Really, to look at those two drafts, you have to look at the full drafts. In 2001, after Prior and before Sisco, both of whom were highly regarded pitching prospects, there are maybe 7 guys now in the majors, including David Wright, Mark Teixeira, and Bobby Crosby. Unfortunantly, Prior hasn't reached what we all know he can do, and Sisco, well, we all know about Sisco. After Sisco, there are only a few guys who are making impact on their ML teams now. In fact, 2 of the top 40 who we didn't draft are now in our system (Lewis and Fontenot). In 2002, despite having 4 first round picks, our first one wasn't till the 21st pick. Before that, BJ Upton, Zack Greinke, Prince Fielder, Jeff Francis, Jeremy Hermida, Khalil Greene, Russ Adams, Scott Kazmir, and Nick Swisher had been taken, as well as Scott Moore who now plays for West Tennessee. After Hagerty, there were only McCann and Hayden Penn are really high rated. The fact of the matter has been that drafts are usually a crap shoot. You want to look at a bad draft for the Cubs? Look at 2003. We took Ryan Harvey, who, sure, could still turn it around, but hasn't really done as well as he could. After him? Lastings Milledge, Chad Cordero, Carlos Quentin, David Aardsma, Matt Murton, Ryan Wagner, Rich Wood. The 163 pick? Sean frick'n Marshall. Also, in 2001 and 2002, the people we passed up were passed up by other teams as well. Why? Are they as bad? Did they have necessarily better drafts? Want a really bad draft from that year, look at the O's. They have had nobody really develope from the draft. 2001 and 2002 were both weaker years, with 2001 being stronger and having a bunch of young guys who take a while to develop. While we've had our problems, look at the Royals number 1 picks in the 90's...
