    This is something that I've been harping on all year. Why does Dusty insist on playing Burnitz every single game. I understand he's the starting right fielder, but I think it would benefit both the team and Burnitz if got an occasional day off. He's not exactly a spring chicken anymore, trotting him out there 155 games this seasons is foolish. Besides, he's not that good anyway. He's numbers have been average. Here's hoping to seeing Burnitz get a day off today or at least within the next few days. Ah, who am I kidding. This is compounded by the fact that Murton could use some starts. Lawton could be shifted to right and Murton could start in left. Giving rest to Burnitz and sitting Macias from time to time would more than allow plenty of starts for Murton. For some reason Dusty is either too ignorant or stubborn to see this.

    The real danger in finishing this far back in the division is that the Tribune may put the reigns on payroll again. They may decide to pocket much of the salary coming off the books rather than re-invest it into the team. Instead of team with a 100 million payroll next season, we could be looking at a team with a 70-75 million payroll.

    You don't have to convince me that Dusty blows. I haven't liked the hire from day one. I just think at some point the talent we have here that Dusty WILL play (Prior, Z, ARam, Lee, Nomar, etc) will finally play to its potential, something they havent done all year. I think there's too many holes. We have some talent, but not enough to squander spots in the line-up to players like Macias on a regular basis. After Prior and Zambrano, our pitching is inconsistent and mediocre. Our line-up lacks consistency and the bottom the order scares no one. One of our best hitters hasn't started in a week and he should be starting everyday now that Hairston is hurt.

    On this date last year, the Houston Astros were 55-54. They ended up winning the Wild Card with 92 wins. I'm sure most of their fans said the same things. Realistically, I think Dusty will find some way to keep us out of the Wild Card. However, to say we have "no chance" especially considering the schedule is just "Cubsimism" that creeps into all of us this time of year. I think the fact that our manager refuses to play the best players is why I believe we realistically don't have a chance.

    I honest to god think my college team i played on could have gotten at least as many hits if not more as the Cubs got today. So pitiful. Coaching staff must go. Is that your girlfriend in your sig or just a random girl?

    Before Dusty was hired, Fredi Gonzalez was interviewed. Considering he's spent the last few years learning in the best run organization in baseball, I think he'd be an excellent choice. I would also be interested in seeing if Pat Corrales might like the job, but he might be older than anyone we prefer. I also think Brad Mills, who is the bench coach for the Red Sox might have the right pedigree for the job. Not that I think it is possible, but Riggleman, in my opinion, wasn't all that poor a choice.

    Since we're not catching Houston, finishing below the Pirates and Brewers could cost Dusty his job. I'll never hope for a loss, but maybe that's a bright side. This team needs to some serious remaking and it starts with the skipper.

    They're underachieving because of bad management. First, how long did we have a manager who structured the line-up with Perez and Patterson at the top? How many times did our manager misuse the bullpen to tragic results? Third, Murton, a hitter with a .400+ average, continues to lose playing time to the likes of Macias and before him, Hollandsworth. We could go on and on, but baseball is a difficult game. There's probably more parity than many want to believe, and when your team has weaknesses as ours does, you have to maximize all your efforts. We do not and I think the blame for that lies for the one who sits in the Big Chair. If this team had Bobby Cox for a manager, we'd be ten games over 500 right now.

    I don't think walks are the opposite of strikeouts like that. When one goes up, the other doesn't necessarily (or even usually) go down. In fact, the easiest way to cut down on strikeouts would be to cut down on walks as well by swinging early in the count and just trying to make contact. This would result in reduced production for most players though. Excellent assessment. It's possible to have excellent plate discipline and yet still strike out. Strike outs are no worse than any other out. I think much of Sosa's renaissance came from being able to hit the outside pitch the other way. As he changed his approach to hitting, pitchers were forced to come inside to him in order to try to get him out. When they missed inside and got too much of the plate, those are the pitches he'd destroy.

    As long as Dusty is managing this team, there's no use in acquiring Bellhorn. Dusty would have no clue how to use him and he'd join Murton and Cedeno on the wasted roster spots because Dusty's a moron list.

    Dunn likely gets a 5/60 deal if not more than that. I'd do 5/60. As would I. But the important thing is that if Cedeno can play SS well, Pie can play the OF well and a young pitcher can join the rotation and pitch well, the Cubs will easily be able to afford 5/60 and then some. But, unless the Reds will trade him, he won't be a FA until after the 07 season. So thinking about signing him now is a bit premature. It's not like a player with his value will be non tendered.

    I think the cubs have more talent than the Mets, their just underachieving. We have talent, Dusty just won't let the talented players play.

    I think they had planned on him sitting today and starting tommorow. They don't want to push him too much too soon. So, what's the excuse for not starting Murton all week? I would love to hear Dusty's reasoning on this. I'm sure it would be another classic Dusty quote. I wonder if we'll get one in the category of Gruzielanek is my girlfriend quote.
