  1. I'll put it like this so its easier to understand. With every top FA the Cubs have signed going back until Jon Lester, every single one of them have had a "but." The Cubs liked all of the SS, "but" they weren't paying for a Turner. The Cubs liked Darvish, "but" they weren't going to come close to his initial ask and ended up paying him well short of what top pitchers were getting. The Cubs liked Heyward, "but" they didn't even offer him the most money and he chose to join the Cubs because he didn't have to be "the guy".... so he chose the Cubs because he's a coward? There's no but with Jon Lester. He was Theo's guy. They wen't out and had to convince him they weren't messing around and were going to win before they even believed that themselves and paid $20M more than the market.
  2. Sure. But that offseason was completely different. Darvish was the big fish projected to sign a deal way larger than what he got. That was back when even the Dodgers were worried about the luxury tax. Darvish didn't sign til just before Spring Training and was only the second player to receive more than a 3 year contract. No one was spending that year.
  3. Darvish's market fell to where the Cubs could actually afford him.
  4. Not even going to argue Dansby. He was the last of the 4 heads remaining and the Cubs were just about the last of his market. It's worked out on paper, so yay. Although I would argue you would hope for a better bat for that kind of money. Yu Darvish was kind of a similar situation. Jason Heyward took less money to come to the Cubs. I would say Jon Lester is the last true "this is our guy and he's going to be a member of the Cubs." I believe the rumors surrounding other offers for Lester came in $20M under the Cubs offer.
  5. At this point, any connection made to the Cubs and a top tier FA should be taken as nothing more than a reporter with no knowledge of the situation using logic that a large market should be in that pot, or an agent exaggerating the interest to up the other offers on the table. This organization is as passive as it gets. So going out there and "getting their guy" doesn't exist. It's simply how far down the list do they have to go before the player is on his last resort.
  6. No. I dont think I will. Quickly running out of players that anyone can realistically expect this organization to target that would earn that much beyond a 1 year deal.
  7. Who's next on the "Price Is Wrong" for the Cubs?
  8. I'll be working New Years day and wont be making a few million dollars like Boras. It's just a day that is the marker for the first time you screwed up and signed something 2025.
  9. Just in case he doesnt sign with the Cubs, does every one have their "I never really like him that much and the Cubs are lucky they didn't spend that much" posts locked and loaded ready to fire?
  10. Even the White Sox would end up paying him at least 7x as much as he would make in Japan.
  11. Rendon is pretty vocal about how little he cares about actually playing baseball. Even as a minor league signing, I want no part of him.
  12. Feels more like people are just trying to twist and bend the narratives to make it fit for the Cubs and convince themselves he's coming to Chicago. He might and the prices may indeed be falling, but at the same time, it's hard for me to believe that when a team like the Yankees were in and then all of a sudden dead in the water.
  13. No he didn't. Half of his deal was deferred til 2035-2046.
  14. I never bought into that "he probably wants to get this done before Christmas/New Years." We are talking about a $150M contract here. I think you can give up 1 year of holidays that your agent is mostly handling anyways.
  15. And? What does that have to do with the point trying to be made that Hoyer can't afford a Kyle Tucker? The Rangers got virtually nothing out of the first 2 years of deGrom and Corey Seager has missed about 30% of their games since '23.
  16. His allowance goes up to the tune of ~$244M. There is more than enough room to fit in a Kyle Tucker sized contract in there. The Texas Rangers are 3 years removed from winning the WS on a $241M payroll with deGrom counting for $38M, Seager counting for $32M, and Semien counting $25M. The Cubs' most expensive player starts with Semien.
  17. They can still have him. They dont want him.
  18. Someone made a comment a couple weeks ago and said these big long term signings are more a question of timing rather than ability. The Cubs have a core of PCA, Busch, and Shaw in their pre-arb years and it seems like they are going to give a large amount of playing time to another one as a DH with either Caissie or Ballesteros. They have one player locked into a contract that pays them nine figures. Their starting 2B, LF, and RF are in the last years of their deal. They've got 2 more years of Justin Steele and developed Cade Horton to be a really good pitcher. If now is not the time to capitalize on these young players making pennies on the dollar and throw some long term money at really good players, then when the hell is the right time?
  19. Kris Bryant was absolutely a star. It's just a shame hes built with senior citizen parts.
  20. The Dodgers are the exact opposite of World Series or bust, imo. They've already got theirs and have built a roster that is going to be vying for that on a yearly basis. So while coming up short is a disappointment for them, it's simply "next year." The Cubs flipped the script and traded multiple long term assets for a 1 year rental. So unlike the Dodgers, the Cubs are trying to figure out how to build the team back up to get back to the playoffs. You say one game from the NLCS wasn't the ultimate goal. Then what was? Was the ultimate goal building for a 1 year run at a championship? Well, they failed. I'm not sure how you say that's a success unless of course you are grading on the Cubs curve.
  21. Bunch of yes votes because the Cubs have done a masterful job of conditioning the fan base to limit expectations. It seems all that is needed to appease the fanbase and turn down the heat is to sell out for a year and play a couple games in October. Ignore the fact that everything you did in that year doesn't help the team moving forward and ultimately failed to achieve the entire point of selling out for a single year, just appreciate the playoff badge on the shirt sleeve. It's brilliant sleight of hand.
  22. Put Hoyer on the first flight to Mars if the answer to losing Kyle Tucker is a bunch of fodder bullpen signings, failed MLB bats from Japan, and Gallen.
  23. Ya. And it wasn't successful. Went all in on 1 year of Tucker, sat on a boat load of cash, used the prices at the deadline as an excuse to not get what you said you needed in the off-season to put the team over the top, lost the division to the Brewers, lost in the playoffs to the Brewers. So, the Cubs lost 3 long term assets, didn't fully commit to the 1 year they had of their superstar, and lost everything to the team with $80M less payroll. Fans were laughing that the Brewers then got swept by the Dodgers because they held up a "L" flag. That's the bar for success.
  24. The Cubs have only given Ohtani at least an 8 year offer, if that tells you anything about how convinced they need to be.
  25. Just going back to 2000, division titles: Cardinals - 12 Brewers - 6 Cubs - 6 Cincinnati - 2 We can sit here and act like the Cubs were great last year and just throw it up to a one off year from the Brewers being the best and tip your cap. Or we can realize the bar is set so damn low for a team that should be dominating this division on a regular basis, that it's ridiculous we are looking at 1 playoff appearance and 1 more year before going into another rebuild with a core of pre-arb players.
