  1. While a $1M might not be bad in and of itself alone as a low risk attempt for Marquis, remember we have 40 spots on the 40 man. We can't have half those spots on risks.
  2. I'd give Marquis a minor league contract and invite to spring training.
  3. You think Soto would do better than Blanco regardless of the cost? How is that? Soto is very likely to hit less than Blanco does-even if Blanco regresses signficantly from his career year last year, Soto still only had a 739 OPS in Triple A, and looked lost at the plate in his very limited major league at-bats. If he played for the Cubs next year, I bet he wouldn't get above a .600 OPS. Do you think he's defensively better than Blanco? I doubt that as well. I can see why it can be argued that Soto for cheap is better than Blanco value wise, but I see no way that he's simply the better player. Well I think its a guarantee that Blanco will hit for more power than Soto, whch is where a lot of the OPS difference would come. Soto has a reasonable chance to put up a better OBP, but thats not guaranteed. But I'm mostly looking at the defense, and Soto will provide good D for cheap.
  4. BigBad B, I totally agree with you, but some of those guys are kinda hard to be critical of. Matt Lawton? Only started to suck once we had him Bobby Hill? He was seen as a good prospect. Were we not to give him a chance? Some of these guys filled in during emergencies and hardly saw time, wasn't like Hendry entered the season with them (Jackson, Wilson, Glanville, Ojeda, Grieve) Even the Yanks or BoSox have had their share of embarassing players. But yea, Hendry has had too many.
  5. Since very few posters gave him props for signing his own free agents (ARam, Wood, and Miller), I would think he should be ahead of the GMs that couldn't even sign their own free agents (Soriano, Drew, Schmidt, Zito, CLee, etc.). What? You want to rank him ahead of Beane because he managed to resign Ramirez but Beane didn't resign Zito? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. All I'm saying is that I think Hendry has done a good job so far and deserves some props. I can imagine the 100+ thread of criticism if he let someone like Zito walk, while Beane (and others) come out smelling like a rose. I bet Beane could resign Zito with a payroll exceeding $80Mil, let alone $100+
  6. Barrett is certianly not untouchable. And while I would love to take advantage of selling a player at his high point, I'm not sure it is worth it considering the bargain he is (Barret makes less than $2M more than Blanco- how bout them apples). I'd do it at the right offer, but I'm not sure we'll see that right offer. Anyone think since Barrett is such a bargain it explains why Hendry was willing to spend more on Blanco. Not saying its right, but Hendry might think so. Barrett Blanco Soto Reyes Fox? Yea, we will need to be moving something. Reyes could be cut easily, and while we had 4 last year, thats not really necessary again especially with Blanco around long term. So you figure one other guy could be moved. Fox might have some value as part of a bigger trade. The number of guys on the 40 man, especially at catcher must mean some move is coming.
  7. We are in no rush to offer abritration, as long as it is by the deadline. If team signs him today we can still offer arbitration and get the picks Isn't Pierre a type B free agent? If so, then the Cubs would get no compensation per the new labor agreement, right? We get a supplemental pick. The Giants don't have to give up anything. Thats the difference. I think.
  8. I still don't want to count on him being any more than a number 8 hitter. Its actually a great risk at that spot. With him in the lineup I don't want to be taking any chances on young guys like Theriot or Pie. And I certianly don't want crap like Izturis (not that I ever really did, but I resigned myself to the fact). In fact, if we can dump Izturis without eating much or any salary, we will have basically made an Izturis for DeRosa swap. Only issue then really is that SS might be harder to fill than 2B in this market, but we are showing interest in Lugo anyway. Sign Lugo, sign or trade for a big bat in CF, get a nice 4th OF and our offense would be set Lugo SS Murton LF Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Andruw Jones? CF Barrett C Jaque Jones RF DeRosa 2B I fear we are going to see something like this though: Lugo/Roberts CF DeRosa 2B Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Jaque Jones RF Barrett C Murton LF Izturis SS Really only a difference of one guy, but its a HUGE difference and DeRosa is still a question mark.

  10. Speaking of hometown discounts, if we insisted on keeping Blanco, why couldn't he give us one? Greedy bastard. :) Still, I hate you cubs. Go Soto!
  11. If that is actually the rotation, they had better be adding two impact bats to the lineup. Mark DeRosa and Caesar Iztuis (he was injured for the better part of his time with us so he's like new)
  12. f u cubs. We actually have a young guy who would be a suitable replacement as a backup defensive catcher! In case anyone is counting, we are the same bunch of losers as last year plus DeRosa. Next Up: Gil Meche 5 yrs 60M
  13. You actually forgot Hill, who in m eyes, if this works out well he could be a very dominating #2 quality starter. Now ofcourse I think it will end up more like this. Just taking a stab at it. . Zambrano Hill Cliff Lee Lily Miller/Prior/younguns I meant to throw him with either the Prior or Marshall group. Or I don't, maybe he can net us a good bat in a trade. But you're right, otherwise he would be in there. I think Hill is going to be very good, and that Miller will be fully ready for the '07 season. That should not share a spot. Instead should be considered #4 and #5. With Prior not even in the #5 spot. Prepare the season as if he was not here. If he is, and he's ON. And you need to find a spot for him. . Well then that's a problem I don't mind having. Zambrano i my only absolute right now. The other guys (not sure who, but theres about six of them) account for two other rotation spots at the bottom. That leaves two spots open in the rotation. If I had to guess Hill and Miller would fill those 4 and 5 spots, but its an open competition. It doesn't matter how your break down the groups, you might as well just lump them in one group and call it two spots.

  15. Manny Ramirez but in all seriousness I would think some nothing minor leaguer. Just don't make us eat more than $0.5-1M
  16. I also like the idea of finding a 4th OF who can give some rest to Jones and Murton. He obviously would have to be someone with near equal splits. But having a solid backup, with Pagan as the 5th OF would be quite nice. Disappointed to not see a mention of Drewm who I prefer to Soriano, but I can't say I'm surprised.
  17. Hmmm very interesting... Nice link Serena. I'd still like him as a number 8 hitter and seeing Izturis get far away from this team.
  18. If it is Westbrook over Lee, I want an extention.
  19. I'll live with this signing if Izturis is gone (or at least not starting) and Jones gets a platoon or we uprgade the position altogether. So that means find a masher and leadoff guy from SS and CF I can see it now Roberts CF DeRosa2B Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Jones RF Barrett C Murton LF Izturis SS Yuck DeRosa=fine choice if used as number 8 hitter or super-sub
  20. Maybe I'm crazy and I don't know why the Indians would trade them both, but I would take both of these guys on the Cubs. Zambrano Lee Westbrook Prior/Miller Marshall/Guzman/Mateo Zito looks like his contract demands wont be worth it, we lost out on Matz, Schmidt looks likely to go to Seattle. Any of the FAs will be expensive and no better if not worse than them two. Plus they would cost a combined $8.85M. Less than $9M for 400+ innings of ERA from 3.5-4 (you figure they improve AL-NL). We could really pour our money into the offense. Okay I'm done with my crazy ideas for tonight.
  21. Howry and Eyre and Marmol for Westbrook and Lee!
