  1. People keep saying this and it's not true. Neifi was dumped last year. Latroy was dumped. Remlinger was dumped. Borowski was dumped. Matt Lawton was dumped a month after he came here. Neifi wasn't dumped. They found someone dumb enough to take his contract and give us a token prospect in return. Same with Lawton. Remlinger was only dumped late in the last year of his contract when it was obvious we we out of it (ironic how we get rid of crappy players once they've taken us out of the race, not when we're struggling to stay in it....). Borowski wasn't physically right, I don't recall if he had two years or one year on his deal when they cut him. They're nothing physically wrong with Eyre, he's got 1-2/3 season remaining on his contract. I don't think any of the aforementioned moves qualify as precedence in their willingness to cut Eyre. Borowski is the closest one, but that's the only one. Our best hope is that Hendry can trade him. That might seem like impossible, but for all of Hendry's shortcomings, he has been able to pull off a couple of deals that are really mindboggling looking back (see: finding someone to take Neifi with two years on his deal, and actually getting a good return on Todd Hundley, both we thought were impossible).
  2. I was making the point that people are making the judgement on Guzman that he will be an awful major leaguer based on his major league numbers, which pertain to only 29 games. actually, it's his limited major league numbers and his expansive mediocre minor league career. Expansive mediocre minor league career? Never followed him much, did you? He was a stud until he had injury problems, and didn't pitch much for a few years. Predictably, after not hardly pitching for over two years, he was rusty, and his 2006 wasn't anything to brag about. He's been showing the form that made him a top prospect before he had injury problems. The "expansive mediocre minor league career" you speak of was only mediocre for a year or so after coming off of injuries. How did you follow the thread to this point and think that he was talking about Angel Guzman? I had a few tabs open with different threads, and I guess I got lost on that one.

  4. I think Izturis will have some value. He's been solid for the past month or so, and his defense could be attractive to some GM's. His defense is actually pretty bad. He ranks near or below 20th in MLB for starting SSs in RF, ZR, and fld%. I'm sure there's a few GMs that still think his defense is good from when they saw him play 4-5 years ago, so there's hope.
  5. That's a great move my Hopper. If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'. If you get caught, you ain't tryin' hard enough.
  6. I recall a play from the 80s when Andre Dawson made a running catch but got hurt on the catch. I can't recall who the other outfielder was, maybe Dave Martinez? Martinez took the ball out of Dawson's glove and threw it in while the Hawk was laid out. It was called a hit instead of an out because the outfielder who made the catch has to take the ball out of his own glove. I'm pretty sure I recall that incident correctly. If I am, then either they changed the rule since then, or that should have been a hit.
  7. I hope the retards at ESPN pick that up and expose him. Sounds like Freel's going to be okay, thank goodness...
  8. Murton is hitting good enough so that the difference in his bat is worth the drop in defense in RF. Pagan has been a decent enough backup CFer. Pie is tearing up the PCL. He's hitting .382/.448/.539/.987. Definitely worlds better than how he did last year at AAA. Neither Jones nor Pagan are productive enough to justify keeping him at AAA, he should be starting regularly up here. Jones simply isn't doing enough to justify his spot on the roster right now. Edit: forgot to mention Pie's also putting on a little patience clinic down there too ( ) with a 13bb/16k ratio in just 102 AB. I like his newfound selectivity!
  9. Agreed. I REALLY don't like a Pagan/Jones platoon in CF, that's nearly as bad as having Izturis as our everyday shortstop.
  10. fixed? ok so cubs can release him and open up a roster spot for scott eyre at iowa. Eyre cant go to Iowa unless he clears waivers. Even as bad as he has been I doubt he would clear waivers, but at this point its time for Hendry to admit his mistakes and move on from him. I bet he would clear waivers. The best thing that could happen is that someone would pick him up. It's a win-win situation either way. If he clears, he goes to Iowa. We win. If he doesn't, someone else can pick up his nearly 4 million a year salary for this year and next, and we're off of the hook. We win again. I can't see anyone obligating themselves to 3.8xxx million for this year and next year for a reliever with an 8+ ERA.
  11. Thats BS. He was not anywhere near 'below average' in '05 and he started 17 games in '06. This year he struggled in one or two games, and has been very solid in 35 games. People can argue about which defensive stat is the best...but Izturis is 28th among MLB starters at SS in range factor, 19th in Zone Rating, and 22nd in Fielding Percentage. Regardless of what you feel about defensive statistics, when you rank in the bottom of the league in all three of those, I think it's safe to say that you suck. In '05 before he got hurt, he was slightly better than mediocre. He was between 10th and 13th in MLB in all three of those categories. That's not even close to the "gold glove" caliber defense that he's supposed to be known for. In 04, he was tops in Zone rating (probably the best defensive stat, IMO), 18th in range factor, and 4th in fielding percentage. In '03, he was 12th in Zone Rating, 12th in Range Factor, and 6th in Fielding percentage, overall, another slightly-better than mediocre year. Disregarding 2006 because he hardly played, he had one very good season out of the last 4 (before injuries slowed him down), and since the injuries, he has been decidedly below average. He's overpaid, and his defense is more overrated than Soriano's offense. I'd rather let Theriot in the lineup for league minimum than pay Izturis 5 million to suck. The history to support that Izturis is good defensively is lacking, to say the least, and it's all before he lost a step to injuries. Brendan Harris has been surprisingly good (or mediocre, depending on your vantage point). He so far has been one of the better offensive SSs in baseball this year (303 BA 356 OBP), and rates above Izturis in fielding percentage and range factor, and just a hair below in Zone rating.
  12. So continue on arguing that the tow druck driver and stalled car owner have a right to be sued, but you will continue to make fools of yourselves. Hargrove and Tolar should countersue Dean Hancock for negligence in nearly getting them killed because he didn't teach his son not to drink and drive. That would stand about as much chance of winning as Hancocks suit against them, maybe more.
  13. He should sue Darwin's ancestors for his theory that only the smartest and strongest survive while the dumb and unfit should die off. Or he should sue himself for not teaching him to not drink and drive or do drugs.
  14. How would the Yanks match up in a trade with us though? I can't think of any realistic deals where the Yanks could fill one of our needs.
  15. She said that she didn't file a report before because she was worried it would "hurt his career." He probably took her past tolerance of his abuse for granted, and assumed she would again not report him. That, and he's stupid.
  16. There's a difference though. Most of those flops you mentioned had done very well before they got their current contract. Jones was horrible. It's a surprise that Drew and Abreu are doing as bad as they are. It's not a surprise that our $15mil Jones is doing bad. I'd rather have a GM who went after players where there was a basis of reason for expecting them to do good, not a basis to think they're going to suck. You're going to score more often going after Drew and Abreu types than with Jones types. I'm still wishing we would have decided to open the pocket books a couple of years earlier and locked in Vlad or Beltran instead of Soriano.
  17. Ummmmm.....okay............
  18. Anyone ever see Idiocracy? This guy reminds me of Clevon. His wife fits in at the beginning too. There's a whole lotta stupid going on there. As far as he goes, he's got 5 kids from four women, and he's only 22. You'd think he would have figured out what a condom is by now. One of his girlfriends gave birth 8 days after his wife had her first. He beat and abused her, yet she stayed with him, had another kid, got married, and NOW she wants to complain? Can you say "Gold Digger?"
  19. Didn't he already rejoin the team to be checked out? I thought he joined the team in NY. Yes. He did his side session in front of Lou at Shea. Thanks, I thought I was going nuts. Hopefully they aren't even thinking of activating him, and this is just the next step in either releasing him or trading him. I bet something happens on the Miller front (trade, release, promotion) after they've seen Marshall throw a couple of starts. You wish. Worst case scenario is obvious case scenario with the Cubs. I initially didn't put promotion in the list of possibilities for Miller, but after thinking about it again, figured it should be in there. You're probably right. I hope you're wrong.

