    Agreed, but allowing our young players to actually play and learn from mistakes for once would be even better I have no problem letting Pie play; but I don't see using him for 162 games, especially against tough left-handers. As it stands, we really have no back-up CF. If Fukudome can play both RF and CF, when there is a lefty, Murton plays right and Fukudome slides to CF.

    Fukudome in CF with Murton in RF would be much better than having to trade valuable commodities for Coco Crisp or Marlon Byrd.

    Fontenot won't replaceTheriot, but he looked decent enough at SS that he could make the team as a back-up middle infielder. Patterson was ok at second, but I think there's two many other players with a leg up on him for him to make the team out of spring training.

    Did you stop to look at how the guy the Reds got back is doing? Volquez has 19 Ks and 3 BBs to go with his 3.46 ERA (bad stat?) in 13 innings this spring. He is just filthy, and is going to be the Reds 3rd or 4th starter behind Harang, Arroyo, and maybe Cueto. I'll take pitching over hitting 100 times out of 100. So far it looks like a win for both teams. You better hope he continues to display that control. In his try-out with the Rangers last season, he walked 15 in 34 innings. For 2007, he walked 75 in 178.2 IP. For 2006, he walked 17 in only 33.1 IP for the Rangers. Control has been his undoing. Granted he's young and still has a lot of time to learn to harnass his stuff. But, I would worry that the control he's shown in 13 IP could be quite fleeting once he's back on the mound come April.

    I think someone has already posted on this in another thread, but Choi, Patterson, Cruz et al were equally rated as prospects as Bruce, Votto, Cuetto, etc. I don't mean to say that Bruce, Votto, and Cuetto will follow similar paths, but to say the Cubs didn't have highly valued prospects when Dusty arrived isn't true. Our farm system at the time was just as highly regarded as the Reds is at this time. Here it is. Could the same be true of the Reds' prospects? I don't know. But to assume the Reds are better set up with young talent going into 2007 than the Cubs were going into 2003 could not be further from the truth.

    Will he? It's not hard for a GM to put a pitcher on a pitch count. Krivsky did it with Bailey last year. So, you think after all these years Dusty is going to change? Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Swift, Livian Hernandez, Russ Ortiz, and others all were in the top of PAP as pitchers for Dusty. A leopard doesn't change his spots. Keep sticking your head in the sand and be a [expletive] and make comments about people's family while Dusty ruins the careers of your young starters. Maybe some of those will be like Livian and Zambrano and survive...on the other hand if they are more like Prior or Billy Swift, it could be a torturous thing. The team might do well this year with Dusty's rah-rah style, but the fall off will come. We've seen it. Giants fans before us saw it. Dusty is not a good manager. And by the time his contract is up, I'm guessing he'll be as divisive among Reds fans as he was among Cub fans and Giants fans before him.

    I signed up as "Just Guessing" because I can't recall watching a single college basketball game this season.

    Volquez and Cuetto he'll love. He'll consistently run them out there for 110-125 pitch counts. It's the position players you'll need to worry about. Votto and Bruce will be on very short leashes while veteran hitters will have their mistakes glossed over.

    I don't really have a favorite team in the tourney, but I'm rooting for Baylor because of LaceDarius Dunn. He went to the middle school where I teach, so that's become my adopted team for the tourney.

    Fontenot went a full nine innings at SS without embarrassing himself. That's a good sign for his chances to make the roster.

    While Hauffpauir may be tearing it up this spring, he has absolutely no trade value. He's a player that any team could have claimed. He's a non-roster guy that I think has been a minor league FA at least once. I'm sure his value has risen some this spring, but not enough that he'd be anything more than a throw-in. You're probably right, but after this spring, and the fact that he isnt getting any younger, it would at least be nice to see him go somwhere he at least has a chance of making the big league roster. I agree that it would be great for him to get a chance somewhere. He's a class-act and a super guy. He works hard and deserves a shot. I don't think there's a spot for him on the Cubs. But, I don't see him being an asset in a trade based on the fact that teams could have had him for nothing had they wanted him.

    Fontenot handled that 3-6-3 DP well enough. Maybe he can perform satisfactorily enough to be carried as a legitimate option on the bench.

    While Wood as a SP may not be a great option, it would be a better risk/option than throwing Dempster out there as a starter.

    Arlington has a very short porch in RF and if Hamiton can avoid sending it too much toward CF, he should be able to increase his HR totals.
