  1. Really, all you do is make solider contact against a garbage pitcher like Locke. Really isn't hard. This is why we're fighting for a playoff spot and the Pirates are in autopilot mode until October.
  2. Of course it has to be X-Pac. Whatever...good learning experience for Zystyzyzyzyss
  3. Eh, no Melancon for the 9th, and a part of the order that's had a good game. Keep it here, give them PTSD by making them watch us celebrate on the field.
  4. There's only so many options too. Edwards still isn't going back to back games, Grimm and Chapman are the only other late inning options. Pena is bad until proven otherwise in low leverage, Cahill has thrown the previous 2 days, and Zastryzny isn't really any better an option to finish that inning. Yeah, this is going to happen occasionally in the regular season and much less in the playoffs with the staggered schedule. I just hope Montgomery shows enough to take whatever job Travis theoretically has come October.
  5. With the caveat that Maddon is way better at his job than I would be, there is a bit of a silver lining to one of our few objectively bad players playing bad/proving they are bad in a meaningless August game, thus making it less likely that they will play (and theoretically play badly) in an October game.
  6. Unpopular opinion here, but um...go look at some of Jake's highlights from the Wild Card game last year. Not saying we didn't deserve the win, but...we're just as likely to get the calls as we are for them to go against us when it matters (and if you believe in conspiracies, we're probably more likely than not to get the calls, but probably besides the point).
  7. God the Cardinals might really blow this thing.
  8. I think since always, but it's always hard for me to tell before it gets to his verse (and it usually cuts off before that for Rizzo from the times I've been there).
  9. Can you even imagine how not fun this game is for Pirates fans right now? It actually matters for them, and they are getting shut down by the same dude who sent them home less than a year ago (after telling them exactly what was going to happen) while some scrub is on the mound for them getting lit up because their 'ace' got sent home to have his arm examined. And this is game one of this series.
  10. The dream is still alive. My Dad, a Cardinal fan, is sitting in the bleachers and just texted me in an attempt to 'jinx' the no-hitter. After three innings. The fear that Jake (and the rest of this team) puts into the minds of opposing fans will never cease to be amusing.
  11. Jason Heyward, last 7 games (no idea if this includes tonight): .348/.348/.565.
  12. The last two games against subpar pitchers were dumb. 8 spot here please. Or don't. Whatever. Just Jake pitch well please.
  13. Oh so I was only like 40 years behind the times on this one. Perfect, carry on.
  14. Speaking of taking things from the boards/twitter, I was at Wrigley on Saturday for reasons I don't really want to talk about and the people outside selling the t-shirts had one that looked a ton like someone's old (maybe still current?) signature. It was just a list of the key names vertically, with the "&" sign next to all of them, so like... Bryant& Rizzo& Arrieta& Lester& Russell& Heyward... There might have been first names for some of those, can't really remember. Was that an original idea from here or did that come from somewhere else?
  15. After the way this season has gone, I'm going to be incredibly depressed if we lose to anyone in the playoffs (which statistically has about an 80% chance of happening, YAY BASEBALL). I'm not going to be sitting there watching the Nationals celebrating thinking 'thank god it wasn't the Cardinals'. If they somehow define all odds and end up winning it all, it'll just be a little salt in a gaping wound. I'm hoping they make the playoffs because I'm confident they're the second worst team still in contention (besides the Marlins), and I'm hoping for any small advantage to up our odds. They team suck, and we're better in pretty much every aspect of the game (and we even hold our own in neck tattoos). Edit: It was like the 9th best dong of our October, but I'll forever have a soft spot for Wainwright's washed up fake-hardass shell coming into the game in relief and having Soler immediately put one out at like 140 MPH.
  16. An offensive juggernaut for sure, but I'm not sure if I like that OF defense. Schwarber and Soler are both at best average, most towards below average, while Heyward loses some of his defensive value going to CF where he's going to have to cover a whole lot of ground. Bryant in right, Baez at third, either to start the game or in the late innings.
  17. Even us playing luck-neutral so far (I get that pythag probably falls apart at the extremes, but still), has us at 87-38 so far this year, for a .696 winning percentage (nice). The pace works out to 113 wins. It's amazing we're currently 16-17 in one run games. I wonder how common it is for a 100+ win team to be under .500 in that situation. Edit: The Cardinals in 2005 were the last 100+ win team (100-62) to be under .500 in one run games (21-25).
  18. Agreed. If Jake gets to 20, that number plus the streak of good pitching it would likely take to get him there would probably push him over the top. Which is incredible considering how frustrating he's somehow been to me over the last couple months. Last year's Cy Young race was pretty unprecedented.
  19. I think they only have to be something like 5 games over .500 the rest of the way to get 102 wins. Yep, 22-17 I really want 100 wins, but beyond that I would love to finish 103-59 or better. 103-59 looks disproportionately more awesome than 102-60 Agreed, just to completely rise above the whole 'every team wins 60 games and loses 60 games, it's what you do in the other 42 that make all the difference'.
  20. A small part of me hopes he blows this just to revisit what a dumb trade this was. My friends I was with this weekend said he changed our World Series odds from 25% to 50%
  21. That was funnier when it looked like he totally blew the call, but it's still pretty funny that Pena's attempt to back up the throw put him between contreras and the ump as the tag was being made, on the first base side for a throw from right field.
