  1. Is that straight from the Cubs press release? or the Muskat article?
  2. Maybe they have already agreed to a deal and are waiting until Wednesday (the first day he can be signed) to announce it?
  3. CS is saying that the Cubs are getting cash along with the deal.
  4. I'd rather have gone after a minor leaguer and saved even more. I'm glad Infante is young and has potential, but still. I hope this would stop the Matsui talk. Maybe this allow Hendry to trade Cedeno to the DRays for Crawford?
  5. Oh boy, that article makes it seem like Infante is the backup plan/part time platoon partner for Pie in CF. Making a signing of Matsui still possible. ](*,)
  6. While this is certainly a terrible deal for the Cubs, I can't help but wonder whether or not Jacque quietly demanded a trade out of town. He's never seemed happy here, and may have pushed the issue behind closed doors. Of course, this probably means that Pie and Murton will start next year in CF and RF (unless God forbid that Rotoworld prediction of Luis Gonzalez comes to fruition.) You can rest assured that Hendry will dig up some past his prime veteran to take time away from those guys.
  7. Typical Cubs offseason: Cubs needs: OF power bat Cubs acquire: Weak hitting MI's Kaz Matsui and Omar Infante Cubs lose: OF semi power bat Doesn't this move make it less likely that they would sign Matsui? I really don't see the point of adding two light hitting MI's, when you already got Theriot, Fontenot, Cedeno on the roster.
  8. Great picture in that article of Jacque. Terrible trade for the Cubs, although, I can't say that I am suprised.
  9. And sign with the Cubs Tuesday we could never be so lucky Yeah, it would take until at least wednesday for Hendry to get off his arse and call the agent. But isn't it already monday in Japan? The article says that he can't sign until Wednesday at the earliest. Wednesday works for me................ you? Yep :D

  11. I'm waiting for the day when we will see trade rumors or speculation that is actually worth getting excited about. Jones for Infante? Marquis for Winn? Signing K. Matsui? Jim Hendry has lost it.
  12. This coming Tuesday. So in addition to a horrible contract, will the Cubs lose a draft pick for signing Matsui?
  13. Key word is "upgrade". Matsui is arguably not an upgrade offensively at SS over Theriot. Even if you were to argue that he were an upgrade, you would be out of your mind to argue that he is worth spending $3- 4MM over Theriot. This is a move that make absolutely no sense at all. From all the reports, it sound like this is the case of Hendry bidding against himself once again. The new GM is going to be stuck with alot of bad contracts.
  14. It is still not a benefit. He isn't playing for free. I really cannot understand this. Baseball shouldn't be a fraternity club. It might help Fukudome transition better. If it's for a few pennies, why not. if its 3 years 12 mil...jim hendry's probably murdered before sundown, unfortunately. What do you mean unfortunately? Poorly worded. He was referring to the contract. We have been hearing some good things come out so far this offseason. Marquis on the block, Interest in trading Jones, Hendry's recognition that the Cubs need to add OBP to the lineup, the Cubs interest in Fukudome....etc. Just when you think maybe Hendry has a clue, you hear this ridiculous rumor about Matsui and a possible 3 year deal. I refuse to believe that any person in his/her right mind would offer Matsui a 3 year deal. My hope is that Matsui's agent is trying his best to get Colorado to pony up the cash, by using the Cubs as competitors. The Cubs have so many more needs on the team than a light non-hitting 2b.
  15. 3-year contract? ](*,) 3 years is insane.
  16. I'm under the impression that signing Matsui has more to do with improving the odds of signing Fukudome, and I'm actually fine with that. He wouldn't be a waste of salary. He would be a nice complement to Theriot at SS from the left side of the plate. Also, if the Cubs end up with an outfield that consists of Jones, Pie and Fukudome, DeRosa provides a bat from the right side in RF on the occasion when the Cubs want to load up with RH bats against a LHP. Matsui has been terrible since coming over to the states. So far he has had one decent year, and even those numbers are heavily padded by playing at Coors Field. Away from Coors his stats were .249 BA .305 OBP .637 OPS. If his agent is worth anything he will flip his one decent year into a multiyear deal. That is a waste of salary IMO.
  17. Matsui would be a waste of salary. The Cubs would be better off to have a competition between Theriot and Cedeno, and use the resources for a significant improvement elsewhere.
  18. Craig - Do the scouting reports you have read have him in the low 90's? The report I read regarding Kuroda from the Seattle paper stated that he throws in the mid -90's with a slider, and a shootball(sp?). I would think that he would have a higher K rate if that were the case. I wonder if the Seattle paper was just making his stuff sound better than it really is?
  19. You must of forgot about 2003, 2004, and 2007. Sure they didn't get it done, but even this year many of the so called experts thought they would do well once they made the playoffs. I don't necessarily like him but this is the first time that I can remember being a Cub fan and realistically expecting them to go to the playoffs on a semi yearly basis.
  20. Sounds like too much speculation. Drew is not a Hendry type player.
  21. Why not just trade Jones to the Padres?
  22. So if the Cubs tender Prior and keep him for $3MM and resign Wood for $5MM, that would leave them with $7MM to spend on 4 positions. It would be nice to see Hendry trade Marquis, Dempster and Jones, just to have some money to spend. Lets pray that Hendry isn't nuts about Hunter. I don't think Hunter is a terrible CF, but his production doesn't justify the type of contract he is going to get this year in free agency. In regard to Arod, Hendry has shown in the past that he is not shy about backloading contracts or being creative with signing bonuses. I think if he truly has $15MM - $20MM to spend this year, it may open the possibility of signing Arod.
  23. Have you ever been great at anything in your life? Have you ever been competetive anything in your life? I'm guessing a big negative on that one. He won't get paid as much as a reliever.
  24. Quit thinking like that...now its 2 years 14 million...still bad, but not as bad. Actually, it's $16.25/2. Even worse. And while I get the "only 2 years left" plan for making yourself sane, the truth is that we can't pretend that he didn't have an effect on our team in 2007. Both in performance and salary that could have been allocated in areas of greater need. He makes $9.88M in 2009. Will he even be more than a mop-up man by then? It's entirely possible he may be out of baseball altogether. Lets not get carried away. Marquis is not a top tier pitcher, but the investment the Cubs made in him last year was not bad. I don't know if he will continue to produce at the same rate, but there are plenty of teams out there that would have loved to have the numbers Marquis put up last year near the end of their rotation. My guess is that Hendry trades him this offseason.
  25. No. They will go to the last minute on this. Why would they announce this now? It's probably that Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn is staying and not going to St. Louis. That's what Bruce Levine reported today anyway. that doesn't have the bursting-at-the-seams-to-hold-off-until-after-WS feel that Carroll seems to be implying, though you may still be right. Win Win situation for Carroll. Now he will be right no matter what happens.
