    I feel disagreeing with the notion that Ohtani was going to go to LA all the while is just something people can do so that people can continue to complain about Jed and the Cubs FC/ownership. It was pretty apparent that was what Ohtani was going to do from the start. And when you add in the great deal he gave them allowing them to pay him later, it is almost impossible not to acknowledge that was the team all along. There are a lot of things to complain about when it comes to Jed, the FO and ownership, but not getting Ohtani is not one of them. And as far as that goes, I don’t give them credit for trying either. It is easy to say they were in on Ohtani and they made a competitive offer, and it is easy to actually have made a competitive offer, if you know he will never take it anyway. And it was never going to happen.

    This is one way to look at it. But another is what do people expect the fan base to do to show they are not giving the FO and ownership a pass? Who says people just let it go. I see a lot of people complaining about it here. Seems much of the fan base complains about it. I don’t think anyone just gives it a pass. I just don’t think the FO cares what the fan base wants. The choices of the fan base are to either stop watching them on tv, don’t buy the marquee app, stop going to the games all together or complain but support the team. Many fans choose to complain and support. Doesn’t mean they are giving the FO a pass and being okay with what is happening.

    This isn’t a thing. No front office will ever look at their team who makes the playoffs as a team that cannot advance. However, I do understand your point. They aren’t as good as the top teams, and no trade or trades are going to change that. But if a FO went about their business this way, every team except the Phillies, Dodger and Braves would be selling in the NL. They may still sell at some point. But IMO that would only happen if they were 3-4 games out of the WC spot and most definitely closer to the deadline. As a fan of the team I do understand your comment. And most likely at the end of the year, with hindsight of what happened you will be able to come back here and say “I told you they should sell because there was no way they could beat the Dodgers/Braves/Phillies”. Just like people did last year when they fell a game short. But you know a team whose fan base didn’t say that last year?The Dbacks. The year before, the Phillies. Perry much every year you can find a team who is not as talented as the top team in the league beating that team.

    I agree with you. As I said, there is no reason they shouldn’t get him, but they won’t. As Cuzi said, the mindset of how this organization is run is ass backwards. He is only too pricey because if that mindset. If they acted as a large market team his price would not be an issue.

    I agree we shouldn’t have any hope for Soto. But that is a reflection of the mind set of the FO and ownership. Really if Bellinger leaves there is no reason, other than the organization not willing to give out a 10+ year deal, for the Cubs not to be the best offer. They can sign him, a couple pen arms and upgrade at catcher and probably still be under the LT. And, frankly, that sucks. Because Aoto would be that superstar everyone always wants the Cubs to have. And with him and a decent hitting catcher that would help the offense immensely.

    TBH, yes Martinez would be the better option to me. But why are the Mets selling. The idea of “Cubs should get Alonso” or in this case, Martinez just seems crazy to me. Not because they won’t help, but because why would the Mets be trading either, especially now. I know you just suggested Martinez instead of Alonso, but I didn’t want to quote two posts, so I am answering you. Mainly because if the Mets were selling, I agree with you. I would go after Martinez. I have no interest in Alonso as a rental for his cost. And they aren’t going to extend him, and I wouldn’t want to anyway.

    If Bellinger opts out there is absolutely no reason not to be the highest bidder on Soto. They have the money. Then sign Jansen and maybe a couple pen arms. They don’t really need to spend on starting pitching so put it all on Soto. They won’t get him, I know that. But my comment is there really isn’t an excuse not too.

    I am not sure I would like the idea of a starter taking over in the 3rd or 4th inning with the thought of finishing the game. Wouldn’t that put the 8th and 9th inning into the dreaded category of facing guys for a 3rd time. Don’t even the best starters struggle with that? I know you are arguing for the idea, I am just adding into what you already said.

    He actually looks a lot better than Gomes. Both with the bat and defensively. That said, he is still not very good. To be a guy with a wRC+ of 77 and be 60 pts better than who you are replacing does show how bad that guy is rather than you actually being good. But it is much better. And he is definitely better in all phases defensively.

