  1. One other thing I like to hammer on...One thing I've enjoyed about this year as opposed to previous years is that at least we're acknowledging we are out of it, and are giving alot of kids the chance to play. In past years, one thing that has always driven me batty with this team, is our refusal to acknowledge when we're out of it, trade veterans, and play kids to evaluate for the next year. Instead, we usually deny we're out of it, trade for more mediocre to subpar "postseason proven" vets, and continue to stifle any opportunities for the kids.
  2. I still want him to work on his footwork at second this off season and give that a shot. If he could hold his own there I think he'd be a solid bat to have up the middle. He can't be any worse than Walker was there. Should Theriot be given a chance to earn a job there as well next year? What if both do well during ST?
  3. I'm in the minority that is lukewarm on Hendry. He's had his share of successes and failures. Just some of them to list... Successes: before being promoted to GM - Built up our international scouting program in both SE Asia and Latin America -Developed what was rated as one of the top farm systems in all of baseball -Acquired Aramis for Bobby Hill -Acquired Derek Lee for Hee Seop Choi -Acquired Murton and Nomar for a bunch of minor leaguers -Didn't get stupid and vastly overpay for Furcal like LA did -Hasn't had any key players walk on him via FA that we wanted to keep Neutral moves -Clement and Alphonseca for Willis and scrap (I call it neutral because it should have been the move that got us to the WS, had it not been for the meltdown, and there was no reason to expect Willis to become so good so soon at the time) Failures: -Failing to implement a sound organizational philosophy centered around the ability to get on base, among other things -Gave up way too much for Pierre (ties in with the faulty organizational philosophy as well, i.e. the prototypical "leadoff man") -Routinely overpaying for crap like Rusch and Pierre -Bringing aboard numerous lefties just for the sake of having a lefty, i.e. Estes, and once again, Rusch (see organizational philosophy again) -Not holding Dusty liable for his poor performance -Relying too much on injury prone players (once again, see organizational philosophy) -Failure to pony up and bring in any impact players as FAs I could live better with his shortcomings if it weren't for the last one. Outside of that, I do not think his shortcomings outweigh his successes, but it's like the old saying goes...one oh sh*t outweighs a thousand atta-boys. His atta-boys don't outweigh the other stuff by enough to satisfy the masses.
  4. Not to worry. I'm sure his arm will fall off any day now. Before or after the 200+ innings we think he can throw before the ASG in 07? fixed
  5. I can just see someone complaining about Hendry going out and signing a righty just for the sake of having a righty...
  6. Not me...if they make the playoffs, then there's a greater chance Girardi is back with then next year. I want him on the market so we have a shot at him.
  7. Novoa's ERA is worse than that of only 9 MLB team's bullpens, there are only 4 MLB bullpens with a worse WHIP. And only 2 bullpens have a worse k/9. There isn't a single team in the game whose bullpen has a worse OPS against than Novoa's 852. I find it very difficult to believe your claim that he's better than the average MLB relief pitcher. Seems to me, if he was, those stats were be more in-line with the middle of the pack team bullpens. His best relative stat is ERA, which is still well below average (in rank, above average in actual ERA), but ERA is a poor way to judge a reliever. Novoa is too hittable, too wild, not overpowering enough and gives up too many homers. He's got nothing servicable about him. Is it really fair to compare our 6th reliever's stats with other teams bullpens averages? Most teams have good closers and setup men who affect the overall numbers. If he were much better, he wouldn't be our # 6 reliever. Let's compare him to other #6s instead and see if he's much worse than league average. for the record, if anyone wants to know where I get 5 or 6, I've got Dumpster, Eyre, Howry, Wuertz, and Ohman all ahead of him on the depth chart.
  8. Almost a good call. Pujols did homer with 2 outs in the 9th, but Miles already got a single to break it up (and was subsequently doubled up in the next play, setting up for Pujols).
  9. Pedro Feliz. ugh even better. You don't think Moore's unexpected call up has anything to do with any impending ARam negotiations? We all view him as having a 1.000 OBP. Hendry sees the .000 batting average. At least we have that going for us
  10. Moore hit by his first major league pitch. Can Scott say "Adam Greenberg?" Let's hope he gets another plate appearance, unlike Greenberg. Can anyone else recall any other team having two rookies getting HBP by the first pitch of their careers in such a short span? It can't be that common.
