  1. Does this need to be its own thread?
  2. See this is what Im talking about. You're making a stretch over two asusmptions to reach the goal of criticizing Hendry. First, Giles hasn't signed, you have no idea what his deal will be. None. Second, where did you get 50M from? We haven't even signed Howry, yet.
  3. Check the Howry thread. The sniping has already begun, and no one has confirmed that the guy has been signed. Yea. I just don't get it with some Cub fans sometimes. A lot of people on this forum especially (honestly, I spend most of my time at Desipio) only come here to offer their armchair opinion on what we did wrong. There's never any praise for the moves like trading Choi for Lee. Let's not even mention that when we HAD choi, the same people were sniping the people that saw the 10 foot hole in his swing. If we don't sign Howry, Eyre - Hendry didn't learn from his 05 bullpen mistakes. If we do sign them, and pay what we have to in this ridiculous market, oh no we're not trying to win - we're being stupid and throwing away money. Oh, whoever put that intellectually honest comment - I agree, give me a break pal.
  4. All Hendry wants now is a RHP, and I think Bob Howry tops his wish-list. After that he seems to be set, but who is the set up man? Williamson?
  5. What's his $ because even if he's overpaid, he might be a bargain in relation to what Beckett gets. Someone else should probably check, but I'm pretty sure it's 11 million from New York originally. Who knows if Arizona is paying part of it now or what the Cubs would have to pay in the trade. I will also go on record as being in favor of any trade for Vazquez, regardless of money we have to pay. Like I said about Eyre, I really could care less how much we spend on people as long as they help us win a World Series. Vazquez can eat 200 innings, a seemingly unachievable feat for Cubs pitchers lately.
  6. I agree with ya again. Goes back to what I said...scouting and development, as a franchise we're subpar. Especially for a team of our clout and payroll.
  7. Why was he in such a hurry to sign those scrubs? Couldn't he have waited to see if he signed Furcal? Why did he give plan B bench guys so much money? Going in to a season with Nefei as a starter can not be an option. EDIT: I hope I don't sound like a troll. I'm just a nerd who likes chatting about baseball. Who else is available at SS to sign? I suppose you could trade for a Julio Lugo or Alex (Not S) Gonzalez to backup Furcal. And if we don't sign Furcal, that's one more shot to our depth chart at SS. I think 2/4 would have been a little better, but like I said, I don't understand why I should care about it. Why does it affect me as a Cub fan if they overspend on Rusch and Perez? They like the players, they want to keep them. Maybe the players even play harder seeing the loyalty from their team. As long as it doesn't impact another signing, I just see it as a sign of team loyalty and dedication to not bother with a bidding war and just get it overwith.
  8. I don't know if you can honestly be satisfied with "he'll figure something out." Just read this thread - that's what we thought last year with our LF situation. Quality GM or not, the Cubs and Cardinals both share quite the black hole in the outfield this offseason. I don't really understand why you're "working on pitching" either, I don't see any reason to dump Marquis, and finding a fifth starter shouldn't be so overwhelming it takes your eyes off the prize.
  9. Seconded. You have to be happy knowing he won't go to St. Louis. That'd be a sick 2-3-4 of Giles, Pujols, and Edmonds. Giles-Lee-aRam looks pretty good too though.
  10. You should blame the Tribune Co. for this. Hendry doesn't control what is released to the media and what is not. For a comparison, note how the Bears tried to cover up the Miller/Kreutz fiasco because Kreutz is the anchor of the offense. The Cubs, conversely, threw Sosa under the Tribune Corporate bus. Like the above poster noted, they were originally slotted to hit 7th, and if combined, they hit .250/20/70, Hendry would be pleased. The problems elsewhere led to offense at any position being critical, and that just complicated everything. I certainly don't take anything from baseball and apply it to real life, it's a game. I just think when you're breaking down financial statistics, you need to find something to do outside of the house.
  11. I don't think Hendry ever thought Dubois and Hollandsworth would flourish, but he definately thought they'd hold down the fort until Pie/FA '06. Still an error, but not a huge error like basing the offense on them or something. Neifi started because he was the best option for the position, I think that says more about the organization as a whole than Cedeno's talent level. I've said it once and I've said it again, the problem with this organization is scouting and development. Signing Rusch and Neifi to overpriced deals, who cares? It's not genius, but it's not going to stop them from signing anyone they want to, so why does anyone care? Oh, also, anyone - including you and me - would have signed Wood to a 3 year NTC deal after '03, don't kid yourself. edit - html
  12. I was appreciating your logic until those last couple of sentences. That was uncalled for. Hendry has proved masterful in the past at getting quality players at the trading deadline for next to nothing. His offseason moves have not been as heralded. I assume it has to do with the fact that 30 teams are still in the race and no one wants to alienate their fan base before the season even starts. lol. Sorry, I guess all politics jokes are taken personally by default. Still, you have to question the self-loathing that eminates from Cub fans lately.
