  1. Probably Murton  Unless hendry swings a deal before gametime.... All speculation so far is that it will be Grieve or Mitre. The Cubs need Murton's RH bat, and he has not hurt his cause by hitting well.
  2. The only way I can see Gerut fitting into the OF is in a platoon with Hairston. Gerut bats lefty so he'll see the bulk of the time in a straight L/R platoon. Which would be stupid, because Hairston is the only leadoff hitter we have, and he's been doing quite well in that role. That would be a crappy way to treat him. "Yeah, you've been doing great leading off, but we just got this kid from Cleveland who's gonna take most of your playing time. Thanks for nothing" I don't understand why the perception is that once Hairston has started leading off that he has been doing well? His OBP in June was .333 and July .305, he has been getting progressively worse as the season goes on. Just a thought, it is possible that the recent surge in offense is due to moving Todd Walker to the number 2 spot, and have nothing to do with Hairston.
  3. I agree, I just don't see how a left handed hitting backup OF who can play all positions and get on base is a bad thing. This move Macias back on the depth chart and we should be seeing less of him PHing in late game situtations.
  4. Patterson is 25, twenty-five. Through no fault of his own, he has had to learn the game at the major league level. He may never live up to his potential, but right now in AAA he is a better center fielder than Pierre. ??? Pierre is 27 and has already put up numbers Corey will likely never put up. Potential will only get you so far, before the time comes when you realize that a player doesn't have what it takes. I'm not saying Corey is there yet, but so far is career numbers show that he is Neifi Perez with a little more power.
  5. Pierre's SB % is a huge improvement over Hairston. 20 more SB's and still CS less than Hairston. That is 20 more singles or walks that were in essence doubles. Pierre has much better range than Hairston. You are right Pierre doesn't have a great arm, but he is hardly lacking range. Looking at their career numbers to say that Hairston is comparable to Pierre is a joke. Once again, nothing that you said backs up your point.
  6. Patterson's year was cut short in 2003, but he was playing better than Pierre at the time. Much better. Patterson had a higher VORP than Pierre in 2002 as well. Last year was easily Pierre's best. This year he has one of the lowest OBP of all leadoff men in baseball. His OBP is well below the NL average. If we're looking at him as a short-term fix, we're looking in the wrong place. Neifi Perez career .269 BA .300 OBP Corey Patterson career .257 .298 OBP Patterson has shown nothing.
  7. The end of May? He hit .262/.292/.355 in June, which was worse than his April. In July he has been pretty good in over 60 AB's. I would rather take the chance that he just had a bad month, than stick with a guy with a career .335 OBP who gets thrown own more times than he steal bases. Hairston is a great bench player, but to think that all of the sudden he is going to be the answer to the Cubs leadoff prayers is not realistic.
  8. So on the one hand, you don't have faith that CPatt, who is struggling, can turn things around this season, but on the other hand, you do have faith that Juan Pierre, who is stuggling, will turn things around this year. :? Juan Pierre has over 200 hits in 3 of last 4 years. I think he has proven himself more than Patterson. Big difference between a guy that has a career .356 OBP .307 avg. and a guy with a career .298 OBP and a .257 avg. Patterson wishes he was half the player Pierre was.
  9. I am starting to think they are arguing just for the sake of arguing. Case in point, it has been repeated over and over that Pierre gets Caught Stealing alot. Pierre has 26 SB this year as compared to 7 CS Hairston 6 SB compared to 8 CS!!!!! Pierre has stolen 20 more bases than Hairston and still been thrown out less. There is really no comparison. Of course if you steal alot of bases you are going to get thrown out. But his rate is considerably better than Hairston.
  10. FWIW, Pierre has an OPS of .746 over the last year and a half (.355/.391). Hairston has an OPS of .760 (.365/.395). Those steals aren't worth the player(s) req'd to get him or the salary Pierre will command. Pierre is a career .307 hitter with a .356 OBP and Walks more than he SO's. Hairston is a career .262 hitter with a .335 OBP with more SO's than Walks. Pierre is gold glove caliber. Hairston is a back up 2B, who is playing OF. I like Hairston too, but there really is no comparison. I think there is quite a comparison. Pierre is no gold glove CF. Where is OPS in your discussion? OPS? Sorry, but I don't think your leadoff hitters SLG % matters. If you want a homerun hitter at leadoff, fine. But most people would prefer someone who can get on base. Slugging does not equal home runs. It's the ability to get past first base on your own, which is essential to scoring runs consistently. Given Pierre's low SLG and poor SB%, that makes him less valuable as a leadoff hitter. OK, just for fun: Pierre career OPS .734 Hairston career OPS .709 and BTW Hairston's pickoff rate and SB % is nothing special.

  14. Poor defender? Do you know who Pierre is or are you thinking of another player? He covers a great deal of ground in CF, in case you haven't seen him play before. Just because he doesn't have a great arm doesn't make him a poor defender. Also, to those that compare him to Hairston there is one big difference. Pierre has actual hit well over the course of an entire year (200+ hits 3 of last 4 years). Hairston is nothing more than a part time player. Sometimes I think some people are a little over optimistic projecting how good "such and such" is going to be, just because they are young. Hairston could only hope that he could put up Pierre like numbers over the course of a year.
  15. Not bad at all... with the exception of Neifi being in it. Not much sense complaining about him now. If Nomar is coming back in 2 weeks starting SS is a moot point.
  16. Hey. Mizzou..... you could do worse !! I mean, think of it this way.... you're not having to watch Leicester, Dempster, Rusch, Mitre, or Koronka start, right ?? I got to watch Koronka start...:puker: That sucks.
  17. I'm suprised Macias isn't starting. Seems like Dusty clears the bench whenever Maddux is pitching.
  18. On WGN's SportsCentral a while ago, the said that Murton would be starting today.... but didn't give the whole lineup. Starting Lineup Name AVG HR RBI SB 1. M Lawton, RF .274 10 40 10 2. 19. I'm sure that Cedeno will get sent down. He is not exactly excelling in a backup role.
  20. Pie Walker Lee Ramirez Nomar Burnitz Barrett Holly/Murton
  21. I've been looking, but they aren't up anywhere yet. They are on cbssportline. I'm sure there will be alot of complaints but not much changed except Hollandsworth at 8 instead of Murton.
  22. It seems pretty evident that Hairston won't be staying in Chicago longterm anyways. I think there is more to the Hairston situation than any of us know. From reports hardly anybody in the organization likes him. There are constant complaints of his intellegence and ability to play heads up baseball. I even found it interesting the other day when listening to Ron on the Radio and he was going off on Hairston, calling one of his plays "just stupid". If they can get some value, it would probably be a good idea to trade him now. If all they get is Preston Wilson, it would be a horrible trade.
  23. Nice Article. This article seemed to imply, what most of us assume, that Baker is indeed on a short lease. Maybe this will encourage him to give the Rooks a shot.
  24. Are you guys sure that Murton will be capable of playing LF? I hear it is pretty difficult to learn.
