Your scenarios are just not logical. I can promise you Ohtani will not be the only move they make if they land him. If they aren’t willing to spend on other big FAs, they would be extremely active in the trade market to land cost controlled guys. You’re worrying about a scenario that isn’t going to happen. Like I said, this isn’t only about next season. Year 2 of Ohtani you get his arm, which is like landing a top SP FA in 2025 (I understand if there is hesitation on how he well he’ll pitch post surgery).

I hate to break it to you, but if the Cubs are only spending $50m towards next years salary cap, spreading that out over multiple players isn’t moving the needle. If my choice is Ohtani or two players for that $50m, give me Ohtani. You’re missing one large elephant in the room - Ohtani will be in the starting rotation year 2. This isn’t just about next year….

Or you lock up the once in a lifetime player and you continue to add pieces over his tenure. It’s much easier to build around a superstar. If they pass on Ohtani because they feel they aren’t WS ready, then everyone in the front office should be let go.

Steele is not being moved. It’s a waste of time discussing it. Even in the scenario he regresses to a #3, he’s controlled for 4 more years through his prime. The Cubs need to add another SP to the top of the rotation, not trade away one that they have control of for 4 years. There’s other ways to get bats that don’t include trading away your most valuable asset.

I think everyone here would love to have Morel as the cornerstone 3b. The reason most are doubtful is that the Cubs are reluctant to commit to him there. There is a reason for that. In a season where 3b was wide open, they played a career 2b with no arm at 3b over him. Just think how easy it would be for the Cubs to come out and say “Morel is our guy at 3b moving forwards”. They haven’t and there’s continued talk of them trying to find him a position, with no mention of that being 3b. The writing is on the wall for me anyways.

I think this is the best approach as a fan. It’s an exciting off-season for us no doubt, but the scenarios I’ve seen thrown around on here (I won’t even mention the craziness on Twitter and other places), I think there’s a good chance for a fanbase meltdown when we actually see the end results. I’ve seen posts saying they would be upset with a Soto trade. The expectations have went through the roof and some of these trade scenarios don’t have enough “hurt” from our side. No pressure Jed…

On a slow day of work I'm trying to make sense of this from the Blue Jays side if we live in a world where this is remotely true. Outside the box here - what would you guys feel like with a Hoerner for Bichette swap? From the Cubs side, we get our 3b bat that we've been desperately looking for and it would find a home for Morel at 2b. IF defense would take a large step back but IF offense would take a step forwards. From the Jays perspective, they get an extra year of control with Hoerner at the same price as Bichette + upgrades their defense at SS by a lot. I just don't see this being true without the Jays getting an impact MLBer back and I can't handle a world where we are trading our best cost controlled SP.

It's exciting if the Cubs are truly inquiring about trades of this magnitude. I have a hard time believing it from the Blue Jays perspective however. I understand they would get an absolute haul, but they're currently in their window of competing. They have their top 4 SP locked up and still multiple years of their young position core. I could maybe understand it if they had a sure fire SS replacement waiting in the wings, but that's not the case either. Barger is not that guy.

Giants are my bet. Lots of money to spend, tried to make a big splash last year, west coast, etc. You can ask any Cardinals fan - their ownership loves to have their name out there for optics for all these high profile players. I just don’t see them being the team to land the most sought after FA SP. Honestly a failure on their part by not building a competitive staff to go with Goldy and Arenado’s last few years of their prime. They have about 4 guys who need to be a DH and have refused to trade from their depth to add a cost controlled SP. -

I don’t see the Cardinals going toe to toe with the big dogs for Yamamoto. Even if they surprise everyone and sign Yamamoto, they still would have a horrible rotation. -

My lowly opinion - I refresh this page and the venture to the minor league forum occasionally. I came here to refresh specifically to see what you guys were saying on Nola. And if there wasn’t a thread, I would have went elsewhere (Reddit, etc) to read the discussion.

That would be poor management if they use extending Hendricks on a cheaper AAV contract as justification for not going after a TOR. Especially knowing Stroman is only on the books for one year. This year has showed us teams need a plethora of SP, with injuries being at an all time high. They can do it by FA or via a trade, but adding a TORP is a must this off-season imo.

They absolutely need a TOR, I don’t think there’s any question about that.

It’s hard to say how long he was pitching with a capsular injury. I think we can chalk 2022 up to that the very least. I also think Hendricks saying he feels the best he has in a long time and his velo being up in 2023 tells part of the story.
