  1. I don't have a problem with the move either. This wasn't based on him getting a cramp one time, he's had problems with cramps keeping him from going as deep as he could throughout the minors as well, from what I understand. Considering his past, I'm also hesitant to bank on him being a perennial 180+ inning guy. Whether Marshall puts up an ERA around 4.00 or an ERA above 5.00 will determine how good of a move that this is. It also depends on what happens in the pen. If Gooz going to the pen gets Eyre out of the mix, then it's even better. If Gooz can turn into a Mariano Rivera type of closer (which is possible, he's got the stuff), it's definitely a good move. If Gooz going to the pen takes a little away from everyone, then it's not as good.
  2. Pagan's doing his best to change this scenario.Ride him while he's hot, it won't last too long.
  3. Any reason given for why the changes coming had to wait until Monday, and not be enacted today? Could they be working a trade or two, and they don't expect them to be complete until Monday? I'm guessing this is part of it. Lou asked Hendry to make some changes and Hendry asked for the weekend to negotiate. Anyone else here think Dempster won't be getting the call anymore in save situations? I hope he's considering Wuertz for the job. I bet Cotts is on the short list to go down since he still has options as well. Dempster has done pretty well. I have no idea what is going to happen. Erye has been bad and came to camp out of shape (I think). I'm guessing he's gone. The problem is that the bullpen is a secondary problem and becuase of the timing of the troubles it is getting all the bame. Like I said before the season started, Hendry gave Lou a chess set with too many pawns and not enough knights and expects him to win. You only get two knights. We don't have our queen.

  6. He can't get major league pitchers, er..hitters...no, pitchers out. There doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong with him. We can't keep trotting this crap out there if we're going to get this thing turned around. How long can they tolerate Eyre sucking (and this goes back to the end of last year, it's not just this year) before they do something about it? Oh, and Wuertz should be closer. I thought we had too many relievers coming out of ST. Now I'm beginning to think we need to make a deal for someone (or bring someone else up). I like Lou, but why on Earth would you bring Eyre in to pitch in that situation? I makes about as much sense as the Chewbacca defense! Anyways, this is getting real old. And I stayed up till midnight to watch this crap?
  7. You should have just titled this thread "Miller called up," then sat back and watched the reactions.
  8. If Guzman struggles, I say pitch Z left handed for the #5 pitcher instead of bringing Miller back up.
  9. No love for Lilly's hot start?
  10. right, i just thought he was born in the Netherlands proper I did too. I had to look it up on Wikipedia before I got it straight.
  11. In other words, people make this stupid disctinction all the time even though they are wrong, so the only right thing to do is keep doing it. Soriano and Sosa are both black. What they are not is african american. this is an unproductive statement. In my definition, I'm distinguishing people by ethnicity. in yours, you distinguish them by skin color. how is that helpful? So you're saying that Renteria is not black? Keep telling yourself that, but I'm pretty sure he's one of the blackest people ever. Does everyone agree that Andrew Jones is black? isn't his ancestry from Curacao Yes, he is the most famous player from Curacao. That's where he was born, but I don't think that's his ancestry. I can't find anything that confirms or denys that. I thought he was born in The Netherlands Curacao is an island that is a part of the Netherlands Antilles. It's a Dutch territory off of the coast of Venezuela.
  12. I'd laugh my butt off if the Onion actually did run the story, without putting any spin on it. That would say it all...

