  1. Who unfortunately for most of this board is just as overrated. not really... at least they haven't lost a game yet, and they did beat the crap out of an arkansas team which has proven to be a very good team. On the road, Wazzu never really came close on their final drive, and as they are showing today against Oregon, they're a decent team. Washington only got to the 35 yard line, and Arizona State did nothing after USC took the lead. So yes, they've had some narrow margins of victory, but in none of those games was there a really serious chance for them to lose in the end. Contrast that against Notre Dame. They got crushed by Michigan. That might only be their only loss, but they would've lost against Michigan State if the Spartans hadn't given the game away. And then today, they had to score in the last minute to win. That's 3 games that have been more dangerous for them than anything USC has played. USC beat an Arkansas team without McFadden. Give them credit, they kept on the accelerator and made it a laugher. But without McFadden (a beast) and with Jones having the worst game of his career (3 fumbles? He had 1 last year), it wasn't a representation of what Arkansas really is. The Hogs have gotten their star tailback back, changed QBs, and gotten healthier in general since, and the result has been 120-20 in the last three games. As for what I want to see? I don't care about teams being overrated or whatever. I want to see Arkansas do as well as possible, obviously. I also want to see either WV or Louisville, Boise St, USC, one of Mich/OSU, and Rutgers all go undefeated and see how the BCS tries to handle that debacle. It's going to take an outright clusterintercourse of a season to force wholesale change. As an SEC fan, I largely believe that it is, bottom to top, the best conference in the country. I think the Big 12 is right there, perhaps a bit better in the middle and worse at the bottom. Pac 10? I think it's too weak at the bottom, though the top is very strong. I look at it as the basketball ACC of college football.
  2. I know I said it before, but McFadden and Jones are beasts.
  3. By this logic, the sun is arguably hot.
  4. What floors me about that Opt/Pes breakdown is that he allows the exact same number of HR, the walks are three higher with the optimistic performance and yet the ERA is nearly half. Of course, the nearly doubled K numbers probably have much to do with that. You seem to have overlooked the 57 innings pitched difference.
  5. They booed Santa Clause, that's all you need to know It wasn't that great of a movie, to be fair.
  6. Clearly, you're a Cano fan, as this is the third post I've seen from you in the last five minutes promoting acquiring him. Let me ask you this, then; what possible reason would the Yankees have for trading Cano? Moreover, what could the Cubs offer that would justify the trade in the Yankees' eyes? I like Cano, but his absolute refusal to walk does concern me, and he's not likely to hit .342 every year, so when he has a more normal batting average, his OBP would be closer to his pedestrian .342 career number. He's probably not worth what it would take to get him, given his age, his popularity, and his production to cost ratio.
  7. I would just like to point out that, with this statement, you have just left yourself wide open for an inordinate amount of good-natured fun-poking. And with that statement, you've set yourself up for a lot of jokes.
  8. I've been following him pretty closely myself, and he doesn't appear to be any more or less streaky than other players. He was actually remarkably consistent two years ago, but he struggled to get in rhythm this year, it seemed.
  9. I like every word of that, especially the part about Soriano in CF. Prepare to be bombarded by the "Soriano is overrated and sucks" faction. Last year the guy was a bum who didn't get on enough and was going to stink now that he's not in a hitters park and low and behold...40/40. Seriously, what is your problem with posters on this board? Soriano is overrated. But he's still good. Most everybody on this board would be happy with him being here next year, especially when you consider the limited options. And, if he's in CF, all the better. If I recall correctly you were one of the guys saying Soriano sucks last year. A year ago people were saying you can't trade (name a worthless pitching prospect who we've waited for to pan out and still hasn't) for established players who's OBP is below .375 and people were lambasted at the suggestion. And for the record you're usually the only poster I tend to disagree because of your "I'm always right" attitude. a) an attitude is a really stupid reason to disagree with the content of a statement. b) You're mistaking "Soriano sucks" with "Soriano isn't likely worth the cost in players and contract that will be required to acquire his production, and he's been slipping for several years, and this team already has an abundance of players with low OBP." So it's rather disingenuous to link that attitude with a completely different situation a year later. He's not coming off consecutive down years; he had the best walk rate of his career; and most importantly, you don't have to trade to get him.
