http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26867121/maddon-critical-plate-umpire-laz-diaz-loss Not sure where to put this, but bitching about the umps seems to fit here. I honestly do not get Maddon at times like this. Okay, you're complaining about a missed call in a crucial moment. You're complaining about the performance of the ump there. You said it was a strike and not even a borderline pitch. Just a few games ago you mentioned implementing some technology or something to see if a batter checked their swing or went too far on strike 3... So why the hell are you against an electronic (automated) strike zone especially when your own players, like Ben Zobrist, are in favor of it? I think I know the answer -- Maddon really isn't as progressive as the media portrayed him as before he got to Chicago. That reputation was completely made up. He probably likes the stupid "human element" angle that old-school types use against implementing an automated strike zone. I hate umps (and their lack of transparency and accountability), but I also hate players/managers/execs who argue against adopting a superior technological solution to counter shitty strike zones/bad calls made by umps.
