  1. Is McGuire out of options? Could they not have sent him down without losing him? He’s been an objectively better player than Berti, but I’m having a hard time seeing how they’re going to get him any playing time.
  2. Illinois was a better team than Michigan last year, beat Michigan convincingly, returns a ton of talent including QB, all 5 starting OL, and NFL-bound edge rusher, and had highly ranked recruiting and transfer portal classes. if you just took the names off the jerseys and labeled them Team A and Team B, there’d be no question which team should be ranked higher.
  3. This seems right. The only other variable (barring injury) is if the Cubs think they get Hodge right in Iowa and want to bring him back before the rosters expand. He could be the Pomeranz replacement or could go in the Horton or Brown relief slot.
  4. I’d do that all week and twice on Tuesday.
  5. Dylan Harper looks a bit like his dad. Ron Harper Jr looks like his dad put on a bad Afro wig and hoped nobody would notice.
  6. I’ve been trying to come up with a comparable run to what the Pacers have done in this year’s playoffs and drawing a blank. Maybe the 78 Sonics? Got off to a slow start. Got their coach fired and replaced by Lenny Wilkins. Their best players, Sikma and DJ were 22 and 23 years old and far from establishing themselves as future HoFers. Lost to the Unseld Bullets who were in the midst of a 4 finals in 9 years run before beating them in the rematch the next year.
  7. The people who aren’t watching this because they aren’t “name brand” teams are missing one hell of a series.
  8. Pacers-Knicks is going to be a 7-game classic. Then the winner will lose to the Thunder in 5.
  9. Pacers (my team) vs Knicks (my wife’s team) in the EC Finals would make for a tense couple weeks in the champaignchris household. We barely made it through the second round last year. She even broke out her vintage 1992 John Starks jersey. We’re still in counseling.
  10. Are the Pirates even going to attempt to put some sort of team around Skenes during the next 4 seasons before he hits free agency? We’re only about 12 months until the “the Pirates should start shopping Skenes” articles start popping up.
  11. Saw several X comments to the effect of, “Now we know what it would have looked like if the Bears had drafted Mahomes.”
  12. That seems like an awful lot to spend on a guy who hasn’t pitched more than 88 innings in a season at any level since 2019.
  13. I don’t love this free agent class for the Cubs outside of Soto. I don’t see much that moves the needle, especially on the position player side. They’ll probably sign a catcher like Jansen or Diaz. if Bellinger walks, maybe they sign someone like Santander or Alonso, but I suspect Bellinger stays. Adames or Bregman might be fun if they move Busch or Hoerner in a Vlad Jr or Rooker trade. After that, you’re talking about bottom of the bench back-filling to replace Wisdom, Mastrobuoni, etc. On the pitching side, I think they have to sign one proven starter. As much as I’d like them to make a play for Burnes, I have a hard time seeing Hoyer going after him when Flaherty and Snell will be available with no QO attached. As for relievers, the market is yuck, unless the Brewers let Williams walk for some strange reason. I’m not particularly enthusiastic about any of Estevez, Holmes or Scott. I guess I probably prefer Scott.
  14. The top 4 ranked conference opponents get the top 4 seeds. So, if we use the latest AP poll as a proxy for the tournament committee’s rankings, you have getting first round byes: #1 Oregon #2 Georgia #3 Miami #4 Iowa St Then you get the next best conference champ and 7 at large teams ranked by the committee Again, using the AP poll as a stand in: #5 Penn St #6 Ohio St #7 Texas #8 Tennessee #9 LSU #10 Clemson #11 BYU #12 Boise St
  15. Illinois plays likely #1 Oregon on the road and then finishes off with 4 decent but not scary teams, where Illinois will be favored in each game. if they can keep it not-too-embarrassing in Oregon and then take care of business, they’ll be 10-2 against an ok schedule with the only two losses against probable top 5 opponents on the road. I hate to even say it out loud, but that’s a playoff resume there.
  16. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but the Padres going with anything other than their classic brown and banana yellow color scheme is just plain wrong.
  17. I know it’s not news to anyone here, but Taillon has been really good for going on a year and a half now.
  18. If he can just hit like he has over the last month - .650ish OPS - he’ll be a very valuable player for several years.
  19. Guys arms were falling off. Sutter was 31 years old in 1984 and only threw 154 innings for the rest of his career after that.
  20. Thing to remember about the Sandberg game is that Bruce Sutter was in god-mode that season. Had a 1.54 ERA over 122 innings. He gave up those two HRs to Sandberg and only gave up 7 in the 119 other innings he pitched that year.
  21. Is Kyrie Irving wearing moccasins?
  22. NCAA: We have the best two offenses in the county playing each other in a high profile game. Great! We won’t call any fouls and turn it into a rock fight.
  23. From MLB Trade Rumors’ top 50 free agents, the Cubs signed numbers 2, 10 and 46. They also traded a couple teenagers for a MLB-ready consensus top-100 prospect. The Cubs’ offseason was un-sexy, slow and conservative as heck, but overall pretty effective.
  24. Interior O-Line.
