  1. The more I think about Alonso the more I really wonder what the Mets get for him. If they don’t trade him and then he leaves via FA, the Mets get a 4th round supplemental pick. 4th round. So in theory any offer better than that is something they should consider. Cubs got PCA for Baez and Trevor Williams. But PCA was coming off of arm surgery and hasn’t played in a year. And if the Cubs didn’t trade him they would have gotten a second round supplemental pick. PCA wasn’t the prospect he is today at that time. Granted, it was also an overpay. So that said, what does Pete cost. No way Cassie or Ballesteros. If that is their ask then you look elsewhere. If it is Canario, sure, you consider it. Maybe even add a lower leveL guy. It would make for some mixing and matching of other players, but in doing that it would strengthen the bench. As long as he doesn’t cost a lot, I would be ok with him. But, IMO, the Mets will find a team willing to part with more than the Cubs would part with.
  2. You asked how it looks now. And now, it looks like the right move not to have made that trade. Doesn’t matter what fans thought the Cubs would do or what they would spend. Obviously anyone who thought they would blow past the LT line was wrong. As for Imanaga, you are right, the Cubs haven’t committed to the 4 years yet. But they can. It is their option. So regardless of what fans thought the FO would do, it is pretty apparent that wasn’t their plan, unless against all odds, they got Ohtani. For him they would have stretched. Also, with him, Glasnow made more sense. Glasgow this year, he leaves and Ohtani takes his spot in the rotation. Once that failed they went back to spending under the LT. Which bring us right back to they are better off without that deal they they would have been with it.
  3. Hey, even though you say j/k, you did make me think about this again. So you asked how it is going with the Cubs and their decision not to beat the Dodgers offer for Glasnow. So based on what the Dodgers gave up that would mean the Cubs would have probably had to give up Brown and maybe Triantos. They would have gotten Glasnow and Margot. Of course with those salaries, most likely they then don’t get Imanaga or Bellinger. And they lose Brown. So let me throw this question back at you. Would you rather have one year of Glasnow and Margot or 4 years of Imanaga, 6 years of Brown, 1 year of Bellinger and still have Triantos in the system? If you would rather have what they have on the team by not trading for Glasnow, that should tell you how that prognostication looks.
  4. They need another starter because those guys haven’t pitched anywhere near the innings they will end up needing to pitch if they Cubs make the playoffs. I wouldn’t deal any of them, and the pitcher doesn’t have to be Luzardo or cost that kind of price. But they should look for another depth starter.
  5. I know that. But do you give up what the Dodgers did for 1 year of Glasnow, coming off an injury year. Also a guy who never pitched 130 innings in a year. Again. No I wouldn’t and the Cubs shouldn’t have. You can’t factor in what the Dodgers can do when comparing their moves to any other teams. I doubt the Dodgers give that much up unless they knew they would sign him. And that was never going to be a thing with the cubs.
  6. Looks fine. Let me ask you this? Would the Cubs have extended him for what the Dodgers did? The answer is no. So why would they give up what the Dodgers gave up. Regardless of how good he does, it would have been this year only. So, I stand by what I said. The Cubs FO should not have given up much for one year of Glasnow at a salary of $27M. And 10 starts doesn’t make a 5 year contract. Let him pitch 180-200 for a few years before complaining about him being someone we missed out on.
  7. Him I know. I don’t know a Lazardo. Guess you missed the sarcasm. My bad. Kind of a think with biitner, who I responded too. All good.
  8. I’d they got him, of course I would root for him and be excited about the possibility of him going on a homer binge. But, tbh, I wouldn’t give up much for him and I am not really sure he helps much. And I definitely wouldn’t want to extend him for long years.
  9. Not sure about the guys you added, but I agree with you about Alonso. IMO he isn’t worth the probable cost to get him and doesn’t improve the team much, if at all. Maybe if he can be had for a guy in the 20-30 range of prospects he works. But my guess is the Mets will get more than I would want them to give up.
  10. Maybe a pen arm? MAYBE Jimenez? But not much there. Hard to get anything for Eloy, because he is always hurt. How about B. Davis for Eloy? Would the Cubs do that? Does Eloy(if healthy) help the offense? Our often injured prospect for their often injured major league player.
