Weak NL Central? 3 years in a row to the WS
neely crenshaw replied to CuseCubFan69's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
the first thing that the central going again tells you is the entire nl is poor. which it is. second..the cards have been the best around the 2 previous years and the astros were playing the best ball last year-once they got everyone up and hitting. no surprises there. next thing...the mets played the series without 2 of their top 3 pitchers and their starting left fielder and still should have won. that's baseball but it does not make the central good. in the playoffs pitching counts and you can be carried by 2 starters and/or a very good bullpen. those things however can not carry you through a 162 game season. it should make us all the more sick to see a team that bad get to the series. knowing that if we had done even a little in the offseason to help our staff we could be there. i mean the catds where much better when healthy but a team that has suppen as their #2 and their offensive threats after pujols are spezio and yadier molina is not very good. with edmonds and rolen being shells of themselves..you have to think if we had any type of team or pitching(like we should have had) we could have been punching our ticket to detroit. of course every other team in the nl could be saying this too. -
Top 3 Managerial Candidates
neely crenshaw replied to Roast's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
oh,oh! it was mentioned today that buck showalter has ties to hendry and is a top candidiate for the chicago job... can we just sign giradi already... if he blows i will still say it was the right move. he is a cub he has experience under torre he has mangerial experience and successful managerial experience.. we lost 95 games....let's give him a shot and right now it looks like that is a move that would energize a lethargic organization. for hendry's sake i also think that he would gather some time if he hires giradi. my thoughts are if improve 10-15 games under giradi..it shows we are geading in the right direction. if we get lou...i expect we win today with what we will pay him. lou ain't signing up to bring along a 5 year plan! -
Are you serious? That's your argument? "Well, if you just throw out a 25+ HR year for only 5M, and add in the fact he *could* suck next year or the one after..." What makes you dislike Jones so much, just because everyone else here does and it's popular? are your serious? yes he had a nice year but we signed him for 3 years at this deal hoping he would do this. it is a multiyear equation ..one good year does not justify signing him for 3 years when it is a very good chance he never reaches these numbers again.if he does hednry is at keast partially right BUT please factor in that having jones for 3 years when we really only need him for 1 to 2 will either cost us murton or delay pie for that amount of time. so unless we are competing for a title next year delating pie is a big deal. not all deals are just about what someone does for 1 season. there is also a chance that because of having jones and murton on the corners it could cost us theriot...becuase we need to upgrade our production somewhere that is not a power spot like 2b. jones is a nice player and the price for 1 year was not terrible..but i did not see anyone else offering that much or for that long...which has to be factored in
-
hold on, you are really going to compare jones and ichiro...and they say jones is better..with a straight face? first..jones is having the best year of his career and ichiro is having his first sort of off year...and ichiro is still better. ichiro's career BA is the same as jones career OBP. jones' great ops is right at ichiro's career OPS. jones hits in hitter friendly wrigley and has his best year slugging... ichiro hits is pitcher friendly safeco and still has great stats..i certainly would just hate to have his .370-375 obp at wrigley! jones is an adequate defender but can't roll the ball to the infield from right ichiro is a great defender with afreakin' cannon for an arm! i have no problem with jones...but with our current outfield configuration he is asked to be a power guy and he isn't that. basically to be a decent offense we either get rid of jones or murton, sign a power hitting cf..or sign a soriano-tejada type to add power at a non pwoer hitting position.
-
the guy is going to hit .290 with 40 hrs and 120+ rbi his team will have the best record in the american league and their pitching is suspect. but exactly what is arod's fault? they didn't win enough? they have 2 starters in mussina and wang. rj is very up an down..heck did they not try out ponson? what does that tell you? i know we can be tough on players but i think i'll live with veryone if we win 9 of 10 divisions like the yankees have not too mention be favorites for the ws championship...poor yankees

