I think his main problem is confidence, not unlike Rich Hill earlier this year. Guzman has nasty stuff. Let's hope he can put it together next season. Confidence is not a problem, throwing strikes is the problem; or rather not throwing them. Confidence is an outcome, not a cause. Guzman has struggled not becuase of what is between his ears, same with Hill. I usually agree with your posts, CubInNY, but I have to say this one is way off. It's a fantastic book. I have to agree. Lack of confidence will CRIPPLE you in any walk of life, especially in a pro sport where you play infront of 30,000 fans. Just ask Ankiel.

I have always heard bits and pieces of the Cindy Sandberg story. I had heard Palmiero and Dave Martinez (I think). I had not heard Lee Smith. Would anyone be willing to give an account of what happened or a link if it is somewhere else? You would think that ballplayers have an easy enough time getting women (and I don't recall Cindy being especially stunning or anything) that they would have enough fortitude to stay away from teammates wives'. Was Sandberg not well liked in the clubhouse? I can understand one or two but it sounds like Cindy was the pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving - every one has at least a little piece - just 'cause its there. -
Someone tipped him off yesterday that he was going to start for the Cubs today. He's from Illinois, lifelong Cubs fan. Well they were probably being realistic - thinking this could have been their only shot to see him in the bigs. Now can the Cubs trade him for anything of value ? :D

This occured to me last week when the Jays made John Macdonald their starting shortstop. The Jays have stated publically that they wanted a defensive shortstop hence Macdonald who may actually be worse than Neifi. The Jays have enough oomf in the rest of their line up to carry a weak stick at SS. I don't know how the two compare defensively. I'd have called Riccardi by now but then again I'd also not have Neifury seemingly starting 3 out of every 4 games. (showcasing for a trade???)

I've never believed the argument that batting order has very little effect on run production. How many more RBI would Derrek Lee have had last year with 2 .400 OBP guys hitting 1st and 2nd in the order? How many more RBI would Neifi Perez have had? How many more RBI would Burnitz have had? Good OBP gets wasted when it is followed by poor AVG/SLG. There is a particular reason that it makes sense to have good OBP guys hitting first in the game. There is also a particular reason that it makes sense to have your biggest boppers hitting directly behind those guys. And just less than 1 run is a significant increase offensively. Just less than a run a game would propel this Cub team from 30th in the league to 10-12th in run production. That is very significant. But your points really come back to WHO is in the order. They did't/don't have two .400 obp to put in front of Lee. If they did and put them behind Lee then production would increase as well. Yes I agree it would be better to bat them infront of Lee (unless one of them was Dunn), but the Cubs current problems are who is in the order and no amount of lineup manipulation is going to overcome that.

Not directly related but I just saw on Baseball America's website that Corey was rated as the 15th best HS prospect of all time. I don't think I realized he had been that highly regarded.

How about changing it up a bit? Dunn or Vlad Guerrero? He is the anti-Dunn in many ways. Would you take Dunn? -

Batting average does mean nothing if that is all you are measuring. Sean Casey or Adam Dunn? Casey has a very respectable career AVG. Dunn does not. Who would you rather have? I'll take Dunn. But are you taking Dunn because of his high OBP or because he has a high OBP complemented by High SLG? It is not JUST his OBP. IF Dunn had the same OBP and hit 10 hrs a year I doubt he has a job (assuming a similar avg) (Plus he would likely walk a lot less). Dunn is a very valuable player - but it is based on precisely 2 talents - taking a walk and hitting HR's and that's fine but he is mediocre at best at everything else. He's a horrible fielder and it is starting to look like he's a terrible hitter (aside from the HR's). I'd take him over C. Lee, not by as wide a margin as some here; he's just such a bad fielder and, I know it's old school, but I think a big leaguer still needs to be able to hit at least .260. Again he obviously makes up for a lot that with the walks and the HRs but that does not mean his .220 avg is not an issue. Saying avg means "nothing" is silly. Two players have the same OPS- I'll take the one with the higher avg every day of the week. -
I remember seeing Bill Madlock doing it as a Pirate (against the Cubs I think).

I don't know why some here can't take a fun question and just have fun with it. Its a good point and I would have thought we were well in the race....sucks that all the other stuff happened. Wow..I know...I'll post the "removing pole from rectum" schematics later for those that need them.

I definately consider Maddux homegrown - with someone like Murton it could be a different story - I am not sure I would consider him home grown. Not that it really matters - just one of those things to talk about.

In fainess they are out producing Zambrano as well. (Well Marshall anyway)

Not only is the current rotation homegrown but the two guys on the disbled list are also products of the Cubs system. So the Cubs are 7 deep in SP (I guess really only potentialy so far as Guzman and Hill have not established themselves yet - Marshall has been pretty impressive though) How unusual is this? Has this happened on previous Cub teams? I don't recall it if it has. What about other teams? Did the A's have an all homegrown rotation recently or this year?

Just for the record...I never implied I was in the least bit enlightened by the news...just that I wasn't going to be to sorry for him. His family, yes, but him, no. Ummm....do you not feel sorry for Kurt Kobain or Jim Morrison either? Lots of people do drugs. I don't get why how a person decided to treat themselves should have any weight on how you feel about their death. Its not like he hurt anyone else Do you know he never hurt anyone else? Substace abusers typically leave a pretty big wake of destruction in the lives of people around them. By all accounts Howe more than dabbled so I'll jump to the conclusion that his wake was sizable. I certainly feel less sorry him and those you mention above than some others who have passed. Nonetheless it is still terribly unfortunate.

I think it has to be more than that. Lee was bad for close to that I think if not more in 03. His season did not end up being that great in the end(it was certainly no write off) but he also slumped a bit at the end. Johnny Damon several years back had a mediocre 1st half and a blazing second half which resulted in his best season to that point (maybe to this point I am not familiar enough with his stats). How long did Aramis slump last year? There are lots of examples of players who pull themselves out of prolonged slumps - Pedro Guerrero, the year he hit all those home runs in a single month (June maybe?), I think had been slumping to that point. It would depend on the depth of the slump but I think when you hit 80 -90 game mark you have a pretty good idea. The longer the slump goes the more difficult and less likely a player is to pull out. I will say 20 games is not near long enough.

I think he's had a couple of multi hit games in his last several starts. Good luck to him I hope he's able to do well.
