  1. Another HR by Murton tonight. He's looking like he ate his wheaties.
  2. So now you are agreeing with my original statement that Def Eff is an irrelevant statistic?? or do you still think it's a good indicator of overall defense? Defensive Efficiency was brought up so i am just pointing out that the majority of good teams have better defensive efficiency's than the cubs Im not sure where i implied what you said in your post. As you say, obviously there is a correlation. This would lead me to believe, that we should work to improve the defense, not actively and obviously make it worse by going with a middle infield of Nomar and Walker. But we also need to improve the offense. Improving the defense by jettisoning two of the better offensive performers isn't going to help this team win next season.
  3. Im still waiting for DJ's first intelligent comment of the season Wait all you want, it's not coming. It's like going to wait for the great pumpkin.
  4. Wow...let's criticize something and discount it when we admittedly know nothing about it. Since we have to trust your eyes over other metrics, can you give me your reference point. What I mean is how many games are you watching weekly that aren't the Cubs? Also what qualifies you to critique defense? did you not read the other 90% of my post? please go back and take a look Well, what if I say my eyes and brain tell me their defense has been adequate. Whose eyes and brain ate telling the truth?
  5. I thought Hawk was going to cuss out Rowand on that double.

  7. Lofton's three year splits: 278/350/424 That wouldn't be too bad out of the lead-off spot. This season, he's had a resuggence of sorts, hitting 330/388/418. I wouldn't expect him to hit anywhere near that, but the 350 OBP as a stop gap until Pie is ready would be nice. At least it would solve the revolving door at lead-off. Cameron would not.
  8. I know I'm late responding, but that has to be one of the worst ideas I've read in a long time. We end up giving Walker, Hill, Dopirak, and cash for Crain and Pierre ??!?! No way. Walker is more valuable than any of those mentioned. Pierre is overrated. Just sign Kenny Lofton. His OBP is better than Pierre and he's cheaper. If you're trading those players, you better end up with more than Pierre and Crain. Wow...just reading that has left me nearly speechless.
  9. If someone had stepped on Crede's back like that on a similar play, you can bet Hawk and DA would be bitching and whining about it.
  10. AJ "Clubhouse Cancer" with an RBI. 5, 4 now with runners on 3rd and 2nd and only one out.
  11. Thank-you, Len! (Too bad I didn't get to hear it.)
  12. Excellent AB by Riot. He'd make a nice utility infielder next year. Neifi messes it up. :x
  13. When I went to ST in 2004, I think the tickets went on sale the first week of January. If you go to the website http://www.visitmesa.com, you can get some hotel packages that include tickets. We did that and ended up with seats three rows above third base.
  14. I think those that place higher value on RA and VORP will still vote for Clemens. I doubt that is a large group in the electorate, but Clemens has maintained a slight lead in the more sabermetric statistics. Those that value wins, along with the more traditional metrics, at this point will likely vote for Carpenter. However, assume Carpenter finishes with the samw 21-4 record and Willis is able to get one or two more wins down the stretch. Also, it's not inconceivable that Willis could catch Carpneter in ERA as well. Two things could happen here: 1. Willis could perform well enough to steal enough votes to win it himself. 2. Willis could take just enough of the votes from the "traditional" minded voters to give Clemens the lead. As it stands now, I think Carpenter wins it. As far as my personal feelings, it's still too close to call. Clemens has lost the edge that I felt he held a month ago, but still leads in the categories that are most convincing to me. If I were a voting member and had to cast my vote today, I'd likely mark it in Clemens favor, but would waver back and forth before doing such.
  15. Willis definitely deserves some consideration. Here are the stats: ERA: Clemens 1.89 Carpenter 2.42 Willis 2.48 Record: Clemens 12-8 Carpenter 21-4 Willis 21-9 Based on those stats, it's a toss up right now. Clemens still has the better ERA, but if the voters value wins, then he doesn't have much chance. Willis equals Carpenter in wins, but has five more losses. His ERA is close enough to warrant consideration. If looking at PR, Clemens still has the edge Clemens 54 Carpenter 50 Willis 48 Once again, Willis trails Carpenter, but it's still incredibly close. The final starts down the stretch likely will determine who of the three actually end up with the award. Two dominant starts by Willis could propel him to the lead in the minds of the voters.
  16. I still think they'll get in, but now more likely as the wild card. However, if they choke it all away....man, will that be hilarious.
  17. If the Sox choke this one away, it will be the funniest thing I've seen in a long, long time.
  18. I'm so enjoying watching the complete and utter collapse of the White Sox.
  19. Vance, With respect to getting "a big bat in right," although he's not a big blip on the conventional wisdom radar since he's not a free agent, I could envision the Cubs making an offer to Washington this off-season for Jose Guillen. From what I have read in some Washington papers lately, the guy is a moody brooder, who has had private run-ins with Frank Robinson and team leader Brian Schneider this season, and has made some of the young guys very uncomfortable. Despite being owed a very fair $4M in 2006, the Nationals may feel trading him for young pitching (they have no answers right now after Livan, Loiaza and Patterson) could be the way to go. I'm sure Dusty could handle him. Hoops I think I could live with the acquisitions of Lofton and Guillen, if we hang on to Nomar and Walker. It's not splashy, but this line up: Lofton CF Walker 2B Lee 1b Ramirez 3B Garciaparra SS Guillen RF Barrett C Murton LF would not be too bad. Also, that would leave a lot of cash to pursue help for the rotation or bullpen. I could live with those acquisitions provided we put together a productive bench and bullpen.
  20. Yep. It basically game down to Zambrano vs Carpenter, which I found quite fitting considering the league.
  21. Thanks to a hell of an effort by Zambrano (my team) beating Carpenter (Thrillride) I tied up the wins category to move into the championship game. I need a great week by Lee and Vlad to lead my injury ravaged team to the championship.
  22. I still think Hendry will sign Kenny Lofton to a 1-year incentive-laden deal to play CF and lead-off. That will give Felix Pie another season in the minors - perhaps he'll be a 2nd half call-up. With the Lofton signing, I also think Hendry will keep Hairston as a utility player, who can start in CF against tough lefties. I think many in the Cubs brass still believe that for 2006 Lofton will come very close to duplicating his .388 OBP from this year and his .381 OBP in the 2nd half of 2003. Supposedly, with the exception of Sosa and Alou, his teammates loved him in 2003. Lofton might not be a bad option for CF. He'll come cheap, can answer the lead-off question and allow the Cubs to get a big bat in right and keep Nomar for SS.
  23. A Cleveland sweep of the Sox would be sweet!