  15. Don't you almost get the feeling that they actually endorse racism, as long as it isn't towards Americans of African descent? I don't see them doing any complaining about teams that have no asians or latinos (are there any that don't have any latinos?).
  16. This is what kills me. These groups come in and say certain cities are racist...and then just don't even count 2/3 of the people because of where they were born...I personally dont' see one bit of difference between Soriano and Lee but to Jesse Jackson its something to start a rally about. Don't forget about Andrew Jones in addition to Renteria and Soriano. I would say that Jessie Jackson is the pot that calls the kettle black, but I don't want him beating down my door demanding an apology.
  17. If poverty is the problem for black kids in the US then why do dirt poor latin kids in Central and South American barrios keep finding a way to play baseball? I think they just like it more. There's a few other factors there. First, you don't find nearly as many 6'6" and above latinos, so you're probably not going to have the same talent pool that realistically could make the NBA. Second, baseball players are idolized way more there than other sports. Third, it's warm year round down there, so baseball is more of a year round sport there, where it's seasonal here. Fourth, a large percentage of the African-American population resides in large cities, where it's much more difficult to quickly pick up a back yard game due to space and what not. Basketball courts are far more numerous in the cities than baseball fields. Latinos choose to play with sticks and improvised gloves, Americans who can't afford the gear just pick up a basketball. It's a result of a combination of many factors. The poverty is certainly a factor, but it's only one of many.
  18. Rainbow-PUSH is a bunch of self-serving idiots. They do more damage to their cause than help with stuff like this. They should be trying to talk to the commissioner to see how they can help jumpstart more of a grass-roots approach to promoting baseball in the larger cities than criticizing teams for not playing black players. Considering the time it takes to develop players and get them to the bigs from the time you draft/sign them, it's not a trend that is going to correct itself anytime soon. They should be looking at the root causes and not the end result. They're far too short-sighted and stupid for that. The Braves are the most successful franchise in baseball since '91. I highly doubt they could have the type of sustained success and dominance that they've had if they were handcuffing themselves by refraining from certain demographics. BTW, I thought Andrew Jones was an African-American? He was born in the Netherlands, but I thought his parents were American, can't find anything to confirm or deny.
  19. Been fighting a crappy satellite internet connection through a dust storm...otherwise, been here... What do you do in Iraq? I'm a company commander for a signal company. Kind of like a CIO for a medium-large company.

  21. ? I guess I'm the only one being bombarded with cheapbooks.com hot chick ads. Download Firefox and get Ad Block Plus Yeah, I'm not going to firefox as my main actual browser, though if such a plugin exists for opera, I'd be all over it. Why Opera over Firefox? Because for the way I browse, opera is much, much more friendly. I usually have 15-20 pages open at all times. When I close it for rebooting or whatever, it opens back up in exactly the same spot. It's also a hair faster in my experience. If you just turn off your computer without manually shutting down firefox, it will ask you the next time you open firefox if you want to restore the last session. It will open up however many tabs in however many windows you had before and automatically pull up the pages they were on. The key is to not close firefox yourself, let windows kill it during the shutdown/reboot process.
  22. MLB is the most exclusive old boys club on the face of the planet. It makes the Bush Administration look like an Amyway convention. There are plenty of people working for ball clubs that have no business being there. The Yankees just fired their trainer who got his job becuase the front office wanted to promote a series of health clubs. The Cubs hired a trainer who didn't have a liscence and then fired the guy who turned him in. MLB let people into clubhouses for the sole purpose of distributing steriods (allegedly). They rehire the likes of Dusty Baker, Phill Garner, and Charlie Manual on an annual basis. I could go on and on. The fact that Marshall is critical of MLB gives him a little more credibility in my estimation. For every Jim Hendry out there, you have a Theo Epstein or a Billy Beane nowadays. There seems to be two camps out there anymore, the progressive sabremeticians, and the old school scouts. What you said is true about the old-school camp. The fact that the progressives don't want him either says something to me.
  23. Its really aggravating how this whole "rap music is to blame" bullcrap is coming to the forefront again. People like to find scapegoats, and rap is somehow convenient in this case.
  24. I don't understand why this needs the commissioner to intervene. This isn't a baseball problem, it's a societal problem. I don't think baseball's rate of problems is higher than any general cross section of society. I bet it's actually a bit lower. You've had a few incidents pop up in short order, but there really haven't been very many in baseball the last several years. You'll find your share of scumbags in every niche of society. Does the commissioner need to hammer down everytime a couple of idiots get in trouble? No. The answer should be that their employers cut ties with them if they're found guilty (and yes, there are some women out there who claim abuse just to get some men in trouble, so you should reserve judgement until the final report is out). If the owners didn't hesitiate to cut bait with guys like these, that would be message enough. I really don't understand where you are getting whatever it is that is behind your last paragraph. No one has ever said it's okay to hit women like you said. You're making rap music a scape goat. The problem is we have too many people having kids who aren't fit to be parents and they don't teach their children any values. As always, I blame the baby boomers.
  25. Give them Ohman if they'll take crapturis. Seems like whenever Lou uses 3-4 relievers in a single inning, Ohman is usually right in the middle of that. Time to move him elsewhere if he's the root of that phenomenom, which he has been lately.