  11. Yes, they can start playing well anytime now. That would be nice.
  12. They just have to play to what is expected of them offensively. Yes, the pen needs to get sorted out. I agree with that. But I do think people have overreacted to the teams offensive struggles. And I know right now they have been very bad. But, IMO they will be fine. Catcher is a concern, but other than that, they are solid all around the field.
  13. When Wicks comes back Brown might end up in the pen as well. So that helps too.
  14. You keep referencing 10 games out of the division. They are not that far out now. And they are tied for the WC spot. You add to this team if you can get in the playoffs. So if they are playing 500 ball and in the race for WC, IMO they should add. And, honestly, if they are playing 500 ball I don’t expect them to be more than 5 or 6 games back if the Brewers either. Even though that really doesn’t matter. They just need to get in. I am not suggesting a top prospect for a rental. But they can use some of their excess minor league talent to bring in people who can help this year. They have plenty.
  15. What are you talking about? There isn’t a play in game. Winning the division with the 3rd best record is no different than making the WC. You still have to play an extra series.
  16. This is an interesting take after 50 games this year. Especially when Suzuki missed 20 games and Happ is historically a streaky hitter. I believe the Cubs corners were top 5 in baseball last year. At the very worse, top 10. But now, suddenly they are a mess? I strongly disagree. They may not be top 5, but they might be. And again, they are far from a mess.
  17. Oh, boo hoo😬. You think that is old? I just got a text today from a grade school buddy of mine talking about our 50th year reunion for our graduating class. 😥 Now, that is old. Am I right biitner and thawv? Anyone else? I consider you young. I appreciate you and guys of your age talking here. It makes me view baseball differently than most of the guys I talk baseball with. Which then sometimes frustrates me when they make statements, based on old counting numbers, on if a guy is good or not. But that is ok. I can listen to them and try to educate them, but usually it falls on deaf errors (literally….. we are old so hearing goes).
  18. Personally I like the idea of Scott better than Hader. He will cost less. And Scott, now, works for me too. I doubt the Astros are trading Hader anyway. Caratini would be fine, however. And, again, the sooner the better.
  19. We are in the same page here. I agree they wait. I also believe they will play better. The pen will need tinkering, but that will happen as guys get healthy. Wicks, Palencia, and K. Thompson all soon. So maybe there is a shake up in the pen. I just don’t see this as gloom and doom as many game day posters do. After playing terrible baseball and underachieving greatly for a month now, the Cubs are 1/2 game out of a playoff spot. People realistically looking at the Cubs at the start of the season had them at mid 80’s to maybe high 80’s in wins. I think the team they have still should have that expectation. So, as you said, wait. And also, step away from the edge. I do have a concern at catcher. And, TBH, it is more defensively than offensively. I think Amaya will hit a little. I think he can hit .230-.240. And that would be fine. But they can’t throw anyone out. That, along with blocking balls and pitch framing concerns me more than the offense. Maybe, that needs to be addressed, closer to the deadline.
  20. I agree. And I would add, IMO, the sky is not falling. It is not unreasonable to think this very team can start winning again. Guys that have been playing poorly can get back in track to their usual numbers and at the end of this month the Cubs can very easily be a team over .500 and very much be in the race. IMO all this team needs is to play to the level expected of the guys they have. Yes, they can use a catcher. And also a closer. But you are not getting either now. Just start playing better ball, as they are very capable of, and then as it gets closer to the ASB see about add ons. I suppose an innings eating SP wouldn’t hurt either. I like the young guys they have but they do need to limit some innings. So maybe someone who can pitch in the rotation for a bit. They would also help the pen because a young guy who is starting would move to the pen. So as you said, for now, nothing should be done. Just turn it around with what they have then add a catcher, closer and another starting pitcher at the deadline. If they also add a bat, that is fine, but IMO that would only be a bench guy.
  21. Isn’t he 31 or 32 years old? Not exactly someone to get excited about.
  22. Hope so. After a slump he has done pretty well.
