  1. Let's also keep in mind that the Yankees and Red Sox also had better bids for Santana than the Mets. Yet we know how that turned out.
  2. Murton for Kazmir? Okay, Murton and Marshall for Kazmir. We have to make it a fair trade.
  3. I'd rather see the Cubs beat a team with historical signifance (Red Sox, Tigers, Yankees) than the White Sox. I'm willing to bet that if it came down to a Cubs/Sox WS, the outcome would cause rioting in Chicago. With the amount of anymosity between the two fan groups, we're talking 68 Democratic Convention riots.
  4. Intelligent Sox fan is a complete oxymoron.
  5. During the game yesterday, Jon Miller and Joe Morgan were talking about how great Crede is defensively and his stats were posted on the screen. He was the lowest fielding percentage as a 3B and the most errors in the AL. Ooops. But don't let facts get in the way of a great argument.
  6. John Gibbons wonders why he didn't think of that first. :-k
  7. Why stop there? We could have designated runners who stand next to home plate and run for the batter. Designated water bottle destroyers so that angry players don't injure themselves (designated fan kicker in certain cases). Designated clubhouse cancers so the media can pinpoint one specific player as the reason the team is doing terribly. Designated slumpbuster. . . self-explanatory. The possibilities are endless!
  8. There also was gratuitous use of the terms "grinder," "ballplayer," "grittiness," and "grinder mentality." This is the type of article that makes me think he forgot he needed to write a column and got this in just before deadline. The rationale doesn't always fit the numbers, etc.
  9. I assumed Thome would be playing first this weekend at Wrigley. This just cements it. At the very least, we'll see how badly Thome's defense has regressed.
  10. Separate and apart from everything, if I were Hank I'd be hurting that I got pwned by John Kruk.
  11. Maddux The Return: Part II? Oy, I love the guy, but please stay in San Diego.
  12. Based on what I saw in that video, I don't think we'll have to worry about that. The most we have to worry from this guy is his inability to fix our computers when calling in The Geek Squad.
  13. 20-2 rout by the Phillies. Hopefully a harbinger of things to come...
  14. The Yankees are always linked to any superstar-level players at the trade deadline. However, unless they can start making some noise in the East, they have no reason to trade for a mid-season rental. Additionally, if they weren't willing to part with top prospects for Santana, why would they for Sabathia? Although with Victor Martinez out for elbow surgery, this increases the chances that CC will be on the block. Hopefully. :beg:
  15. Reasons I hate Jay Mariotti: - His constant and inflammatory remarks toward every major league sports team in Chicago. - His flip-flopping on key issues (Cubs rock!/Cubs suck! Ozzie's a genius!/Ozzie's an idiot!) related to said sports teams. - His vague generalizations about owners/GMs/fans that paint with a very broad brush. - His reluctance to actually show up at games and talk to athletes on which he is reporting. - His overarching sense of moral superiority every time an athlete makes a personal misstep or gets off to a slow start. - His inability to constructively interact with his colleagues. - His every television appearance as the representative of Chicago sportswriters. I don't think there is the level of "fanboyism" in Chicago sports journalism you think. Reporters like Rick Telander, Greg Couch (to an extent), Rick Morrisey and Chris DeLuca may have their flaws, but I would never call them fanboys.
  16. Does Bonds even want to play at this point? $$$$$ Enjoy the league minimum! Seriously, I doubt Bonds is a consideration at this point by anyone in MLB. And, yes, I think it's more collusion against him than doubting his abilities.
  17. Bradley is indicative of something that I've been wondering about with baseball (heck all major league sports): how strong is the stigma of seeking help through therapists and/or anti-depressents? Every time you hear of a ballplayer being a headcase or lacking mental toughness, the solution is to pawn him off on another team like he has a communicible disease. I realize that everyone needs to agree to seek mental health on their own, but it sounds from all indications that seeing a therapist and being put on some drug may help an athlete like Bradley, Elijah Dukes, etc. Maybe some players do seek help and you just don't hear about it. But it seems that the media and management hype these cases and players like they're a danger to the team and should be treated as such. In this case, Bradley just appears to be a troubled man who could benefit from talking to someone professionally.
  18. Duncan's future line: .450/.675/.900 50 HR Book it.
  19. Because there's someone willing to pay him.
  20. Okay, who let Mariotti sign up under an alias?
  21. The ongoing Mariotti soap opera reminds me of the movie Network. Howard Beale was clinically insane but his antics brought in viewers. I have to imagine with the Sun-Times dwindling circulation, that's the only reason Mariotti still has a job. And say what you will about the man (like he's a world class douchebag who clearly has no right writing in a coloring book let alone for a major daily), his act attracts attention.
  22. Fair enough. I guess we'll just have to wait another month or so to see where the divisions are heading. Right now, there are too many teams still in the hunt. Stupid parity.
  23. The problem with most of that last is that they're either: A. a risk for injury (Burnett, Harden) B. not a certifiable number 2 There are no names out there that I would think would be worth trading Pie/Hill or any of the other Cubs names mentioned. How about Mussina? If the Yankees continue to tank, I'd think he would be available as a half-season rental. Maybe the shift to the NL would benefit him.
  24. Just be careful about who you're buying them from. Never trust people just walking around the perimeter of Wrigley who slyly say "You need two?" I've had friends burned by that in the past. However, if people are standing outside a bar, there's a better chance they work either with a ticket broker or through some other official ticket channel.
