  1. Uhh...when? How can this idiot hold our season hostage? Let's just make the games meaningless and not play them at all The Astros might still need to play them. Also, very very superficial, but it would suck to end the season like 94-65 and not get a chance to reason our generation's high in win total. Would love to save 27 or so innings from our pitching staff. But if this has an effect on HFA would they still be played after the season?
  2. 5 with Washington, 6 with Atlanta and us for 4 (they finish hosting Florida for 3). They almost control their destiny as the Cubs and Brewers do (by virtue of 6 head-to-heads). While I prefer to win the division and get the HFA, I am aware that it is not all it is cracked up to be.
  3. Look at the Mets' schedule. Even if we win the division they may pass us. Let's hope Lou has to decide how hard to go for it during that four game series at Shea.
  4. Where else can I post this? I met Dara Torres about ten years ago at a charity swim meet/show. I was totally awestruck by her physical presence. She was like a different species.
  5. I trust the Cubs enough to want a Phillies sweep.
  6. Be careful what you wish for. Twenty years ago I was going to school in NYC. The Bulls were playing the Cavs in a decisive game with the winner going to face the Knicks. The Knicks had the HFA over the Bulls. I was with 50 Knick fans in the student lounge when Jordan hit the shot on Ehlo. They cheered louder than I did. Conference Finals baby. Not quite. The Bulls stole game one at MSG and took the series in six. I know we can sit here and think it's great to avoid Arizona's big three (even though they're .500), the Mets don't have Wagner (but Fernando Tatis will kill us), the Dodgers don't look too threatening (unless they win) and the Phillies (changes by the day). But we need to play better and realize to win anything you have to earn it. A so-called "bad" first round match up shouldn't make a difference.
  7. GOOD MORNING! Turned off the TV with the Brewers up 4-1. Turn on the "Bottom Line" this morning hoping against hope and seeing the Reds won. It's like those TV shows where you think someone is dead but they're alive. How do you really react? I just had one of those moments (OK, on a little smaller scale). I want the division even if our opponent is conceptually more challenging. I'll address that in the "Who we want to play" thread. But I'm happy now.
  8. I am focusing on the division. I concede that the Wild Card is in the bag.
  9. I guess the tension makes the payoff more worthwhile.
  10. So you're saying if we lose 5 out of our next 6 we'll still be more likely than not to make the playoffs(and your #s are wayyyyy too low on that. We'd be at worst 4 games up on a playoff spot with ~20 to go.) I mean, do people really think that this team all of a sudden is terrible? Remember 4 games ago? Not terrible, but couldn't we have a thirty game run, against tough competition, where we go 10-20? I guess I just want the Division and not the Wild Card.
  11. I frankly don't care what BP has as the playoff odds. This losing streak becomes seven, or nine out of ten and that figure will be 60%. The Cubs and Brewers both control their own destiny. The Cubs lead by 4 in loss column, Milwaukee has a much easier schedule. I think a Cub fan has the right to start panicking. I'm not there yet, but I am mapping it out.
  12. I want to win the division. I don't subscribe to the theory that we should go to New York rather than face Arizona's big three. The first tie-breaker for the division is head to head. We lead the Brewers 6-4 with six left. The next tie-breaker is divisional record. Milwaukee actually leads us by half a game there. And if they were to catch us, almost by definition that would have had to improve that advantage. So if we want to win the division tie we need to at least split the six with the Brewers. Of course if we split they are very unlikely to catch us. I think I am beginning to panic.
  13. How long have you been a Cub fan?
  14. I didn't realize he was as old as he is. And also, its weird having reached the point where I consider a prospect old if I'm younger than him. Yeah. Greg Maddux was the first Cub (and major leaguer) younger than I was. Haven't gotten over it yet.
  15. Yeah, if the team that has the player says, "okay, you can have him," then the team that makes the claim gets the player, and his salary. D'oh I forgot about that. I can't remember what it was, but that backfired for some team (it was probably the Mets) and they got stuck with a bad contract. The Padres did that several years ago with Randy Myers to block the Dodgers from getting him. That ended up being a horrific decision by the Padres. They were blocking the Braves. Boy the Braves had a charmed 90s.
  16. I think Hendry is gun-shy about dealing with the Orioles right now. What is it they say about the best trades are sometimes the ones you don't make?
  17. Is Edmonds gonna get a one-year deal from us?
  18. Let's not talk about only scoring a 151, 'kay? Though Kansas was still willing to take me. Their mistake. I'm taking it in October. Haven't been studying as much as I should be. We'll see what happens. Rethink law school.
  19. He has this inning every game! And he was ahead of all three guys.
  20. What other pitcher would you do that with lefty? It's not a bad idea and if it works out for Guzman and the Cubs could afford to do this by waiting for him to pitch 2 to 3 innings every 5th day it could work. What happens if say....he's matched up with Lilly and Lilly goes 7 and Marmol goes 8 and Wood 9. Do you pitch Guz w/another starter or do you wait for Lilly's next start? In such a case you would have to figure out something new for that turn of the rotation. Maybe a couple of innings of mop up and then a reassessment. When I think of pure MLB piggybacking, I am thinking of synergy. Marshall has not proven to be a "horse" though he can be pretty effective. A plan of 5 for Marshall 2 or 3 for Guzman every five days can be a slot. Of course I am thinking that such a slot could probably go on three days rest. So I suppose you can dismiss me, not at all unreasonably, of upsetting the apple cart too much. My general point is that Guzman might not fit into the cookie cutter concepts that have evolved with pitchers, starter;set-up;closer, and as a result becomes a wasted asset.
  21. I'm all for the concept of co-starters piggybacking in starts. But I'm not even sure Guzman can go 5 innings every 5 games. How about three every three?
  22. And now the picture begins to emerge.
  23. I question the assumption that the bullpen is the best place for him. A starter goes on a regular basis and can prepare accordingly. If a pitcher has a lower tolerance, that can be accounted for. Look how the Cubs have been using Harden. Why not use tweeners like Marshall and Guzman, I would include Wood, in tandems. I think Piniella thinks of using Marshall to piggyback on Harden in the right circumstance (he likes the righty/lefty to force the opposition to make the first strategic choice). If Guzman is eventually healthy, why not go five innings every five days as long as there is a two or three inning guy behind him (also on a schedule). Nobody wants to be different I guess.
