High school ratings? Seriously? Why are those even being mentioned? At all? I'd love to see how many guys rated ahead of McFadden won't even play in the NFL. That's a horrible way of evaluating current ability. I mean, awful. By that measure, Ryan Leaf is better than Tom Brady. Seriously, come on. Michael Jordan didn't make a junior high team or whatever. I wonder where the guys that did make it rank among the NBA's great players. So, Bill Polian thought that Peterson could become the GOAT. That's great. He's clearly very gifted. I wonder how many people were suggesting Emmitt Smith might be GOAT status when he got drafted. Remember when everybody made fun of the Texans for taking Mario Williams over Reggie Bush? Remember when Bush was the once-in-a-lifetime, can't-miss talent? In short, a GM saying he could be an all-time great is essentially meaningless. Remember Mark Prior's perfect, injury-free mechanics? Yeah. If health concerns were nonexistent, I'd probably take AP over Run DMC. Taking into account that Peterson has missed time in each of the last three seasons due to injury, I'd say it's close. They're very similar backs, in that they combine very good tailback size and speed, and both run very upright. (AP's bigger? He's listed 6'1, 217, and McFadden's listed 6'2", 215, though granted those are college numbers. In any case, whatever difference there is is fairly insignificant.) I find Peterson to be a bit more fluid a runner, but I"m not sure how much of that is because McFadden's so flat-footed. Sometimes it looks like he has a loose sock at the end of his foot when he runs. So I'm still waiting for a good, concrete reason for AP being superior--much less vasly superior--to McFadden. Things that do not qualify are: that AP was more accomplished 5 years ago; that AP is 2 pounds heavier; That somebody paid AP an unspecific compliment while not commenting on McFadden at all.
