  1. ATLANTA -- Expectations are that Rafael Furcal will file for free agency some time next week. But he and his agent, Paul Kinzer, will first meet with the Braves to evaluate where contract negotiations stand. Furcal will return from his native Dominican Republic on Monday and likely meet with Braves general manager John Schuerholz on Tuesday or Wednesday. The two parties have discussed a contract extension for the past three months. "All things being equal or even if the Braves were close [to other offers], this would be his first option," Kinzer said. "We'll just see what [schuerholz] has to say on Tuesday." http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051028&content_id=1261804&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl
  2. I turn pics off. Who wants to look at Macias.
  3. I don't know if any of you are familiar with this or not. The website is http://www.sportsmogul.com they create a variety of games, but the most popular is Baseball Mogul. It's basically a simulator, more than a 'game'. You can trade, scout, sign free agents, decide contracts/arbitration, edit ticket prices - whatever. I could, theoretically, provide this game free of charge to anyone who is interested. It's really a blast to take control of the Cubs after the 2003 season. ;) My contact information (the buttons) is correct.
  4. I know you were half-kidding half-serious, but you pretty much summed it all up. It's just normal to hate your manager, I'm a man - and its obvious to me what it is. Y chromosone! Testosterone! Men always think we can do better. e.g. Softball Dads. Admit it guys. :(
  5. Fun Fact: Did you know Kevin Mench has the largest head in baseball, and has to have his (now mandatory fitted) caps, and also batting helmets, custom made?
  6. Steinbrenner said Tuesday: "I congratulate the Angels and their manager on the great job they've done." "I laughed when I saw it," Stottlemyre said. "My first thoughts were, 'What about Joe? Joe had done a hell of a job, too.' To congratulate the other manager and not congratulate your own after what he'd done this year, I laughed." 7. But you can't really think that a higher percentage of Braves fans dislike Cox than the percentage of Cubs/Giants fans who dislike Baker. I agree with your assumed point that every team has its upset fans, but my point is, is that the percetages differ.
  8. I found this on the Giants ESPN message board, just thought it was 'funny'.
  9. What do you mean Furcal is a huge reason for Atlanta's success - they're letting him go. Usually Atlanta isn't wrong. Oh, and Furcal is a drunk.
  10. And thats why Ichiro as well can do it? Sorry, but its because Murton puts the ball in play and hence opens the door for opportunity.
  11. To be fair, he had a high BABIP at West Tenn and has been legging out tons of IF hits there too. didn't most people agree that he was irrationally lucky there as well? i suppose it's possible that a guy with moderately above average speed has learned the secret of the crap single, but id be pretty surprised. If its all luck why can't Corey do it with superior speed?
  12. I've been to eight Japanese baseball games, and let me tell you, they're an experience. There's noise -the entire game-. It's sort of like a concert, really. See if you can catch on to any of the chants, which are really fun if you can memorize them. Too bad you can't attend a Hanshin Tigers game, they're basically the Cubs of Japan.
  13. I totally agree!! Walker took TWO paycuts in successive years to be a Cub, and you want to rag on him and his .300 average? Give me a break!!!
  14. Baker just used him in the 10th inning.
  15. It bothers me when people respond to something that was never written. When did anyone in this thread suggest that Hill be turned into a loogy? It seems you want Hill to remain a starter. So do I, but with Jerome Williams still the 5th starter and doing quite well, the Cubs bullpen needing some help and Hill being the best Iowa has to offer, you've really only got two options. Leave Hill in Iowa and let him start or let him help the big club in the bullpen. Sorry, but thems the facts unless Hendry deals one of the 5 starters. Not only did I say nothing about him being a loogy, but as far as I can tell, no one else in this thread was recommending that either, so I don't know who you are referring to when you say "people" and why you would bring up that criticism in this thread. In fact, I wrote that Hill's AAA numbers suggest that he should be quite effective against righties as well, so whats the deal? Frostwyrm did the same thing to me in the Borowski/D-Rays thread. Just a note.
  16. I think the righty-lefty thing is permanently overrated. If Nomar comes back, we have to assume he is 100% ready to go. Can't baby him.

  18. I've gotta hit the sack, its 3am here. I invite any of you to continue this conversation with me on any instant-messaging program however.
  19. why do we need a lead-off hitter if we have one, named Jerr hairston. You said it yourself, didn't we just sweep Florida with him in the lineup? So if we have our lead off man, why not go after another big run producer named Adam Dunn? Because Hairston is not long for Chicago - for multiple reasons, mainly like Ive said before, the Cubs brass seems to think he is a stupid baseball player. And we need more than one leadoff type hitter anyway.
  20. I find it extremely humurous how you're attacking Washington being "lucky" and them "evening out". Maybe when the Cubs have 50+ wins at the break, we can critique how other teams are getting it done. It is NO coincidence we succeeded with Lofton in 2003. This team has needed a leadoff hitter for a DECADE. We've had players like Dunn before - Dawson, Sosa, etc. What we havent had is a Juan Pierre - oh wait, we did for the second half of 2003 and exploded. We also did quite well when Patterson hit .330 at the top of the order, and didnt we just sweep Florida with Hairston leading off? DUNN IS NOT THE ANSWER
  21. I don't mean this to be condescending, but many of these topics have been debated at length, particularly in the Adam Dunn thread in Rivalries. Perhaps reading them might help you out with the opposing opinion. I don't care one bit whether Dunn hits another sacrifice fly for the rest of his playing career. You can't be serious. Do you even notice that the Nationals are in first place by doing the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you just said? I guess a K is better than a sac fly, or moving runners over.
  22. He doesnt have to repeat his AA numbers and hit 340. But if he can get on base, move runners over, hit to all fields - thats what we really need, and he can do it. I disagree. Someone has to be on base for Dunn to drive in, haven't we gone over this ad-nauseum with Lee? Podsednik or Pierre - I would take them in a heartbeat over Dunn. It's not even close.
