  1. So who is going to pitch tonight? Marshall is out of the question since he pitched last night. Shark? Hart? Guzman?
  2. Bankruptcy courts are notorious for giving huge amounts of leeway to debtors in Chapter 11. Unless there is something incredibly fishy about the deal or the creditors are raising a stink about it, the court's not going to do anything to block the sale. Neither is MLB or the owners. In an environment when sellings large assets is really difficult, these guys would be idiots to pull that off. If there really is an agreement in place, Ricketts effectively has control, and if he wants, can instruct Hendry to make moves. But I'd bet he doesn't really want to do that. His first big splash will be this fall, and the 2010 season will be the first "signature season" under his ownership. Or maybe this year is ripe for making Ricketts look like a hero by acquiring a Peavy type pitcher.
  3. The two together might be a bit too redundant, unless they wanted to platoon them. It'd also take away most of the power on our bench. I'd only trade one of the two - preferably Fox. I'd much rather trade Hoffpauir. Fox can play the positions Micah plays, and he's probably a better hitter too. Not to mention, he's younger, and can backup 3b. We'd probably get more for Fox, though. That's my reasoning in a nutshell. All the reasons you'd prefer Fox are the reasons we won't get much of anything for Hoff. His value is as a power lefty bat off the bench and that's as far as it goes. I can't imagine anybody would view him as a starter. That type of player might net us a Heilman-esque reliever or so. Hoff is more valuable to us that that, though. Agreed, he is a cheap bench bat. It sure beats overpaying for a Darryl Ward or Todd Hollandsworth.
  4. I'm sure that Patton will pitch much better once he is fully healthy. :-)) In all seriousness though, I can't see the Cubs giving up on him at this point.
  5. Was Freel on the 25 man roster? :-)) :-))
  6. you know who has proven he can hit? milton bradley. Yes, since the beginning of June he has actually been one of the best hitters on the team.
  7. Is everyone assuming that Kevin Hart stays? My guess would be he is the most likely to get sent down. So.... Hart, Fuld and either Hoffpauir or Shark get sent down. I thought I heard Len saying that Blanco is out of options and that pretty much secured his place on the roster. I think the Cubs would be foolish to send Fox down.
  8. He is playing like he has something to prove.
  9. Lee is the only player on the team that is deserving of an all-star game appearance. Unfortunately, the NL is stacked with better 1b, so it will probably be Lilly.
  10. From the Cubs: Jake Fox is still a bat with no position. Randy Wells will eventually turn into a pumpkin. at AAA: Chris Robinson could be expendable since the Cubs have a relatively young Soto and Clevenger at AAA plus Wellington Castillo if he hits any at AA. at AA: Tyler Colvin has hit well at Tenn. Not that the Cubs would throw him in for just anybody but they did just use the #1 pick on a cf and there are doubts that Colvin can stick in CF. Quite the contrary, Fox has shown the he can handle 3rd base and he hasn't looked that bad in the OF either. Sure he won't win a gold glove, but his defense problems have been greatly exaggerated.
  11. Is Castro hurt? Don't seem him in the lineup again for Daytona.
  12. The home plate ump is terrible. You could throw four pitches in the exact same spot and he might call 2 a ball and 2 a strike.
  13. Wonder if Soriano is hurt, or if Lou is just giving him a breather? Lets hope that Fuld can continue to add a spark to the lineup.
  14. Hendry is really digging in the garbage with this move. Maybe after Miles, Freel, Blanco, Scales he is playing the odds that he will eventually get lucky at some point.
  15. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-02-cubs-brite-chicago-jul02,0,3892212.story Did anyone catch what that quote is? According to 670 The Score, it was "We paid this guy $30 million and nothing is his fault." Sounds like a fair quote to me.
  16. Interesting...if nothing else. Maybe he has been traded to the Yankees.
  17. Premium content with scouting reports for those top 25: http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/prospects/international-affairs/2009/268475.html So is Kirby Pena also known as Jose Pena? Or is he not considered top 25?
  18. Castro with 25 errors at about the midway point? Anybody got the scoop on his fielding? That seems like a lot of errors this early.
  19. So we trade a cheap very effective pitcher for Heath Bell? I like Bell, but moves like that don't make for long term success.
  20. Now we are seeing that Blanco and Scales would have been better/cheaper options, I'm sure that even Hendry would agree that signing Miles was a mistake.
  21. That seems weird to me. His season has been slow start, extremely hot May, very bad June with one nice weekend at the end. Why not try and see if the guy can establish some sort of consistency? Are they thinking he's like the bored genius in school who struggles because he's not challenged and doesn't try? This has the signs of overaggressive Cubs promotions. A good half season in FSL means he'll almost certainly start 2010 in AA, and once that happens the pressure to call him up to the bigs will be large. I don't have a problem with his promotion. If he wouldn't have had the health issues it is likely he would have started the year in Daytona this year anyways, and the consensus from most of the scouting reports indicate that his bat is A+ ready now.
  22. In other news Mark Sanford calls Bill Clinton an adulterer.
  23. Nice. I wonder who will replace him in Daytona? Will they just keep Craig Muschko in the rotation or will they promote, say, Chris Carpenter from Peoria? I'd like to see Carpenter moved up. He already seemed fairly polished when I saw him earlier in the season, but he's a bit old for Peoria and I'd like to see him somewhere a bit more age-appropriate. He's a lock for my Top 10 if he finishes the season healthy after having pitched 140+ innings. you get your wish. Nice, now if Archer could get some control, the Cubs might have some real nice pitching prospects in the minors again.
  24. This year keeps getting worse for Hendry.
  25. Good to see him heating up again.
