  1. 79-83. We all like to focus on what will be better, Soriano, Soto, Ramirez etc., but the fact is there are just as many things that can get worse; Lee, Lilly, Dempster, Wells etc.
  2. You'd lose. Put your money where your mouth is. How? I bet the Cubs finish ahead of the Reds. You bet the Reds finish ahead of the Cubs. We each send $100 (or however much you want to lose) to Vance (completely made up name) or any other trusted member, who will send the funds out after the season. Well I will officially wimp out in front of everybody. My summer will be lousy enough with the Cubs winning 79 games. I don't need the Reds to win anything to prove my point. I suppose if we just bet over/under on Cubs wins based on the Vegas line, it would have more merit. But I will pass on that one too.
  3. You'd lose. As a team the reds hit 8 points lower and had a OBP 14 points lower than the Cubs. The reds OPS was also well below the Cubs. The cubs also had better stats compared to the reds pitching. I just dont see the reds being as good as the Cubs, if only because Baker is their manager and he does not have a roided up player to make him look good.... Those are last year's stats. By that measure the Cubs must have won the division in 2009 because of their 2008 stats. The Cubs are on their way down, the Reds on their way up. They cross this year. You see no rebound from Soto or Soriano? You expect Ramirez to be hurt again? You don't think Byrd can outperform Bradley? On the flip side, you're expecting who to step up for the Reds? Bruce? An 80 year old Scott Rolen? I just don't see it That's why they play the games. If I am wrong, I will be here all summer to get ripped.

  6. May be a little low. But it seems to me it's on the right side of .500. This team is lousy.
  7. If team "chemistry" is affected, it will manifest itself on the field, no? If Bradley is a cancer, someone is going to take that on the field and perform below his true level. Why do we blame Bradley when the affected player underperforms? Who on the Cubs last year performed poorly because of Bradley's presence? And why does that/those player(s) get a pass?
  8. This part bothers me, especially considering we already have a below average left fielder. It could be a bumpy 2010. The Cubs will finish below .500. It won't be bumpy; it'll just be down. If you're serious I'd take that bet. How do we do this? I suppose I get some odds, no?

  10. I guess the Byrd signing answers the question. We've pushed out the period of maximum pain.
  11. I am not a Zambrano-hater, but after reading Tim's front page article I would have to say it sounds like a good start.
  12. An outfield of Soriano, Pie and Fukudome is better than what we're going to have for the money. I don't care about Hendry and Piniella's irrational ideas for the purposes of this discussion. The Bradley trade will just hasten the decline.
  13. What took you so long? I went to my first Cub game in 1971 and I haven't had any Cub paraphanalia for 30 years. How long does Hendry have left on his contract?
  14. With the size of the contracts involved, and the age of the players signed, should the Cubs just stand pat and let nature take its course? Lee and Lilly have one more year, Ramirez(?), Fukudome and Bradley have two. Soto is really the only young player who could be a major part of a winner. Zambrano, Dempster and Soriano are here to stay. With our exciting prospects still in the lower minors, I think we should suffer for a couple of years (what's a couple more years?) and allow the financial hole created by Hendry to heal itself. Of course Hendry would have to be fired to prevent him from recreating the mess. And stranger things have happened than a team like the Cubs competing which would shorten the transition period. It's funny, though. Pie and Nolasco would fill the holes the Cubs are looking to fill to be the favorites in 2010.
  15. Just sign Cameron, move Fukudome to Right, Bradley to Left, and Soriano to Second. Then just have a whole bunch of fun watching your 2010 Chicago Cubs.
  16. Why does anybody assume that Rothschild can fix Harang? Why not assume that Bryan Price can fix Harang? Major League coaches are totally overrated (even though I know and really, really like Bryan Price).
  17. Yeah, I remember a few years ago we had a pitcher whose upside was Clemens and downside was Mussina. And that guy suuuuucked at pitching. The guy I referred to in my "prior" post did not suck at pitching.

  19. Mentioned that the gap between the big market and small market teams would lead to a large number of arb eligible players being non-tendered. He specifically mentioned Garrett Atkins and Jeremy Hermida. I guess it's sort of how Lee was available in '03 although some of these guys would be more than a year from free agency. Wonder if we could benefit?
  20. See the "Channeling Jim Hendry" thread from September 1st.
  21. Was Bud Black manager in SD when he had to restrain Bradley from attacking an ump and Bradley ended up twisting his knee or something? I doubt he wants to go through any of that again. Obviously it was a racist ump. Well the ump got suspended after Todd Helton told Selig what he heard. It was always presumed that the N-word was used. You know a stopped clock is right twice a day.
  22. Agreed. $11-12 mill per for a player who has very little power? No thanks. Figgins seems to be the Juan Pierre of this yr's class. He's better than Pierre because he has a better OBP and better patience. But I wouldn't give him $11-12 a year. I prefer the other potential 2b FA that plays in the LA area. That would be so Hendry-esque. We got nothing from 2B this year, and many of us saw that coming, and the Dodgers paid, what, Hudson $3 million for this year? Then we'll go out and give him a 3/$20 million contract.
  23. Wow is right. Dreyfus was on another planet. He knew nothing about baseball and most of his random comments made absolutely no sense. Was at the game last night and bumped into Dreyfus. He was totally wasted.
