Cowles was terrible last year as a 25 year old in AAA. His value is low right now, not worth worrying about a 40-man slot for. If he stays in the org that's cool but can be replaced.

It's a small win for Gallen compared to the QO. I read that 14m is deferred so that would help him on taxes i assume.

If the Cubs see him as a DH only there's no way IMO they refuse to trade him like they have. Huge difference in value for him as a C than DH obviously.

Nifty idea. Mo could catch Boyd given how well he holds runners. I assume they also want to break in Mo for next season since Kelly will be gone. Amaya/Mo next year at catcher?

Gallen has a QO attached. Could he even get a 1/22m deal at this point? Or at any point? He probably should have just taken the QO because he likely wants that 1-year opt-out anyways. Besides Shota he's the weakest of the FA SP this year who had a QO. He or his agent effed up. If he wants any kind of longterm deal he might have to accept a contract similar or worse than what Taillon got, who didn't have a QO attached. Would Cubs even be in on that? Bregman didn't have a QO so it's a big cost for Gallen with the QO.

Yeah most likely right, unless some deal falls into their lap they can't pass up. LT payroll is at 265m so hard to see Tom wanting to keep pushing

Edmonds was amazing, he could catch anything he got to, i'm not sure of his overall range though due to not amazing footspeed. PCA obviously has him beat there. Andruw Jones was so natural and smooth and perfect body control. Best OF catch ever is IMO the Gary Matthews Jr HR robbery in Texas, followed by Jim Edmonds' backwards-catching the ball over his head in a full dive

That's a really good point. And having a TORP is even more important in the playoffs so the timing of Steele's return works fine for us. However, we also don't know exactly how effective/rusty he'll be this year and he might be on a bit of a leash with pitch counts.

Looks like some injury reports are starting to be announced around the league as pitchers/ catchers report. Hopefully the Cubs do ok like last year.

Very hard for me to see a world where Taillon does better than Gallen, unless something weird/unlucky happens. Can't see any reason he doesn't bounce back well.

Do you guys think teams take recent footage of opposing. pitchers from upcoming teams they'll face and run software to analyze for pitch tipping? I bet they do...

Cumulative hitting stats all have this flaw, and yes it can apply to everyone. Virtually guaranteed every team FO also uses some rate stat like "WAR per 600 PAs".

I think Duran and Paredes are pretty equal as players, but the extra year of control for Duran I'd think the Astros would need to throw someone else in. Aren't the Astros wanting to trade Paredes because of salary? They might want someone pre-arb. I like Duran but on the Cubs he might need to be in LF so not sure what he'd do on the team this year, unless he's DH. Can the arm play in RF? Lefty bat, he's an upgrade over Mo at DH one assumes and keeps Mo in Iowa for defensive work.. Shaw for Duran seems even-ish to me but I might rather have Shaw with the 2 extra years, i think he'll hit. Duran bats leadoff thus gets tons more of PAs yearly so his WAR has been a bit inflated.

I honestly don't know. You seem pretty confident. I just don't know how to predict these things at all. They seem pretty random to me, and the exceptions are not the general trend. But there may be players more or less likely to age better than others, and that's what Hoyer seems to be making a bet on, but it's still a matter of probability and not certainty, so we just have to see. Hoyer is far smarter than any of us here combined and his success rate with significant signings has been astonishingly good, which gives me some comfort he knows what he's doing here.

Ultimately, Mo only has 1 tool that's above-average. It's a good tool, and probably the one you'd most want a player to have, but I still agree his paths to success are obviously limited. Average power, can't run, probably moves and throws below-average behind the plate. He'd better work really hard to become a good framer if he wants to stick at catcher. Kirk did it. Mo could spend 3 more full seasons in iowa catching and improve but it's still hard to see him moving or throwing at an average MLB ability. Some people are just bootyliscious.

Yeah exactly, I'm not really worried about it. He's like a fish that can't help taking a bite at something shiny, but he is very talented and is left-handed so I think he'll probably be ok. VS LHP he might be hopeless.