  13. Will those of you who have criticized Hendry for not going all-out to get Giles please opine as to whether Jocketty deserves the same treatment? He's got holes at both corner-OF positions. Excellent point. I haven't been around these boards lately due to the incessant sniping at Hendry. I can understand the loathing towards Baker, but why Hendry? Is it just 'popular' around here to badmouth him or what? Some of you people need to look into the RECENT past and remember MacPhail. I mean, would you rather have Todd Hundley on a monster deal or Barrett? Wait, don't answer that, also know that we obtained Karros and Grudz for Hundley and they in part helped us reach the NLCS. I'd be thrilled if we got Giles, but if we don't, fine - it doesn't mean Hendry is a goon. Hendry wanted Dempster as closer from day one. Hendry recognized Hollandsworth wasn't working and pushed for Murton. Hendry recognized Cedeno would soon be starting and pushed for it. Hendry traded Sosa. Hendry moved Wood to the bullpen. All five of these moves were whined about on this forum, but all five Hendry ended up doing. I hate to hijack my own thread, but lay off the Hendry-hatred guys. Are you all liberals? We're supossed to hate the enemy!
  14. Some Snippets: While I'm far from convinced we're even a player in Giles, who do you think usurps the Cards as the main player? I'll go with New York, who was turned off by Boras/Damon. I'm not sure if this development helps the Cubs chances or not. Hendry seems to have all his eggs in one basket with Furcal anyway.
  15. last time I checked you cant put statistical clauses into contractual agreements
  16. Maybe, but there is nothing in his minor league record to suggest he is really capable of being truly a patient hitter. If I were to hazard a guess, his best case projection is Raul Mondesi. Not a bad player, but no future superstar. Guys it call "hitting", not "walking." Get it straight, DUDES. Dude, they clog the bases for when Macias and Neifi get all their XBH's.
  17. I forgot to mention the ROtY snubbing. Although with the way Gracie handles himself now, maybe it's for the better ol' four-eyes got the award. I agree with the people who are abstaining from including Neifi/Macias - they play hard, and I would at least keep Neifi on my bench for next year. We're talking about selfish, obnoxious players. Not to hijack my own thread, but what do you all think of T.O. getting suspended by the Eagles today? Assuming Bonds was in the same situation in some hypothetical world, and wanted to come to the Cubs part of a trade. Would you accept such a dangerous player onto the Cubs? Furcal, to a lesser extent, also flies in the face of the "happy-face Cubbies".
  18. I hate him too. He has 'the attitude'.
  19. How can you hate Craig Biggio! Blasphemy. Look up baseball player in an encyclopedia and there's Craig.
  20. Barroid is obviously the trendy pick, but plus he hasn't done much to personally impact me as a Cubs fan. Whatever goes on in San Francisco in general, I try to ignore, actually.
  21. edit: double post
  22. Current Players 1) Curt Schilling - Elitist NeoCon 2) Matt Morris - A .500 headhunter and smacktalker 3) Josh Beckett - Cocky hick, and oh, the flashbacks... Retired Players 1) Chris Sabo, Reds - I just hated looking at his stupid face with those stupid glasses. 2) Andy Van Slyke, Pirates - Did this guy just slaughter the Cubs or what? 3) Delino DeShields - I hated him as a Cardinal, and even more as a Cub. Curious to see other posters loathed players. Make sure to at least add a short reason why!
  23. This is why I don't understand why aRod catches so much flak instead of someone like Schilling. I -loathe- Curt Schilling, easily my most disliked MLB player. Who would YOU rather go bowling with?
  24. The most recent news off the wire has the Mets getting into the bidding as well......at second base. Big Apple beckons? Nov 1 - Furcal's agent told the New York Daily News that free agent shortstop would be interested in playing second base for the Mets alongside shortstop Jose Reyes. Kaz Matsui still has one year and $8 million left on his contract, but the Mets are still pursuing second base options. And Furcal has experience playing second base during winter ball. In addition, Furcal's brother and extended family live in the Bronx. Furcal and his agent meet with the Braves on Wednesday, but he may be too pricey to keep. The Cubs are also expected to bid for Furcal.
