  1. Hitting is by far the most important aspect of any postition player, so there's no distinction there. But it's not the only thing. You don't think a "good" player with below average defense could become a "very good" player with elite defense? not a freaking 1b. Okay, do defense shouldn't be accounted for at all just because he's a 1B? That's basically what you're saying right now. So Jason Giambi and Derrek Lee put up identical numbers next season. By your logic they should both be rated equally even though when is great defensively and one is a nightmare. Nice.
  2. It sounds like you guys are trying to convince yourselves of something being up. Why the hell owuld the Padres want Kevin Gregg? I can just see it now Towers: "Look Jim, I really like the package you're offering...it's just one player short. I MUST have Kevin Gregg in this deal.Nobody you have can take his place. We're talking about Jake Peavy here. Get Kevin Gregg and you've got yourself a deal."

You don't think a "good" player with below average defense could become a "very good" player with elite defense? There is definitely a distinction. Either way, it doesn't matter and it's nbot at all the point. I know right when I typed "very good" that this would ahppen. The point is that he got a good player for nothing and the fact that it was a salary dump had nothing to do with it.
  4. But he has also hosed them Lee for Choi was a salary dump. Not sure that's the best comparison. And Willis et. al for Alfonseca/Clement is debatable. It doesn't matter if it was a salary dump, they still got crappy players back for a very good player. Except Lee wasn't very good when they got him and he's only had one very good season as a Cub. He's been a not at all special first baseman for the vast majority of his career. I said very good player, not very good hitter

  6. Yeah, unless your name is Rich Hill, Michael Wuertz, Scott Eyre, etc...
  7. That only happens with players who are good at baseball
  8. Well one joker makes something up and then everybody piggybacks it
  9. 1.30 1.54 1.39 1.23 1.28 Those are Gregg's WHIP numbers over the past 5 seasons. Neat.
  10. We just traded our 2008 4th ranked organizational prospect (BA) for Kevin Gregg. Kevin Gregg. If we lose Wood and this is our only replacement then our bullpen is going to be pretty ugly next year.
  11. Eww. 8.25 mil is expensive for a RF with crappy production like that. I'd rather move DeRosa to right and give Fontenot a full time job than get Winn
  12. Not going to happen because he doesn't hit left handed.
  13. You know the A's aren't competing next year...right?
  14. Donnie, I really want to believe you man. What did your sources tell you then? Really nothing beyond "Jake wants to be in Chicago" and "Atlanta isn't going to happen". I have more to say, but the more I think about it the more it could hurt the Cubs chances of getting him. I'm a Cubs fan first and foremost so I will not risk reducing the Cubs chances of getting one of the best pitchers in MLB just to improve my credibility with the board as a whole. Is your source Peace, Belkast or Big Bird over at Oriole Hangout. Those guys called the Cubs deal for Brian Roberts last years weeks before it happened. So did every single writer
  15. Here's the Wittenmeyer article in question Wow, way to jump to conclusions. So everybody lied about the Cubs actually being interested in Peavy and Lou just spoiled everyone's master plan? Right.
  16. So let me get this straight.....his "sources" are just now coming out and telling him that the Cubs weren't serious about getting Peavy? Why now? Why hasn't anyone else heard this? The sources must have been swon to secrecy by Jim Hendyr to not reveal his masterful plan to help Towers. I guess one of them accidentaly slip when the great Gordon Wittenmeyer asked him about it. "Hey, I read that quote from Piniella...is he just playing dumb or was the Cubs interest in Peavy phony?" "Yeah, they were never interested.....OOPS" "Aha! Got you. I'm going to break this story and become huge!" Wittenmeyer is taking one Piniella quote, twisting ito ut of context, and then writing some BS about what "his sources have told him". I don't think we get Peavy, but that's a garbage article from a garbage writer. Isn't this the same Gordon Wittenmeyer who constantly publishes rumors that are way out there and not even close to being true? Like last season when he claimed we were on our way to getting Bedard and Roberts?
  17. Yeah, I don't believe that for a second. Wittenmeyer is a big time hack
  18. I'll take the over. What about under 1.25 WHIP on the two? The last time either of them had a WHIP that low was 2004. You mean a WHIP that high?
  19. You know he has like 100 posts in like 5 years, right? I'm not saying I believe him, but he's rarely on here anyways and when he posts it's been late at night, so I'm not sure what your point is.
  20. This is really starting to feel like the Roberts thread. Everybody is just kind of hanging around rehashing the same stuff and waiting for something new. Sucks
  21. It would seem kind of silly to build a team around power when you play half your games in Petco.
  22. This thread reminded me of the Roberts stuff from last year so I went and checked out OH again just for fun. I saw a Roberts thread and one of the first posts I read was one from bigbird saying "Better than a 50% chance Roberts gets traded this offseason" followed by dozens of posts of people asking him for more info and details. Pretty funny.
