  1. He doesn't seem to be much of a patient guy. And he doesn't have a strong track record of performance. He was also rated much, much, much lower than where he was selected. Wouldn't you expect a football fan to question his team if they drafted a guy in the first round who everybody else had listed as a 3rd or 4th rounder? I don't think he's worth getting excited about. Maybe in a few years he'll be a halfway decent baseball player, but that's not exactly exciting. I'm reserving judgement at this time. Wilken's record in Toronto was stellar...16 of his 17 first round picks either are or were quality every day players in the majors. I'm real interested to see the direction our system moves in over the next couple of years. Just because you're not projected high doesn't mean squat in baseball. Look where Pujols was drafted...
  2. Arroyo taking Rusch deep again on the 8th?
  3. I think I'm on record on NSBB as saying several times he's an idiot. I think he's the worst, dumbest, most biased sports writer for a nationally syndicated media outlet.
  4. Yes. Basically, Hendry is delaying the decision of who to take off of the 40man that was created when he added Womak until Prior is ready to come back. I'm hoping he's working on a trade or two. As bad as the team is that Hendry has assembled, he's generally been pretty good at making trades (as long as the trading partner isn't Florida...) Yeah, we gave up Choi for basically nothing. That's one good trade for us against two good trades for Florida...I'd say they're winning so far on that one.
  5. Wuertz must have mentioned OBP. SNAP! ROFLMAO! Well played.
  6. Wasn't Rohlicek one of the guys we got for Flash Gordon from Houston?
  7. I wonder if he was holding back, acting like it was a towel throwing drill instead of to live batters...
  8. Technically, he broke the law to gain an unfavorable advantage. Technically, not cheating. Would Tonya Harding whacking Nancy Kerrigan be classified as cheating? Technically, I don't think having your fiance whack your competitor in the knees is against the rules of the National Figure Skating Association, but I could be wrong.
  9. No one's trying to figure out how many homers Bonds would have hit without Roids, just like no one's trying to figure out how many Ruth would have hit had they called ground rule doubles back then and had today's park dimensions like OMC pointed out. The difference is Bonds knowingly engaged in illegal activities to gain an unfair advantage, while Ruth had no advantages over his contemporaries other than his own natural abilities. One is a legend, the other is a cheater, and as such, the latter doesn't deserve to be treated or remembered like the former.
  10. Personally, I'm tired of seeing Pierre leading off. Until he shows he has the on base skills to justify it, he should be hitting 8th in the lineup right now. He has a worse OBP than everyone else in the linsup today, including Wood!
  11. My fear is that with us winning one out of every 4-7 games is just enough to prevent any needed changes from occuring. Hopefully not...
  12. Oh yeah... WHOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Time to buy stock in the North Face, cuz hell just froze over!
  13. Aurilia hit one in the air. The ball hit off the wall behind the basket, bounced off the basket itself, then plopped out onto the field. Murton ran over and picked it up like it was in play and the umps called it a double. Aurilia or Freel? It was Freel. I get those scrappy MIFs on the Reds confused. ;) Freel and Felipe are the two I always get backwards. I'll never confuse Aurillia with anyone, 'cuz he's one of those ex-Dustyites that I fear us trading for some day.
  14. Let me clarify my original post...I don't want to take anything away from what he did earlier in his career. Before the time he's suspected of beginning to juice, he was probably an "average to above average" first ballot HOFer (that's a heck of an insult, isn't it?). He was a great player, *one* of the greatest of our time back then. However, I don't think you'd find anyone giving him accolades that put a good gap between him and Griffey, ARod, or others. They were all in the same category at the time. It's been Barroid's post-juicing accomplishments that have elevated him to the status of the definitive "greatest player of our time" and put him in the best-of-the-best category alongside Ruth, Aaron, and Mays.
  15. He really hasn't done anything to justify his spot in the pen. Then again, we have a boatload of players who are not justified to be on this team. You mean, besides being a decent reliever(with peripherals that suggest improvement) in 75 innings at the major league level last year and completely dominating AAA this year? He's had 4 outings this year for crying out loud, and only 2 of them were bad. The latter part of your statement is hardly a ringing endorsement. The point is that his two demotions were kneejerk reactions to poor outings. Every reliever has poor outings, and this year we've been sending the message that one bad performance gets your bags sent to Des Moines. Wuertz was a good middle reliever last year, and his strikeout rates and lack of contact made on him in general made him a good candidate to be even better this year. He's been great at Iowa, we should just let him pitch out of the pen instead of rotating him through with the likes of Novoa and Aardsma. I agree. What kills me is that Dusty is known to give guys every opportunity to pitch their way out of ruts like Wuertz was in during ST and his mere pittance of 4 appearances he's gotten this year. For some reason, he has not extended the same opportunity to Wuertz. Consider the fact that we've had several blowout games where he could have gotten some work and could have gotten his confidence back and he never got the opportunity, it just boggles the mind. He is having a similar year as Ohman, but for some reason, Ohman's getting the chance to work through it but Wuertz isn't. Must be that left-arm mystique...