  21. I'm not a fan of the general direction of transactions going on right now. But I'm not upset about thiNs move in particular. Considering Guzman is already in the pen, Marshall for Cotts was probably the best option. I still don't get the point of Guzman to the bullpen. Although I'm pretty sure knee-jerk Lou is partially blaming Angel for the downfall against the Mets, and in punishing him for leaving the game early. They had made it pretty clear Guzman was going to get several starts when he first got the job, but that ended rather quickly. They are NOT punishing Guzman. Maybe, maybe not. The one thing that's certain is that it was a bad move. There's no maybe to it. Bad move, maybe. Probably. I'd like to see Guz become a successful starter as much as anyone else. But it isn't punishment.

  23. Why now? Why again? Because Giambi was quoted recently (USA Today?) once again apologizing for using "that stuff", and saying "we" should have been more honest. He gave them ammo to once again look to getting out of his contract. They're getting defensive as if he's trying to put it all on the owners. He's throwing the players association under the bus as well. The more defensive they act about it, the worse they look. They need to shut up and bite off their share of that turd sandwich, because they helped make it.
  24. right, to play where? he can barely play 1B in a competent manner. Minor League hitting coach. Need someone else besides Von Joshua that can help teach a little patience.
  25. ??? Let's not judge a guy on a handful of innings his rookie season. He was 23 years old, and jumped from AA to the bigs (he had less than a season at AA at that). He had some good starts, and got rocked a few times. Overall, it wasn't a great year for him, but not horrible given the circumstances. You make it sound like he was flopping as a starter in the minors, which isn't the case. He put up a combined ERA in 2005 around 2.65 or so between Daytona and W Tennessee. Maddux's numbers after his first 35 starts were comparable to what Marshall's numbers are after his first 25. He hasn't proven anything yet, good or bad. He hasn't had time. Now, if you want to argue you're taking a guy who is known to give you 5-6 good innings out of the rotation for a guy who hasn't necessarily proven he's ready, I could agree with that argument.
