  1. Jackson has made it 6 innings so far without striking out.
  2. I wonder how much Theo is actually involved in that? Is it like a "Co-GM" situation? Or do they just meet about things and then Theo lets Jed actually do the trade haggling? Does Jed have to run a big trade through Theo first? Just curious about the logistics. Based on an interview I saw/read earlier this season with Jed Hoyer, he stated that they basically split the duties based upon which one has a better relationship with the GM they are dealing with. It also sounded like they try to build a consensus on decisions. I think it is safe to assume that Theo has final say.
  3. Wow, the Boise OFers have had a tough time on offense so far this season. Dunston, Kim, Batista and Martin (SSS) are all hitting near or under .200. Rademacher is the only OF that has been raking since his promotion to Boise. I wonder if the demotion means that Soler is headed to Boise. Also, Almora will have no problem finding playing time with Boise if that is where they send him.
  4. Sounds like speculation. Unfortunately, no reporter seems to have an inside source right now.
  5. The results at the plate were pretty good, but almost certainly unsustainable. Holy crap, he walked 5 times and struck out 63 times in just 266 PA? I guess they were sustainable. .302/.354/.450 at the break. This thread is comical in retrospect. I'm not a big Reed Johnson fan. But he's an entirely reasonable 4th/5th outfielder, and amount of OMG THE SKY IS FALLING POSTS because we spent 1.5 million on a competent reserve outfielder was (and is) hilarious. I think that he was in some respect unappreciated. As a 4th or 5th OF a team could do a lot worse. Problem with the Cubs signing him though is that the 4th or 5th OF was the least of the Cubs problems this year, and unless they can trade him for something useful the $1MM was a waste of money.
  6. Like it or not, they could be the best fit. They have an incredibly deep farm system and have been hemmorhaging young players out of nowhere for the past few years now. I'd happily swing a deal with them for Garza and Marmol. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them in on Hamels as well. They have already shown that they are not afraid to deal within the division. If the Cardinals overpaid for Garza or Marmol I wouldn't object. Have they? Here are the most recent trades by the Cards to each team in the division: By "they" I was referring to the Cubs new management and the Marshall trade to the Reds.
  7. Disappointing to hear Sveum talk about Volstad after the game. Said Volstad didn't stick to the game plan going in, and shook off Clevenger quite a bit. Also stated that Volstad wasn't fooling anybody even when he was getting outs. Unfortunately, he said they have no other option unless Dempster makes his next start. Seems like the skipper is not happy at all with Volstad.

  9. I'm sure this has been asked already, but with the new CBA if the Cubs spend $1-2MM less than allotted on picks 1-10 are they able to spend that money in rounds 11 on? I've noticed that they have been saving some here and there with some of the earlier picks.
  10. You are going to feel pretty silly when Tim Saunders is an All Star SS in 2-4 years.
  11. He had a decent glove, but his bat was pretty bad. Watched him take batting practice on Sunday and he couldn't hit anything hard. Disappointing that his wrist is still bothering him. I'm guessing he is done.
  12. Love to read the article, just hate that fact you have to set up an account to read it. I miss Bruce's writing. :( I wonder if the change has been successful for the Daily Herald? Great to see Theo/Jed outbid everyone for Soler. Scouting reports seem very promising. Hmmm...really? I don't have any account and can read it just fine. I remember the paywall thing awhile ago, but it isn't applying to this article at least (for me). Article loads fine, but then there is a big box that blocks the text and tells me to log in.

  14. At this point we can only hope that the team finishes with the worst record in baseball and gets the #1 pick in next year's draft. Anything else at this point, would be a massive failure.
  15. That is a valid point. Will there be better free agent options which will be more cost effective in the off season? The Cubs will have a ton of money to spend in free agency this off season.
  16. Whether true or not, this new CBA is a massive FAIL. Bud thought this would get players being drafted in line with talent and instead half the players drafted in the 5-10 rounds probably were barely draftable at best. Its not necessarily bad for the teams. If HS kid picks college over MLB, the scouts get a longer period to evaluate the player and presumably the player would be closer to the majors after several years of college.
  17. The point of the draft is to get the best players possible, not sacrifice that to get the players who might be the quickest to arrive at the big leagues. This is no sign of whether the Cubs plan on competing sooner or later. Add to that the new complication of balancing bonuses with the new CBA. It sure sounds like Appel has no interest in signing without massive bonus demands that would ruin the rest of the Cubs draft (and play one in Boras' playbook this year is trying to convince teams to be willing to pay the penalty in picks and money, per Kevin Goldstein). That is fair enough. Like I said, it will be interesting to see when it comes down to it, what it will take for the Pirates to sign Appel. I just think he may have overplayed his hand and doesn't much leverage at this point. I do agree though, if you believed that there is no way that he signs for less than a 60-75%+ of your draft budget, it doesn't make sense.
  18. You realize there are other ways to acquire major league starting pitching than blowing an entire draft on a single prospect, right? By the time that he slipped all the way to #6 he didn't have much leverage as far as his demands. I guess we will find out fairly quickly what he is willing to accept or turn down.
  19. Not very impressed with the first day of the draft. I think the Cubs will regret not taking Appel, when he was literally gifted to them. For a team that has a huge talent void on the pitching side, he would have immediately become their top pitching prospect and at least given them realistic hope of having a front of the rotation starter in the next few years. Obviously we can't judge the draft based on the first day alone, but so far the draft is indicating that the Cubs don't expect to compete for a few more years. Maples is still at least 3-4 years away from the big leagues (if he can stay healthy), Blackburn, if they are able to sign him, is very raw and cannot be expected to contribute for a while. Johnson looks more like a solid back of the bullpen guy, and has some injury concerns. McNutt is struggling, Whitenack is not close and is no guarantee that he will regain form, Rhee is unimpressive so far this year......Where are they going to get rotation help from?
  20. It's like Jim Hendry is still running the team. Just what the Cubs needed, another potential back of the bullpen arm.
  21. Why take Appel and destroy the rest of your draft when you can get Almora and still pick up some nice players? Because the system needs pitching and he would have instantly become the best pitching prospect in the system.
  22. This draft is shaking out great so far. Will be impossible not to get a good arm now.