How good is Ryan Theriot, really?
neely crenshaw replied to rynesrevenge0206's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
what exactly has theriot donw to not get consideration for the 2b job? his post sw stats are solid. no he will not have slugging but he is a second baseman. if we had a decent of we wouldn't need to have 40 jacks by our 2bagger! let me get thi straight..it's ok that murton doesn't have a great slugging pct as a left fielder because we love him but we have a guy who can play d, looks like he can hit .300 and have an obp og 350 or higher, steal a base or two and we are concerned with his slugging? so let's play cedeno there...who doesn't play d as well as, doesn't hit as well, doesn't hit or get on base as well(probably)..... obvioulsy if we get soriano...he is a different story altogether -
Ichiro Rumor???
neely crenshaw replied to hardcorecubfan's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
I think if Hendry was interested in making a trade for Ichiro it would be with the understanding that he would be willing to sign a new deal with the Cubs. I'm betting that it would take a minimum of four years $48-50 million for Ichiro to keep from becoming a one-year rental. kinda like he did with pierre....it's not a done deal that he would do that. ichiro can flat out play...his obp this year might be 360 but he might hit 360 next year. not too mention he has a better arm than all 3 cub outfielders combined... -
Is Jim Hendry's job REALLY safe??
neely crenshaw replied to don_kessinger_was_good's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
a few weeks ago the had an interview with a gm. it may have been scherholz but i can not remember. regardless, what he said was very interesting. he was asked what made him better than other gm's. he said he thought the thing that set him apart was that recognizing mistakes and fixing them he said all gm's make mistakes..it's just that many of them won't admit it and go down trying to justify there move. it really seems like that is happening at all levels with the cubs. the trib won't can MacPhail because he was there guy to fix this..he hasn't MacPhail won't fire hendry because he was handpicked to fix and extended..but he also hasn't sone it. baker did not get fired because he was hendry's guy and he also didn't get it done the other thing is that as long as hendry had baker...baker took far more heat than hendry. if he had been fired last year or early this and we fell apart..it would certainly point more towards hendry. this also works for MacPhail. if he cans hendry, it will his 3rd gm, if the next gm does not get it done won't that reflect even more on MacPhail? they each had a built in buffer as long as they were all here... now that will have to be changed. if hendry hires his guy, whoever that may be, and the team does not improve, it has got to be hendry's fault. i still can't see how hendry has a job period, let alone got an extension! i certainly could see a move made after the season also..but we can only hope! is there anyway he has a job if next year continues the trend? -
the problem isn't murton in left. it's the fact that we signed jones in right to be our big bopper. jones has left field stats. 25 bombs and 85 rbi is solid but when that is your big bat in the outfield...that's not good. especially at wrigley grace was great because we had a 2b who hit 40..back when hitting 30-40 meant something. that's what we need with murton. we need a big bat to balance. if we could dump jones and get a lee type or get soriano at 2b or ajones in cf...we would have a very nice balance. if we are going to be a good offense - we can't have jones as a 5 hitter. 6 maybe...7th ideally. murton should hit 2...he may not add huge power numbers but he may.i also think it's not a stretch to say his average and obp should go up some..which would make him pretty tough at 2. certainly the best option on this current team.

Nomar?
neely crenshaw replied to JWCUB's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
we can not afford to sign nomar. i am glad he is playing great and is healthy but we need solid offensive help not another gamble. it is ok to gamble when you are the favorite to win the division before you sign nomar...he is a bonus. it is ok to gamble on nomar when you have 3 studs in your rotation plus greg maddux...if he falls apart then your pitching should be good enough to carry you. we no longer have that type of pitching. -
the problem with bynum is that he (from what i can see from his history) is primarily listed as an outfielder but is taking all his turns at 2b. his stats are ok but from what i can tell no one in baseball thinks he is anything other than a utility guy except dusty. for that reason when we are so bad and so far out of it. it seems like we should be finding out if theriot can be the guy next year, same with blanco...catch the kid and see if he can be the back up...you know what you have in lee and even aram...play moore 4 out of 5 days..let's see what we have- and maybe just maybe we can even show some value for potential deals if these guys aren't in our plans! i mean if we are looking at a 2b...why not show off theriot a bit and as long as he keeps hitting...keep sending him out there. i mean bobby hill got us aram, so we might be able to spear something for theriot..who has shown some good upside. the only thing i can figure is that hendry thinks bynum might be the future 2nd bagger..which is crazy. one week of watching mishandles, bobbles , failure to make turns and plain old errors should tell you..he isn't the answer
-
neifi and nevin were good deals. but remember hendry was fixing his own screw ups. if you put it the real context we got harben for sammy sosa and still paid 12 mil or so for sammy. just getting someone to take the contract of neifi was the steal but if we never sign him for his ridiculous deal...we don't need to dump him. heck if we only sign to him a one year we don't really need to dump him.

now correct me if i'm wrong here. did the cubs not petition for more night games with the main reason being the wearing down of players during day games in july and august heat? why are we having so many night games now? it is very mild out which it usually is in september and we have regular night games. of course the reason is...summer is over and the kids are back at school. less people taking days off...etc. i don't have a problem with that, i do have a problem with the cubs selling it as a way to help the team contend. that clearly is not the reason for the night games. at least not when you schedule them in september. the only time we should have a home night game in september is when we come off a late road game and return home.

