  1. How do the Cardinals look without Carp and Wainwright? How about the Mets without Santana and Maine? The difference is that Zambrano and Harden getting hurt is much more likely than most teams 1/2 starters. Did Santana have shoulder problems last year? Is Maine a lock to miss significant time? And the Cards were without Carp all last year and they still won 86 games.
  2. But we're talking about depth that is actually good, not depth with crappy players. If Zambrano gets hurt during a period where Harden is also out,how are we looking? Not only is our rotation a mess, but the bullpen is weakened significantly because you're taking guys from that to replace (or attempt to replace) the injured starters. I'd say right with Heilman we'd have pretty decent depth but not "plenty"
  3. He has definitely said in the past that he'd prefer not to move from leadoff. That's not what I'm talking about. He's said he doesn;t prefer it, but he always has said he would.... which is why they've tried it already since he's been here. It doesn't really matter what he wants. He'll do what he's told
  4. That's exactly my thought on this potential deal. That, or the Padres may prefer taking Heilman instead of Marshall in a Peavy deal. it's gotta be one of the two. the cubs certainly have enough pitching depth as it is. there's no reason to add heilman and not make a corresponding move. I don't know if they have all that much pitching depth as it is. I'd say they have an overabundance if they make this move. If a Peavy deal is in the works and actually happens, then they would take a pretty big hit to the pitching staff. Without Peavy: Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, Lilly, Marshall Pen: Olson, Heilman*, Gaudin, Wuertz, Vizcaino, Guzman, Marmol, Gregg, Samardzija, Cotts, Hill, Hart, Ascanio. But how many of those guys are actually decent? decent enough to be the 5th starter? i'd say quite a few of them. olson, heilman, marshall, guzman, shark, at least. We have no idea if Olson is good enough. He certainly wasn't good enough last season and we can't just count on the "changing leagues" stuff to suddenly make him good right away. I'm not sold on Samardzija, and we can't count on Guzman for anything. Plus Heilman has never been good as a starter.

  7. I wonder if this means Marshall is likely to go in a potential Peavy trade and Hendry sees Heilman filling in for Marshall as the swingman and guy to back up Harden
  8. Hasn't Soriano said this multiple times since he's been with the Cubs? He says it every offseason. I don't think it's ever been a question of whether or not he'd actually move from the leadoff spot. The question has always been whether or not it's smart
  9. He's not a bad hitter but he'd probably be too expensive for what he's actually worth
  10. Sounds like this will indeed drag out until opening day... at the soonest from Bruce in the comments section of his blog- http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/1292
  11. spoiler that ish. i spoilered the big one do the small ones really need to spoilered, especially considering they end this debate?

  13. Sounds to me like Depodesta is the one blowing smoke...up the behind of everyone who listened to the interview. If that were true, then how does he explain the "the train has left the station" quotes from Towers earlier in the season. Also, why were they so close to trades with multiple teams?
  14. By the way, this is the article from that same mlb.com guy In this, he says it qouldn't happen until the sale is FINAL, meaning not until right around opening day.... if then http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090126&content_id=3773980&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc&partnerId=rss_chc
  15. Weren't the Padres emphatic about getting a pitching heavy deal though.. or was that just if it was with the Cubs? Either way, we shouldn't really be putting much, if any, stock into what that guy said. I've never even heard of him and he was clearly way off with the first package he mentioned with the Cubs.
  16. http://chicagocubsonline.com/archives/2009/01/cubsrumors12509.php That's a pretty impressive package, that beats just about anything the Cubs can do without going crazy like a 6-1 or 7-2 deal. Once you get by the names, that package really as great as it sounds.
  17. I think you misread the article
  18. You're overreacting. They're in a small slump. Did you expect them to dominate all season? If this is our worst stretch of the season then you can't complain. It's not like they've completely fallen apart. They're 5-4-1 in their last 10. Before they lost these last 2 in a row, they had gotten 7 out of 8 possible points in the 4 previous games. So you're saying the 24-19-5 Coyotes and 24-19-3 Oilers are better than the 25-12-8 Hawks?
  19. Except last year when they were about 80 games behind us. i don't remember that. i remember us winning an obscene amount of games and them still being within shouting distance most of the year. they were still a threat last year. luckily we had a ridiculous season and didn't have to sweat it out until the end. if they won 86 games with the roster they had last year and a ridiculous amount of blown games by the bullpen, then you'd be dumb to ever write them off before a season. I wrote them off last year before the season. I was not dumb to do so. Yes it was, unless you also predicted the Cubs would win 97 games. If you predicted 85-90 wins like most people were, then it was dumb to write them off, since they were right there. Writing a team off implies that they're going to suck. 86-76 is far from suck
  20. What did Karros do? I don't remember that Similar thing, took a full page ad out in the Trib, thanking Cubs fans for a great year and said what an honor it was to be a Cub, how much he enjoyed it, etc. A whole page? That's pretty cool, but kind of weird. Not unexpected though. I remember Karros really being amazed at the whole Cubs culture when he was here
