You wouldn't do it? No. Brett Jackson has the skillset that embodies everything Theo Epstein would (ideally) try and build our farm system around, and he's pretty much MLB ready. Why trade him in this situation? i'm saying if you HAD to trade him in order to get epstein. if it was the difference between getting theo, you wouldn't do it?

And Soriano... and Casey Coleman, Rodrigo Lopez, etc. I think it's just going to be money. I think it's going to be 2nd tier talent. Probably better than what the Marlins gave up for Ozzie, but not someone that should superbly trouble the fanbase. At best, perhaps could see a Flaherty get sent that way. I'll be surprised if it's a better talent than that, unless it's one of our low level kids. Just a guess. Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked to see us go as high as Brett Jackson or even Andrew Cashner. And I can't say I'd turn either of those down. Yea the idea of giving up somebody like Cashner or Jackson for any non-player acquisition seems ridiculous on the surface, but in this case I would give up one of them for Epstein. I think the difference between Theo Epstein and somebody like Rich han is worth giving up one of those guys. I mean, would anybody here actually turn down Theo Epstein if all they had to do was trade one of those guys? You have to do it, right?

theo is lebron. hahn is boozer. theo will stay in boston and we'll say things like "hahn is still a great hire" to mask our pain. then it will turn out hahn is not-so-great and we'll realize how close we were to epstein.

What makes it such a likely choice? And what evidence do we have that Theo believes he could turn Sandberg into an extension of the front office? Because Ryno wants the job, Cubs fans (most of them) want Ryno to have the job and Theo apparently likes him as a managerial material (he tried to hire him as the AAA manager)? And I used the caveat "unless he has someone in mind". Listen, I don't want to see Sandberg as manager one bit, but if I had to handicap the field, I'd put Ryno as the favorite. Not to get too far off this awesome threads track, but why is Ryno not wanted by many here? Seriously now, other than win, what's the problem? Seriously?

I'm just hoping Hahn is the worst case scenario. That little stretch where names like Byrnes and Colleti were being brought up was scary.

I'd assume that if Theo was 95% wanting to stay in Boston he wouldn't risk hurting his standing among Sox fans by interviewing with the Cubs and then staying in Boston. The story said the Sox haven't granted Theo permission. That's not Epstein's decision. It didn't say he doesn't want to interview with the Cubs.

At this point, anybody who doesn't think Epstein is the first choice is either naive or stupid. 1. Ricketts basically said that the Red Sox are his model as to what he wants to do. 2. The media in both towns and nationally are jumping all over the story. 3. He has asked permission to talk to Epstein. 4. The delay can be explained by the Jewish holiday and/or the discussion of compensation. Now tell me that Ricketts won't look like an idiot if he has a press conference next week to introduce his new GM - Rick Hahn (who he claims was his first choice all along). Please explain what you're actually complaining about here and what Ricketts has done wrong. He's said NOTHING about Theo Epstein. So you're criticizing him because Epstein is his first choice? Or are you criticizing him because the media is speculating like they do on everything sports related? Or are you just criticizing for having a "first choice" in his GM search?

outside of soriano, the cubs will be off the hook of every significant contract by the end of next season. really the gm will be walking into a situation where he has a clean slate for how he initially wants to go after free agents and build the team in the immediate future.

I suppose if you go by significance of the person at the time, yea, although Nomar and Aramis are pretty close. Otherwise I imagine that'd be getting Sammy from the Sox. not even close. no player would be as big as getting a massive culture change in your organization (after needing it for sooo long)

if theo agreed to terms with the cubs, what would be the first thing we heard? notice of a schedules press conference from the cubs? something from the sox? or would it leak to the media first?

that was the feeling i got. they kept putting emphasis on the fact that they all make decisions together and that they have a great team even though theyve collapsed the last 2 years.
