Agree with this completely. Jed's "smart" spending is fine most of the time. But at some point, you have to cross that line to get a true superstar. Almost all deals regarding a superstar will feel like an overpay at the time. Cubs fans have been begging for that cornerstone player for some time now. -

It was Eppler who Scherzer spoke with. It’s already been pretty much debunked that it was a ploy to get Scherzer to accept the trade.

The Rays do a great job in trades. However, they’ve also lost their fair share as well. There’s definitely a chance they turn Assad/Wes into something.

There’s just a lot of “noise” out there. It goes from Bichette/Vladdy being possibly moved to them now looking to trade for Soto. I’m not really buying it, especially since the Yankees have been hot and heavy after Soto. Honestly, if your team isn’t named the Dodgers, you probably shouldn’t feel great for Ohtani.

I think they are a lock to land one. My guess is Yamamoto.

Just look at the Cubs as the example where it makes sense. The Cubs need a TORP and have plenty of young pitching depth. Thompson and Wesneski are the names that most think would be involved. It would give the Rays salary relief plus a cost controlled young SP that they can work their magic on. The Cubs trade from their depth and fill the need at the top of their rotation.

I’ll add one last thing. IMO it’s best practice to lock up the available superstar now if your team is in the market, because future FA’s aren’t a guarantee vs waiting and trying to get one the following year. Remember when the plan was to sign one of Devers/Machado? It’s much easier to build around the superstar than hoping for one to come available and ultimately sign with your team.

Your scenarios are just not logical. I can promise you Ohtani will not be the only move they make if they land him. If they aren’t willing to spend on other big FAs, they would be extremely active in the trade market to land cost controlled guys. You’re worrying about a scenario that isn’t going to happen. Like I said, this isn’t only about next season. Year 2 of Ohtani you get his arm, which is like landing a top SP FA in 2025 (I understand if there is hesitation on how he well he’ll pitch post surgery).

I hate to break it to you, but if the Cubs are only spending $50m towards next years salary cap, spreading that out over multiple players isn’t moving the needle. If my choice is Ohtani or two players for that $50m, give me Ohtani. You’re missing one large elephant in the room - Ohtani will be in the starting rotation year 2. This isn’t just about next year….

Or you lock up the once in a lifetime player and you continue to add pieces over his tenure. It’s much easier to build around a superstar. If they pass on Ohtani because they feel they aren’t WS ready, then everyone in the front office should be let go.

Steele is not being moved. It’s a waste of time discussing it. Even in the scenario he regresses to a #3, he’s controlled for 4 more years through his prime. The Cubs need to add another SP to the top of the rotation, not trade away one that they have control of for 4 years. There’s other ways to get bats that don’t include trading away your most valuable asset.