  10. I thought he had nice definition in his shoulders and arms, but his abs could have used a little more work if you ask me. :-k Baseball players don't have to be models to be in game shape. I agree - In fact I think that most are too "in" shape. The zero percent body fat doesn't work well in baseball. I'm sorry, but that makes absolutely no sense. I didn't make the comment, but I've read several doctors' opinions on it. Over the course of a season, due to travel and SO many games over SUCH a long season, ballplayers tend to lose 10-20 pounds over the course of a season. It's actually more likely to lead to injury when you lose 20 pounds of muscle mass than if you lose 10 pounds of muscle mass and 10 pounds of fat I have NO CLUE if it's right or wrong, but I've read it a few times. SOME level of body fat is healthy- that I DO know. Okay, I can see how not being outrageously low in body fat might help a person withstand the rigors of a 162 game baseball season. I didn't look at it that way originally. I was trying to find any way that fat would help somebody throw a baseball or swing a bat better, and my brain exploded.
  11. I was having a hard time remembering exactly why I was so against Piniella. THen I remembered: he'd probably bring back Rothchild. Crap.

  13. To SE Missouri State's credit, they do have a player named Oge Oge. Yes, first and last name.
  14. Well, when top-25 teams play I-AA schools, funny numbers emerge. Arkansas v. SE Mo. St. 49-0 Arkansas. McFadden runs for a 56 yard TD on the first play of the game. Jones runs for an 85 yard TD later. Michael Smith, the third string tailback, is approaching 100 yards. SEMO's QB is 7-23 for 64 yards. Video game numbers.
  15. Is he going to start taking foul tips to the jewels and punching rival catchers on a regular basis? I'm pretty sure that has more to do with his taking a day off every 5 games or so due to being a catcher and all. I'll still take the friendlier contract and similar offense at a much rarer position from Barrett over Wells.
  16. It ALWAYS is. I can't remember the last time the game was decided by more than a touchdown, if ever. Oh, and McFadden and Jones are beasts. 553 in 5 games while recovering from a dislocated toe ain't bad, especially when splitting duties with Jones, who just has 364 in that same 5 games. Look for the Hogs to throw a lot the next three games. Nutt will likely want to get Mustain more passing reps against lesser competition to get him geared up for the last four game stretch when he may be needed to make plays (at South Carolina, Tennessee, at Mississippi State, LSU). With LSU getting its second conference loss today, Arkansas is seriously in the driver's seat--a game ahead of Auburn, whom they just beat, and two games up on LSU and Alabama, the next closest competitors. Things just got really interesting.
  17. These had to be the easiest votes ever. Actually, the AL could have been Thomas just as easily, now that I think about it.
  18. How is Yakkity Sax not on this list?
  19. ...wow.
  20. Crawford is basically what we hope for Pie to be 3-4 years down the line. I wouldnt' have a problem with getting a guy with his upside at all.
  21. How fast do hot cakes usually fly past you?
  22. This is so true - baseball statistics are FAR more indicative of a player's actual performance, and yet there is so much more resistance to them. Oh the irony. I think the really irony is the resistance to stats are that are far more indicative of a player's actual performance than the few stats that are accepted as "traditional stats". Many people bash "stat geeks" for using stats in an discussion of a player, but then use HR, RBI's, BA to back up their claims. It's even more illogical given that in no other major sport does statistical data tell more of the story. Most of what happens in baseball at the major league level occurs in a span of 60 feet, 6 inches. That can be measured. The other sports have far more variable influence, yet the scenes are far more receptive to quantitative analysis. It boggles the mind.
