They really serve the same purpose. So Hoffs had one big game. Wards come up with some big hits. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Hoff has had more than just "one big game". He's obviously the better player at this point. Hoff also didn't sit his ass on the bench throughout an entire year, but played nearly every day in AAA where he also mashed the hell out of the ball, hitting .362/.393/.752 with 25 HR and 34 doubles in just 71 games . And its not easy for a player, especially a rookie to go from playing everyday to being a bat off the bench. Daryle Ward career pinch hitting- .232/.328/.382 (.711)