  11. I don't see the point? That was the Cardinals. I'm talking about the Cubs. Show me one Hendry "rehab project" that has panned out. And please don't bring up Ryan Dempster who was a flash in the pan. And as I stated I have nothing against a reclamation project as long as there is a contingency plan. Since when have the Cubs ever counted on a reclamation project? They didn't count on Wade Miller this year (where they erred again was counting on Wood and Prior, but not Miller). They didn't count on Dempster the year he came back. They didn't count on Fox, who was just a middle reliever. I don't know if Mulder would sign a deal like Miller did (one year, one mil with a club option), but if he would, I can't see why anyone would have a problem with it. That one million isn't going to prevent us from going after any other decent starter on the market.
  12. Uh college football did just start, I still love baseball even if the cubs suck. Hell it's been that way for half my life, the cubs sucking. I meant Pro's. I'm one of the rare ones that have no interest in College Football. But I love, love, love College Basketball. Strange eh? I guess I don't have a College team to root for. Too bad Depaul doesn't have a football team... I have the same sentiments for the U of I. I wish they had a football team. I heard they might get one in another year or so. Yeah, I know they won yeterday, but that was a D1-AA school, that doesn't count.
  13. Yes, his is twice as strong as the average human's and the size of a Buick. You didn't even factor in how good fist-pumping is for your heart, either. Z is good then. :) No, Z doesn't have a heart. He ripped it out of his own chest and ate it once in celebration after striking out Barry Bonds.
  14. Anyone think Hendry wants to see what he has before any potential negotiations with ARam come up? I hope this isn't the case...no matter how well Moore does, he's not ready to take over the role of a starter next year.
  15. Why guess your worst pitcher?
  16. Who will throw the next perfect game? That depends.... Who's taking the mound against us tomorrow? Seriously, I would have to guess Schmidt will throw the next one.
  17. Does anyone know where I might be able to find some stats as to which team made the most outs on the basepaths? Combine pick-offs, caught stealing attempts, and other outs on the basepaths, I bet we lead the league by FAR. I blame Dusty for the poor fundamentals and bad decisions.
  18. I don't want him, but not because of the normal baggage people associate with him. I was for looking at him in the offseason, but he's missed around 9-10 weeks this year due to injuries, which is consistant with 4 of the last 5 years of his career. We don't need any more great players who are good for 80-100 games a year, if that.
  19. Full Article CLASS! You don't hear a lot of players leaving bitter. Who wouldn't want to play in Wrigley in front of great fans... Jacque Jones? LaTroy? CPatt?
  20. give me a break. just admit that, as of right now, you were dead wrong about him. Oh, come on. Did you ever admit when he was sporting a 9+ ERA that you were dead wrong about him at that time? He's had a few good games, and some absolutely miserable ones. When he starts putting up numbers like he did today with some sort of consistency, then we'll talk. 5 of his last 6 starts have been quality starts (6 or more innings, 3 earned runs or less). He's averaging about 7 innings, barely over 2 earned runs, almost 6 Ks and 2 BBs per outing, despite having his schedule thrown off when our braniac manager decided to bring him on in relief the day before he was scheduled to start, and the shutout relief appearance isn't figured into those numbers. He's had one bad appearance in the last 5 weeks. How much more consistant does he have to be before you'll talk?
  21. Dude's got intangibles man. He's a clubhouse presence. That's why he's so valuable.
  22. Froemming, Gregg, Timmons, and Bucknor are all great umpires.... ...when compared to Angel Hernandez. He's got to be THE worst official in sports, professional and amateur. He's the posterboy for what is wrong with baseball and the (to loosly quote Truffle) cohone-less commissioners office.
  23. Barring a meltdown during the last month, I think he's earned a spot in the rotation next year.
  24. This is my biggest beef with Dusty...I've never felt a team he's headed has been fundamentally sound, and there's no excuse for that at this level.
