Its hard enough getting a max guy to come to Chicago, if the Bulls are already good. I don't think you're getting them with a 25 win roster. I think its definitely a few years of high picks and hoping to draft a star before you're in the picture of any max guys considering them. I'm not trying to sell it as "the plan" or anything, but bottom line is within the next three off seasons the Bulls would need to hand out 130-150 in total commitments (including their own FA) just to meet the salary floor over that period, without even trying to clear space. But they'll have some flexibility how they want to approach it... spread it out each year, or go for a big splash year in 18 or 19.

If you don't sell Rondo as an expiring by taking on a longer term contract, you could easily be looking at 50m+ in 2018 cap space without even getting rid of Lopez (or worthless bit pieces like Payne). Eta - that would be with a max of anywhere from 24 to 36 depending on where the cap falls and the player in question.

Fwiw, based on my calcs Room under salary cap/floor : With no holds on current FA, and Rondo option picked up; 25.9/16 With holds for Felicio and Mirotic, and Rondo option picked up; 12.4/2.5 With Rondo option declined and cap holds for Mirotic/Felicio; 22.8/12.9 So, try and salary dump Rondo as an expiring? Buy out Wade. Offer 2 or 3 year deals at average salary (~6.5m/per) to Felicio and Mirotoc, but don't fret if someone else overpays (probably will for Mirotic). Round out roster with low level FAs. Who cares if you even meet salary floor. Grant-Dunn-Payne (Lavine)-Valentine-Canaan Zipser Markkanen-Portis Lopez-Felicio Plus any Rondo trade salary dump returm and low level FAs. That's a good tank team right?

Re: having a good drafter, did Lloyd end up getting the Orlando GM job? He was always given a lot of credit for the mid aughts draft hits. Can he be brought back?

I can't not be a Bulls fan but this is the closest I could probably get to disowning one of my favorite teams. There is no excuse for what occurred tonight. I mean just in the past three trades we've basically just thrown away 3 picks.

Oh and that pick was from the Deng trade which was made just to avoid the luxury tax. Rofl, we're so good at saving money, guys.

Exactly. I get some people wanted rebuild, but that had to have at least been predicated on a better package.

Solid backup point? Obviously, that's more likely than anything more than that, at this point. But, I thought he had star capability last year before the draft. Nothing to do but hope he bounces back after a horsefeathers first year. I think most likely is he never sees another guaranteed deal.

Rofl, such a lazy response. Quick, name me the last big name FA who signed with the Bulls. Over-the-hill Dwyane Wade doesnt' count Over the hill Gasol? Boozer. Wallace. Bulls probably have as much big name FA success as any team over the past 15 years than any team except Miami, Cleveland, and Golden State.

Stars don't just join horsefeathers teams with no other stars. The Bulls still have 0 stars and really 0 potential stars IMO. Maybe Dunn. Well you'd hopefully be able to be selling two recent top 5 picks. Plus, money. Plus additional cap space to bring in another vet star at the same time.

So next years FA class is kinda crappy looking, except for Cousins who I can't see the bulls signing, but they could have a ton of space, especially if they dump Lopez (and why wouldn't they). 2019 is a much better class. Two year rebuilding plan?

So 9 draft spots, 1 year of Lavine (career Per 13.4) and Dunn (8.1 Per and blistering .432 TS% as a rookie- worse than Jerian Grants rookie numbers) I'm not a horsefeathering Bulls fan anymore.

I know there's been quite a few changes to the CBA in the past few years, but historically speaking, I don't think tank+draft is measurably more effective than other methods of building a championship team. And you seem to think it is. I get your points about timing and stuff, but I think our operating the relative merits of the two options to build.

Inevitably this usually leads to a Catch 22. Almost always part of the argument to blow it up is the FOs inability to show they can build around Butler. Yet, blowing it up hands them the keys to do whatever, with a built in rebuild expectation. I've watched so little basketball since 2012 I'm not sure I can even call myself a casual fan. So I can't say I have a passionate position on the matter, but I generally trust the opinions that say Butler is good enough to build a top team around.

Also, I guess alignment/scheme is really all that matters. Willie Young is listed as a LB and lines up on the outside, but often with his hand in the dirt. Probably drops into coverage less than the other guys listed as LB. Maybe RRH is whatever that position is? Leonard Floyd plays a similar role but standing up mostly. :dontknow:
