  1. And have averaged less than 3 runs per game in the last 4 Yeah I know that they were hitting well and I also realize that in this 4 game sample they faced Syndergaard and deGrom, but they also faced 2 garbage starters, the horsefeathers Mets pen and some iffy Phillies relievers. This team is just so up and down at times offensively it seems like they can slip into a slump suddenly. .606 OPS in our last 4 games after having a .959 OPS in the 6 games before that. I guess it’s tough to take anything meaningful from a small sample like that though. Yeah that's just....baseball in general. BABIP, 65% failure rate, etc.
  2. Yeah, maybe I'd feel the same about the West or East teams (besides the Dodgers) if I saw them as often as the Brewers or the Cardinals, but I'd gladly take either of them in the first round. Let those two kill themselves in the one game playoff for the honor of getting swept by the Cubs.
  3. Almora will only play vs Lefties in the playoffs. LaStella might not even make the roster. I yearn for this optimism in Joe.
  4. And the cardinals and Brewers avoid facing both in their series. The VBs or Cardinals face Scherzer this weekend or next week. VBs are in DC for the weekend and Cardinals go there for the next series starting Monday. Scherzer could go on regular rest Sunday vs the VBs or extra rest Monday vs the Cardinals. Also the Cardinals have, after our win today, probably like a 5% chance of winning the division, so who cares. Lol the Brewers.
  5. No, seriously. None of those guys are going to be playing in October. Darn, I guess we'll just have to face....worse pitchers.
  6. The actual players chosen are...whatever. Curious as to the thought process that led to Almora and Schwarber, probably the two most opposite hitters on the team, getting the most ABs. But hey, he said it was going to be wacky, so he had to live up to that.
  7. But what are we going to do against all the good pitchers in October
  8. A picked off runner, a two RBI single off Thor, and a highlight defensive play. Is this the weirdest Lester start of his Cubs career?
  9. Haven't looked at it enough to know what kind of quality it is, but based on the numbers it looks like /r/chicubs is far bigger than NSBB...755 comments on the game thread yesterday, for example.
  10. I'll also take the Reds just being the Reds and handing it to us.
  11. Rizz needs to go on a tear to get to his 31 home runs, might as well get one here.
  12. Started off a decent AB and quickly devolved into a disaster. Oh well, we're fine.
  13. He was better against righties the past two years, but he was still really good against lefties, too. I’ve got no problem with the lineup. Murphy’s probably going to be leadoff a lot and since this is his first game, Joe just threw him there. Everyone complained about Rizzo batting there since nobody was on base for him so that eliminates him and Javy. You’re not putting Heyward there. Almora, Contreras and Happ have all been varying degrees of crap and Bote has done nothing since the slam. So you’re left with Zobrist. Swapping them would be fine or even moving Zo up and moving the other three down a spot but then you’re just shuffling the same four. I know it doesn't ultimately matter over a one game sample. It's just concerning about the thought process that leads to these decisions. Maddon comes out today and says the reason Murphy is leading off is so he can get the most ABs possible before replacing him for defensive purposes, which raises two major issues. One, we have a DH spot available, and two, that just means that he's going to get pulled before he might be in an advantageous spot of facing a righty reliever. Him getting three PAs against Liriano and then getting pulled is the worst way to use him.
  14. He was better against righties the past two years, but he was still really good against lefties, too. Yeah but so is Almora, and Zobrist, and Baez. Almora batting lead off yesterday and sixth today defies all logic.
  15. Anytime you can give the guy with a .622 OPS against lefties the most PAs in a game against a lefty starter, you have to do it.
  16. Since August 1, the Cardinals have gone 16-4. So sure, if you want to extrapolate that out and say the Cardinals will play .800 ball the rest of the year, it'll be tough for us to get the 97 wins we would need to win the division. We'd have to go 26-12, by the way, which is entirely possible. But it absolutely won't be necessary. Yeah this is likely at the end of our bad run and the cardinals good run. I still have scars from 2004 though when the Astros played like .900 ball the last month of the season and never eased up while we plodded along and finished several games back. 28-7 over their last 35, so pretty close.

  18. I don't think he should start against lefties. Against righties, deal with the diminished defense. It's definitely a square peg/round hole situation in terms of where he fits in. But it's a good problem to have, and didn't cost us anything to get there.
  19. Let's try this again, out of mostly boredom: vs L Almora Zobrist Baez Contreras Rizzo Russell Bote Heyward vs R Murphy Zobrist Rizzo Baez Schwarber Happ Contreras Heyward/Bote (depending on whether you want your infield defense or your outfield defense to be miserable)
  20. Yeah everyone, including the Cubs, is aware of how bad defensively he is. He's also been the 12th best hitter in baseball over the last three seasons. I know he got off to an atrocious start, but he's only 33, and has been the 30th best hitter in baseball in the second half this year. Everything else (including him being an horsefeathers) aside, this is an elite bat, and I highly doubt their plan is just to use him as an improved LaStella.
  21. This is probably a meatball take, but I'll take Bote over Murphy at third base if you factor in defense. To the extent Russell is/was still a full time starter, just platoon him with Murphy going forward, and don't change much else.
