  1. Cubsden is claiming source states that the Tigers would be willing to trade Turner, probably Porcello and 2 prospects for Garza, but they may want another propsect back. I would love to get Turner, Porcello and Smyly(sp) or Oliver. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2011/12/latest-on-garza-could-cubs-expand-deal-with-tigers/
  2. Sounds like the Cubs need to get this done.
  3. Source? Or just trolling? I thought Backtobanks was a decent poster. #-o I really don't see any combination of players that I would want from the Marlins. Maybe they will take Zambrano and Soriano with Garza.
  4. The Cubs did not "clear" 250 mil. They did have 258 mil in revenues. But 157 mil in player expenses. Add other expenses and they "cleared" 23 mil pre-tax. The Rickets likely can spend, but the numbers you use say the opposite. if they're making 23 million over total operating expenses, that makes them one of the most financially successful franchises in MLB. if they can pump 20 million of that surplus revenue back into payroll, that puts it at 177 mil. what's payroll for 2012 at right now? the fact that he chose the wrong word there doesn't negate his actual point. and that was with a losing team. So far with Theo on board it looks like the team is going to make another $30MM or whatever he saves on payroll. Sad that fans will pay for such a crappy product.
  5. Any word on cost of the contracts? I thought I heard that Corpas signed for $1MM base with $700-900K in incentives. Maybe Theo is betting that he is a good candidate to rebound and that he will be tradeable at the deadline.
  6. read, then post. Taking your own advice would serve you well. Sonnastine and Corpas are currently wasting roster space and unless one of them have a miraculous comeback year, neither one of them make the team likely to win more games next year.
  7. I think Theo/Hoyer are trying to put together the worst team possible in 2012 in order to get a great draft pick. Is there a can't miss prospect that will go 1st next year?
  8. Turner and 2 out of (Smyly, Crosby, Castellanos and Oliver) and that would get it done for me. So far though, Turner seems to be the best prospect on the table as of now.
  9. The Cubs could do a ton better than Matt Harrison. Harrison had a really good year last year, but there is nothing about his history or stats that would make anyone think he could repeat it. Trading Garza is the chance the Cubs have to get a prospect with front of the rotation type stuff, not another middle/back of the rotation type starter.
  10. Heck no. top 5? I mean, I can understand KG's optimistic take of 11th in the system, but top 5? Baez, Brett Jackson, Szczur, McNutt, Rhee Maples, Wells, and etcetera would easily top him for me. He's not that much more advanced than Marco Hernandez, and hernandez has a better shot to stick at short, so I'd take Marco over him. Our system isn't terrible. Even almost all of the key analyzers out there have acknwoledged that we aren't terrible. Below average, yes. But for a Jose Altuve type to be top 5 would mean a terrible system. I agree, I think the prevailing thought that the Cubs system is terrible, is dead wrong. The biggest problem with the system though is that most of the really promising players are still at the lower levels of the system. Torreyes will fit in nicely with all of the lower level infield prospects and give the Cubs more room for error in hoping that they can develop some of those guys into useful players. Between DeVoss, Hernandez, Watkins, Baez, Watkins and Torreyes the future middle infield is looking promising.
  11. Have the Cubs made one improvement this off season? I suppose you could argue that Wood is an improvement at SP, but this is pretty depressing.
  12. Over $1MM uggh :banghead: I thought we fired Hendry to get rid of this nonsense? This offseason started off great with the Theo signing and has been depressing ever since.
  13. Much more promising than some of the other prospects listed. Works in the low 90's and tops out at 97mph. Seems to have started to figure things out. The other two Coddington and Ward make absolutely no sense. The other name he gave me was Yorman Rodriguez Corcino and Rodriguez. Yes please. As great as that would be. We most likely would only get one I would prefer Corcino to Rodriguez, but either one would be decent.

The other two Coddington and Ward make absolutely no sense. The other name he gave me was Yorman Rodriguez Sounds like another player with a lot of upside. I would actually like this trade if those are the two prospects involved.

  16. Did Theo need to trade Marshall to have enough to re-sign Reed Johnson?
  17. He stole a base almost 50% of the time he reached based. He also scored approximately half of the time that he reached base. Pretty amazing numbers. You do realize that him scoring that often only has a small amount to do with his ability right? The SB numbers are impressive though. I disagree, in most cases you may be right, but the fact that he puts himself into scoring position that often and apparently has good speed is pretty indicative of a guy that will score a lot of runs.

  19. If this means no Coco Crisp, I guess I'm okay with it.
  20. FFS can we stop comparing every non front end starter to Randy Wells? I'd have interest in Wood but not for Marshall. Id shop him to TB and see if we could work out a deal for Wade Davis though. However, if Wood is the best we could get for Marshall I'd go for it. Marshall could be in for a much higher payday than we're willing to give him. To bad Hendry couldn't have given him an extension instead of throwing money at John Grabow for no good reason. Your right, Wells has actually had a better season than Wood has had. But they are both underwhelming starting pitchers that have at least one season well above their perceived ability. Point still stands that Wood is a terrible return for Marshall. The Cubs would be trading a ERA+ 160 pitcher for an ERA+86 pitcher. Please no.
  21. As sad as that is, you are dead on. The Cubs would be smart to trade Marmol and Marshall. I do think they could do much better than Travis Wood though for both of them.
  22. The Cubs already have Travis Wood in Randy Wells, they don't need another one. That would be a terrible return for Sean Marshall, unless the Reds are throwing in some good prospects.
  23. There is a lot more complexity to the posting system than this. Game theory is important, especially when the end result is immediately writing a check for dozens of millions of dollars. I see that point, but you would hope a big market team like the Cubs, with a lot of money coming off the books, would have the flexibility to make it happen.
  24. I'm starting to think that the Cubs aren't going to be in on Fielder. Even if they got Fielder, you still have zero upgrades at any other position this off season. DeJesus is fairly likely to be an upgrade over whoever's spot he takes. Granted, not by much. I would hope, but the Cubs RF's last year combined to put up better numbers than DeJesus.
  25. Most people were assuming the bid would be higher, and they were barely right. Dice-K went for $51.something million and Darvish went for $51.something million. If Theo made a competitive bid (which we'll probably never find out) then I'm happy, I don't really care what that number actually is. Theo could have exceeded the amount he bid for Dice-K and still lost to Texas. Losing the bid for Darvish doesn't in and of itself mean the Boston guys were right and the Cubs aren't willing to spend money. I disagree, Theo set the market for this type of posting. The fact that he didn't exceed his previous bid by less than $1MM tells me that he wasn't serious about winning the bid. As far as what the Cubs bid, we will never know with any accuracy what the actual Cubs bid amount was, because they are sealed. The really frustrating part about this off season is the lack of any movement to improve the team. I realize it is still early in the off season, but as of now every top tier pitcher is off the market and the Cubs didn't end up with any of them. The offense has gotten worse. The only thing the Cubs have done so far is save money from payroll.
