  1. Outside shot of getting a 'crowd rises to their feet' moment in the first inning of the first home game here
  2. Yeah I understand the concerns about the offense slowing down but it was somewhat unsustainable anyways, as much as I would love to continue the stateside team .866 OPS. The weather should help Shota as much, if not more, than it hurts us.
  3. In front left center, but not overly strong. Also cold.
  4. Look we just need to keep him in Iowa until he can prove he looks comfortable as a major leaguer. That's just how you do things.
  5. Going to do that annoying thing I do every now and then. The bullpen certainly isn't a strength, but if we're saying this years problems are the same as last years problems, I've put, for 2024, the Cubs starters line, the Cubs bullpen line, the league wide starters line, and the league wide bullpen line in random order here. Try to suss it out. 8.96 K/9, 3.44 BB/9, 3.97 ERA 8.34 K/9, 2.89 BB/9, 4.15 ERA 7.95 K/9, 2.57 BB/9, 3.77 ERA 9.25 K/9, 3.76 BB/9, 3.81 ERA We shouldn't settle for middle of the pack in a playoff year, full stop. But we had some bad sequencing luck last year and the painful losses are always going to stand out more than, say, holding the lead on Tuesday. It's probably going to be average, and come down to pressing the right buttons at the right times and then just hoping the coin flips the right way. I've basically just become a nihilist on the bullpen. It's pitching BABIP.
  6. Man, it's easy to say when everything is going well, but being able to roll out (by last year's wRC, minimum 300 PAs) the: 50th best hitter in baseball 22nd best hitter in baseball 3rd best hitter in baseball 63rd best hitter in baseball at the top of your lineup is a luxury very, very few teams can match.
  7. Will defer to you guys about how bad PCA looked in his PA, but Springs by all accounts seems like a very tough LHP. Might have been a good day to give try out the Happ/Tucker/Suzuki outfield and give Workman some PAs, but think the right decision was made to keep the offense humming as it has been.
  8. Just box score watching so far, but good start for Jamo and a little bit of a missed opportunity offensively (single, walk, FO, K, K).
  9. Another dumb thing along the lines of using up BABIP or wasting home runs is like...well they can't possibly keep up this winning pace, so it's going to revert soon. Basically just gamblers fallacy ad nauseum.
  10. Early season optimism, blah blah blah.....that's a fun lineup to read down. Edit: Compared to game 9 last year, we've gone from: Bellinger > Tucker Morel > Shaw Tauchman > PCA Technically Amaya > Kelly, but big picture black hole to a very promising platoon.
  11. We needed to get the 6 outs either way, the As has 3-4-5 coming up in the 8th. While I'm not totally convinced Hodge is a definitive better option than Pressly at any given point, I'm fine flexing Porter into the spots against the better hitters, especially if it comes with the potential benefit of keeping Pressly happy with the promises that were made to him in the offseason.
  12. Tucker currently has four times as many hits as paredes and smith combined, and infinitely more home runs. I will be as mad as everyone if certain events play out a certain way, but right now, great trade?
  13. lol turner basically just 16 inch softball ed that into center field. Just barely beyond the definition of a swinging bunt. Love it.
  14. Eh. Could go either way. Steele is in his third start in the teams 8th game, hasn’t been sharp in either of them, our bullpen didn’t throw a single high leverage pitch last night and we’ve got our best pitcher going tomorrow. But also the pen has sucked. But also it’s 8 games into the year so the sample size for any of those pitchers is paper thin. Maybe just score 4 more here and then any of the options probably work.
  15. Do we think Tucker is like....cool at all? He objectively rocks and is the best player we've had since the two good years of KB we had. I feel like a total lack of personality is maybe his one weakness keeping me from writing him a Mac/Chase Utley letter.
  16. I got myself into a bit of a mental pickle (not even stoned!) thinking about the version of Dansby that hits 25 home runs is very valuable and how it's great that he already has two, but that it's not great in that one came in a loss and the other came in a blow out win, and so were we wasting some of his (finite) offensive performance...and then around and around until I was ready to completely denounce WAR and probably statistics in general besides WPA. And then I snapped out of it, but, yes, I get the feeling.
  17. Hoerner/PCA/Shaw all in a row there doing their thing makes me happy
  18. Can't get FG to pull the proper splits but feel pretty confident that we've gotten more offensive contributions from our catchers on a cumulative measurement than we did through like, Memorial Day last year. (We had negative fWAR in the first half, so very clearly ahead of that)
  19. Mentioned it above in a way, but had a long weekend (Vegas trip, people over for a BBQ yesterday) and absolutely not at full speed. Estes as their starter, Max Muncy as their second baseman, and me being sure 1908 couldn't possibly be wrong about Erceg led to me wondering if I was still dreaming somehow while scrolling through their Roster Resource page.
  20. Thought I was going crazy for a second, but unless they reacquire Erceg from the Royal in the next 12 hours I think we're good just trying to avoid Miller. Though Severino tomorrow is going to be a challenge all of his own and I think their lineup is pretty sneaky good.
  21. Jose Quintana, setting aside the fact that he would have been a better signing than Colin Rea, is now their 4th starter. Their third starter put up 0.9 fWAR in 160 innings last year. Bullpen magic-ing is a lot harder without the second best reliever in baseball in the last four years. Rule them out at your own peril, but, objectively, this isn't a good baseball team at the moment.