    The issue with your idea of Alonso is you suggest a team needs a superstar player and then use him as an example. He is not a superstar player. He hit homers. He is good at that. But that is it. And he is someone who very well will not age well and who already turned down a deal I wouldn’t want the Cubs to make for him. So he would be a rental. On top of that, the Cubs would have to lose someone to get him. Probably a decent prospect. And if we want to go further with the problems of bringing Alonso in, you can add the fact that Busch is actually outplaying him now. Sure, yiu can make a case for Alonso most likely is a better player, but you are replacing a spot you really don’t need to replace. And then one final issue with all of this Alonso talk is why are the Mets going to trade him. They are as much in the race as 8 other teams. I didn’t want him in the off season and don’t see how it is even a possibility to get him now.

    I just don’t understand all the people who constantly cut Happ down. Not counting pitchers his war is second on the team. And the guy above him, Busch, many have suggested should be in the minors or replaced by an overpriced slugger. Just don’t understand the fan base.

    I am starting Hicks on my fantasy team. The last time the Cubs faced one of my pitchers was the last time they actually did anything in the first few innings of a game, when they chased Montas after 2 innings. So I do expect them to come out fast tonight. And You're welcome.

    Why? Which of the 9 teams battling for 2 WC spots is going to run away with it? Why wouldn’t the Cubs have a similar chance as any of the teams, all around the same record, to play well from now until the trade deadline. Or, maybe all continue to play around .500. I know people can point to all the problems with the Cubs. But since there are so many teams in a similar spot, doesn’t it stand to reason those teams have issues too? Besides that, who is selling now? I can see the Marlins, Rockies, A’s, Angels and white sox. That is it. So right now prices would be very high. Maybe you are right, the Cubs will be pushing up daisies by the deadline, if they wait. But if that’s the case, they would sell. And more likely than your scenerio is they will be in a similar spot at the deadline, as they are now. Maybe at that time there will be more sellers so prices will be lower and more players will be available. Sure, I would love to make moves now, but it takes two teams to make a deal. And I don’t see why any of the 5 teams that are obvious sellers would be in a hurry to make a deal unless it was way lopsided in their favor. And, IMO, the Cubs or any of the teams fighting for WC spots, are not in a position to make a lopsided trade to add a guy now. My guess is nothing happens anytime soon.

    I don’t get it either. Busch needs to play. I guess if Tauchman were in right and Suzuki was the DH, the argument could be he wants a better OF defense. But he is using Tauchman as the DH. Doesn’t make sense.

    Pretty sure the Cubs know about Edward. Palencia and Cuas have been up. So that leaves Roberts, who has walked 6 guys in 9 innings. He has pitched 9 innings in the last 2 years. What makes you think he will be any better than what they have? And also, don’t you think it the Cubs knew he would be better, he would be up? Making all sorts of 40 man roster moves, releasing guys. Wanting guys down and still end up with the same type of reliever is just bit progress to me. They need a closer. Period. And right now none are available. That said, maybe they do send Little down and bring someone up. I don’t expect that to matter much, if at all.

    The trouble with this idea is that none of the pen arms your mentioning in the minors is any better than the middle relief pitching they currently have on the team. So cut Mastrobuoni and then bring up Edwards. So send down Little? Does that really matter? You are replacing one iffy middle relief pitcher with another one. The cubs don’t need random pen arms. They have enough of them. They need a closer, period. Then everyone moves down a spot. Kind of what the Dbacks did with Sewald last year. Brought him in and everyone moved down.

    So only buy when you are a team that wins 100 games. Otherwise sell. Great idea. No sense being a team who wins 84-90 games. Those teams never make it to the WS! Right?????

    Hard to get a guy out when he yiu have to get to strike 5 on him. Ump missed 2 strikes to a guy and then he got a hit. I have had enough of home plate umpires.

    Honestly, what would you expect them to do? Look at what other teams in their spot have done. They aren’t going to give away higher end prospects for rentals, and they shouldn’t. There is nothing they can do to make them into a team that will challenge the Dodgers, Braves or Phillies for wins. So there isn’t a reason to deplete the farm to add guys to try catching those teams. A team that might catch the Brewers or at the very least is a wild card team is the best they can do. So why isn’t making smaller moves to improve the team such a bad idea. Seemed to work for the last 3 teams who went to the WS in the NL.