  16. I'm wondering if they're going to give Lightenberg a call up soon. If Aardsma doesn't cut it again, Lightenberg has been killing down in AAA. He's got a 1.04 ERA, but his WHIP is mediocre (I don't know how much of that was rust when he made his first couple of appearances) and his K/9 is less than inspiring. But, he's certainly been effective lately, and he's been used for more than 3 outs on a few occasions and hasn't looked worse for it. He's also not walking anyone (averaging a walk every 9 innings), which is a plus for our staff, as it seems 2/3s of our walks end up scoring.
  17. Isn't there speculation that Maris and his contemporaries were on amphetamines? Players have been skirting the rules since the rules were made, I don't really see the point in getting so upset at Bonds, and I don't like him one bit. So cheating is okay in your book? No, the point is that getting so upset at Bonds because he cheated to break records that were set by people who might have cheated themselves is a bit silly. For all we know, Cy Young and Mendoza might have been cheaters. I think it's absurd to give Bonds a pass and not get upset about his cheating because others *might* have cheated. Just because others *might* have gotten away with it, you don't give those that *did* cheat any slack, otherwise the game loses every bit of credibility that it has. The only way to deter others from cheating in the future is to drop the hammer as hard as you can on those that you know did. Allowing Bonds any slack because Maris may have been on amphetamines is the equivalent to giving Scott Peterson the benefit of the doubt because OJ got over. I didn't say that we should condone what Bonds did. I'm saying that all the vitriol and spite towards him is out of proportion. Should the crew that threw the Black Sox series have been run out of the game the way they were? Anyone who undermines the integrity of the game by cheating deserves every bit of contempt that they receive. Cheaters are cheaters, I don't think anyone deserves to be criticized for hating Barry, he brought it on himself.
  18. Thank you! If Bonds was on the Cubs, people on this site would have such a diffrent attitude on Barry. If you support Sosa especially, then how could you hate Bonds? Ludacris. Best hitter of our generation, people. Big difference between Sosa and Bonds. First off, Sosa's not breaking any records. Second, and most importantly, Sosa is a suspected cheater, while Bonds is a known cheater. Bonds is heralded as the greatest hitter of our generation because of what he has done from 2001 and forward. That's going back to when he was 36. The 4 greatest offensive seasons of his career occured after he turned 36. He was outstanding before that, but nothing he did in his prime was ever considered Ruthian. It's been everything he did after he started juicing in 99 or 2000. you need more than cork sprayed all over the infield to be convinced sammy was a cheater? you have your head in the sand as deep as the ones who defend barry as having never used if you really feel that way. Lets get into symantecs here...Sosa is suspected of using Roids while Bonds is known to have used Roids. This discussion was about Bonds, roids, and an exclamation mark on his accomplishments. I can't stand it when other posters feel the need to railroad the OBVIOUS conversation on an unrelated point because they don't like someone's point of view. If you really want to get into the Sosa vs Bonds debate with the cork, there's two big differences...one, it's been proven that corking your bat does not help you hit more home runs, and two, just about every other bat Sammy's ever used was xrayed to see if they had cork, and none did. His story that it was a one time accident is more believable (in part because he wasn't the sharpest tack in the box) than his assertion he never juiced. But there's no proof to the contrary on either. Back to Bonds vs Sosa...Sosa was caught cheating with cork, and whether or not it was an accident, his reputation was severely tarnished, he was under scrutiny for the rest of his career, and his accomplishments now have an asterisk next to them too. Get yourown head out of the sand and follow the debate rather than railroading the subject off on a tangent.

  22. I would say that Dusty is a terrible manager because I have yet to see a fundamentally sound squad placed on the team by him. I haven't seen good fundamentals from our team since Riggs was fired.
  23. When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was an update of our record over the last 32 games (5-27).
  24. Dusty, Forget the fact that the Yanks have pretty consistantly held a team OBP over .350 for some time now, and they were consistantly over .360 from '96 to '2000 when they were on their run...they may not TALK about OBP, but actions speak louder than words...
