  1. Actually, with Nomar's limited range and lack of alternatives in the Cubs system, having Nomar at 2B makes a lot of sense. If Nomar and Mia have built a home in the Chicago metro area, he might be willing to make the transition. Hopefully Neifi will find a gig as a starter somewhere else in 2006. He has deserved it. It's not Neifi's fault that Dusty put him 1-2 in the batting order instead of 7-8.
  2. I would not be surprised if teams were enamored of Hill at the trade deadline. However, from many of the reports I've heard about the Reds, they were trying to hold teams for ransom with Kearns, Dunn, and Pena. It's not like the Cubs were asked for Hill straight up in exchange for Dunn; it was more likely a package of Hill, Pie, and Marshall for Dunn. If Hill was the base line asking price, there are a bunch of franchises out there with a comparable or better pitching prospect who could have topped that offer. Clearly, no team did. Either we way overvalue those players or the asking price was too much for any team to bare. Considering how tight the WC race and how an addition like Dunn or Kearns would turn the tide, I'm guessing the price was just too much. It's one thing to foolishly clutch prospects overvalued by the market until they no longer have value any more. It's another thing entirely to gut your farm system. Hendry is thinking about 2006-2007. Why else would Macias be playing CF right now? If Hill can develop a third pitch (cutter or change), then he could be an effective #3 or #4 pitcher. Zambrano had his troubles in the majors until he develop his off-speed pitches.
  3. Macias is not a problem. I like Macias's attitude and hustle. What is is the problem is that Dusty uses him instead of Murton, Cedeno, or other younger players who need ABs to develop. Macias is to Dusty is what a bottle of gin is to an alcoholic.
  4. I sincerely doubt that Dusty has ever gotten the best out of any team. His managerial style doesn't allow for it. His approach would be very good for a veteran team where the players are professional and are self-motivated. The Cubs are a team in transition, which doesn't play to Dusty's strengths.
  5. Brendan Harris Jason Dubois Bobby Hill Hee Seop Choi When it comes to position prospects, Hendry knows when to hold them and when to fold them. Will be interesting to see if Murton and Cedeno are with the parent club at the end of 2006.
  6. Don't jinx him with the injury bug. [-X
  7. We have too many proven veterans and too few younger players. Give Murton a chance in LF next year.
  8. What they DON'T do well: 1. Walk / work the count 2. Play the right people in the right place. Instead Dusty has Hawkins as closer, CPatt + Neifi batting 1-2, and Hollandsworth in LF instead of the bench. 3. Play high-energy rookies instead of low-energy proven vets
  9. Seventeen games into his time at West Tenn, Montanez is doing very well: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/Stats/teamstats.html?did=998&t=t_ibp&cid=104 How does this change his status as a prospect? Could he be playing at Wrigley by mid-season next year?
  10. While it's not the blockbuster trade everyone was hoping for, it does add to the depth and versatility of the team. As of right now, you have 3 options for LF, 3 for CF, 3 for RF, 3 for 2B, 2 for leadoff, etc. Unfortunately, instead of Hairston replacing Macias as supersub, I'm sure Cedeno will go down to AAA. Hopefully, the Cubs will cut Remlinger when Williamson and Wood return. Who knows, maybe they can get a little something (very little) for him when he goes on waivers. After Mitre's performance today, I'm betting he's returned to Iowa.
  11. The way Holla has been swinging a bat, he'll be sitting behind Jerome Walton.
  12. Mazzone didn't turn around Juan Cruz. I don't see Farnsworth as a closer.
  13. If they trade Walker without getting Soriano, do the Cubs rotate Nomar, Neifi, and Ronny at SS/2B? I could live with that if we get some help elsewhere.
  14. Or maybe he just wants to give Gerut some ABs.
  15. I predict Rich Hill will have a longer and more accomplished career as a starter than Andy Sisco. The Royals have greatly hindered his develpment as a starter.
  16. I'm very optimistic that he'll be a good #3-#5 starter for the Cubs long term. He has spent the past three years getting his walk rate way down, which he has done. During yesterday's broadcast, it was mentioned that he is working on a third and possibly a fourth pitch. If he develops a change, a cutter, or both, the fact that he tops out at 90 won't be a big problem.
  17. Isn't Soriano's defense pretty bad at 2B? Wouldn't he be pretty awful in left? I'd think it's a little easier to play LF than 2B. I suppose so, but Steve Stone was on the Score earlier and was basically saying Soriano would never move to LF. I really don't see us dealing for him. If the Cubs traded for Soriano, they would play him at 2B, not LF.
  18. Remember, they're the Mets. They can overcome any amount of talent to lose in the end!
  19. Dunn? please do it JH!!! I've gotten my hopes up about Manny, and that MAYBE over now as it appears he might be headed to the Mets, I just pray to Kent that we get Adam. I would rather have Soriano and Murton in the lineup than Dunn and Walker. Both Cincy and Texas need help in the back of their rotations that the Cubs can provide with pitchers such as Mitre, Wellemeyer, and Nolasco.
  20. Get Kerry to have surgery in the offseason. Give him one more season to establish himself as a starter. If that doesn't work, then trade him to a team that needs a closer.
  21. The trade that gave the Marlins Willis led to the trade that gave us DLee. Hendry has a good working relationship with Detroit, Oakland, and Florida because they are willing to trade talent to get talent, unlike Cincy or Tampa Bay.
  22. Could be a trade that stands on its own in Hendry's mind. Hendry is a compulsive optimizer with no improvement too small to make. Remember the Darren Lewis / Chad Hermansen trade?
  23. The trade makes sense to me. Fits a pattern ... Murton, Moore, Hairston, Gerut. Hendry is tacitly admitting that this team needs players who know how to draw a walk.
  24. Jon Mueller, the Cubs' 16th round pick, has decided to return to school. http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2005/07/15/sports/00lead.txt
