa is not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I'm fairly certain he's smart enough to know that. If he's traded, whether he likes it or not, he'll put on the happy face for two months.
  10. Once again, it's a 1014 OPS vs left-handers which is why you acquire him. I'm digging that. That's mashing LHP. Of course, keep ignoring things that don't help your argument.
  11. Yeah, Vazquez played a year, then got traded. Soriano played a year, then refused to re-sign. Neither team sniffed the playoffs. That worked well. Both of those trades happend in the offseason too, not in the middle of a pennant race where somebody could come in and cost a team a playoff run. And seriously, you and Vance need to stop acting like mods. You're not. I doubt Sosa's arrival is going to cost this team anything. However, we're woeful against LHP. Despite all the flaws currently in Sosa's game, hitting against LHP isn't one of them. It's not likely to happen because of Jim. Sosa, however, doesn't have a say...and I believe he wouldn't mind the trade at all, especially as his PT in Texas begins to diminish.
  12. I'm sure there's a sentence somewhere in there, but I can't find it. There ya go. However, Sosa has no control. No NTC. The Rangers could trade him to the Devil Rays if they wanted to. Have you ever seen somebody traded to a place where he truly did not want to play? Soriano to the Nationals, spring 2006. Soriano didn't want to play left, he didn't mind going to the Nationals. and I'm sure Sosa might not want to platoon, but wouldn't mind going to Chicago (considering his agent called the Cubs first when he was looking to comeback.) Seems quite similar. Thanks for playing.

  14. I'm sure there's a sentence somewhere in there, but I can't find it. There ya go. However, Sosa has no control. No NTC. The Rangers could trade him to the Devil Rays if they wanted to. Exactly! Sosa doesn't have any control in this process. No more than Izturis had control over being traded to Pittsburgh or when Soriano was traded to Washington and told to change positions. If anyone thinks that Texas won't make a trade without thinking twice about the player being traded, see Soriano deal. He had no control. Sosa doesn't either.
  15. Then you are living in a fantasy world. A guy with 600 homers is not going to go somewhere and platoon. It's got nothing to do with sources, it has to do with me using my brain. He'll be no more than a platoon player in Texas anyway. Don't you think he'd rather be a part-time player for a contender than for a bad team? I do.Not back in the town where he was made famous and where he left on awful terms and was made to be a scapegoat by the organization. I don't think he would want to come back if he was playing everyday. Time has a tendancy to heal wounds. He'd only be commited to play for the Cubs the rest of this year. If the experience is unpleasant he can always sign elsewhere for next year.If Sosa comes back to the Cubs I will leave the board for ever. And you can quote me. It won't happen. Simple as that. Now I can add another reason to my desire to see Sammy return in addition to improving the team and the sentimentality of it. It may not happen, but it would be because of Hendry not pulling the strings, not because of any control Sosa has over the process or lack of desire to trade him by the Rangers.
  16. That may or may not be true. I'm inclined to believe that angle moreso than Sosa wouldn't want to come back or that the Rangers wouldn't trade him here. In fact, I can state with almost certainty that if Jim offered a half-way decent prospect, JD would help Sosa pack. How Hendry feels, I don't know. How much of wanting him gone was Jim and how much was Dusty? Has Sosa really changed? Admittedly, there's a lot of unknown there. It was pretty clear that Baker and Sosa didn't have a good relationship at the end of the 04 season. But Hendry was the one who did everything he could to force Sosa out of town. He went to great lengths to releasing that tape of Sosa leaving the clubhouse. I think Sosa could eventually be on the Cubs once again, but it's not going to be this year. Not as long as Hendry is running the show. And Hendry did those things while Baker was still here. It's evident Hendry defers a lot to his manager; if not, Barrett likely is still our catcher. I'm not saying it's likely, but we do have a marketing guy as team pres. Bring Sosa back for a penant chase would be a marketer's dream.
  17. That's gotta be a joke How about Jones for Bonderman? I would think you'd prefer Jeff Weaver to Bonderman.
  18. Then you are living in a fantasy world. A guy with 600 homers is not going to go somewhere and platoon. It's got nothing to do with sources, it has to do with me using my brain. Unfortunately, the evidence of that is not very convincing.

  20. Sosa is an outs machine. An out machine who hasn't made an out in over 40% of his PAs against lefties. You think Sosa will come back to the Cubs and platoon? Not gonna happen. He's essentially being platooned in Texas. He's still getting AB's because Wash likes him, but the GM is shopping him heavily. Sosa wouldn't have much choice in his role if he's traded. He no longer has that clout. Sure, I'd hope there would be discussions with him about his role before following through, but you make it sound like he has a NTC or something. He doesn't. Sosa also wants to play next year and making an ass of himself at this stage wouldn't further that cause. AB's vs. LHP: 74 AB vs. RHP: 224 I guess that's estentially being platooned. If you don't think players can controll where they want to go without having a NTC, then you are nuts. Texas won't trade him somewhere he won't want to go. Link? Link to what? Anything that substantiates Texas won't send him somewhere he doesn't want to go.
  21. Since Tex returned from the DL, Sosa is playing approximately 2 out of 3 games. That's going to decrease as the Rangers season swirls further down the crapper. Sosa knows it. Furthermore, I still think Sosa would relish another chance at a penant race, especially in Chicago. Now, I'm sure with all your sources, you've spoken to him and can set me straight, but I think there's just as much reason to believe he would accept a part-time role down the stretch as not.

  23. Sosa is an outs machine. vs LH pitching: .333/434/580/1.014 Not a lot of outs there. But, don't let facts get in the way of a good point, ok? Sosa's not going to come here and platoon. There is no chance of that happening. Same thing goes for the gold glove 1st baseman from Colorado coming here to play RF. And before you say Sosa doesn't have a NTC, it doesn't matter. If he doesn't want to go somewhere, he'll make sure he doesn't. You don't know that. Sosa has been a model citizen in Texas and isn't playing every day there. If he stays, he's eventually going to yield playing time to Jason Botts. The GM has already said as much. He doesn't have an NTC and he'll go where the Rangers ship him or quit. Since he wants to play next season, I doubt he takes the latter.