I have my theory, but I'm not opening that can of worms tonight. i won't either...but it seems his guys have a common denominator...i don't mean being free swingers

Michael Young?
neely crenshaw replied to daske17's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
i disagree with your assesment. hill & marshall will be starting on the big leauge club next year, guzman & marmol need more time in aaa (guzman as a starter & marmol moving to closer) and i think mateo will get a long look as a starter next year too (depending on how prior does health wise). i'm not very high on jkr but i would certainly hope the cubs keep the rest of those guys. if this club is going to win in the near future, they will do so on their starting pitching & bullpen. my point wasn't that none of them will make but that there is noway all of them will make it or help us...so let's use them to get other pieces. they all have some talent and a lot of potential..if we do what we have done lately and hold'em until they have no or little value what's the use of having them! we have z...that's a given prior is still a question mark but he is here as a bonus if we sign 1-2 starters...we only have 2 spots left for prior, marshall, hill, guzman, mateo, marmol, and ryu...we could have a lot of value out there! also if we sign zito...i don't see how we can have both hill and marshall. just too similar. they are also probably our most valuable prospects. -
Michael Young?
neely crenshaw replied to daske17's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
i think his splits would be ok in chicago! first he is at wrigley which is a great hitters park especially after april. the central is full of hitters parks..milwaukee, cincy and houston are all as good as arlington...so most of his national league games would be in great circumstances! right now we have a depth of pitching prospects...we will never be able to use hill, marshall, marmol, guzman, mateo and ryu in the majors. they just won't all work out or get the chance. and that goes double if we are looking to sign some pitching. use these guys for trade bait instead of waiting until the are worth nothing. if we worked this and marshall turned into barry zito it was still worth the chance! we can get a proven product for 3-4 years sometimes you have to gamble. -
wrist injuries linger. i said this when they were atlking about him being back in 4-6. when you have your wrist and hand in a cast for that long the muscles atrophy and i am sure this is what is causing him the most pain. that's why it flairs up after use. these muscles have been trained over years to hand the stress of hitting and preparinf to hit..when they atrophy they go back to zero. it probably will not hurt him BUT WHY TAKE THE CHANCE! imagine the horror if something happens to lee and aram left....we would not even be a good double a team! we simply should not take the chance just to try to keep from losing 100 games...which i am sure is on dusty and hendry's mind.
-
with z not ptiching we will struggle to get 5 wins. if he does pitch he might get 4starts so if he wins 3 the rest of the staff needs to win 3...very,very tough call. we are a solid 3-18 in our last 21.... if we go 6-35 in our last 41 how can hendry still have a job? that would have to be the worst quarter season stretch in the history of baseball!
-
Don't be ridiculous. Miller will be excellent in his appearances the remainder of this year and Buffet Boy will sign him to a three-year, $24 million deal. "We're tickled to have Wade in the fold. He's a warrior who has worked hard to get himself back in pitching shape. His record speaks for itself. Plus, he brought me a big block of cheese." Miller will then proceed to make us long for the days of Shawn Estes. is there any doubt?! the only other option is that he pitches great goes somewhere else and is better than when he was in houston...all on our dime!

9/7: Nice article by Bruce- Cubs Questions
neely crenshaw replied to ryno-mvp23's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
bruce almighty? -
i don't think there is anyway hendry plays it low and goes young and cheap. the trib has got to feel heat from the fans for the garbage of this season and hednry has a 2 year deal. unless he is told from above to do so(very possible) i don't see where he can feel comfortable in his job. i would not mind a youth movement but it is very tempting with the state of the national league to just make a few very good signings and know we could be in the thick of the chase. i mean .500 is in the middle of the wc race....are we that far from being a .500 team?
